This was basically an opportunity to climb the 275 stairs to the top of the tower and an opportunity to take in the views ! I think a huge opportunity has been missed here and that a member of staff should accompany the group up the tower and relate some information and stories about the Tower and the Minster. There was a member of staff at the top but she did not engage with the group at all. Having recently done the Tower at Chester Cathedral where we were given a tour and information for the same price we were disappointed. Having said that the view from the top was excellent!

I found this climb pretty tough-going - I know I’m not particularly fit, but I have done other climbs with no problems. The main issue is that it’s a fairly relentless 275 spiral steps (there’s a little bit of flat around 100) and because you’re in a large group, you have to keep going or you’re holding everyone up. There’s nowhere to stop and catch your breath. It is just the tower (Chester, for example, takes you around a variety of places at different levels), and an extra £6 on top of an already hefty admission price is quite expensive. The views were ok, but the wire cage spoiled it - I think I prefer the views from Clifford’s Tower.

York Minster is very beautiful (5 stars) but if you are a city person, I doubt you will appreciate the Tower climb. I am a city person. I would rather look at the view from the Shard than from York Minster tower.

when you are at the top, it is all fenced up and you are in a fenced cage with only a small window looking out.

I sprained my ankle climbing the tower because of the spiral staircase. I am young (38) and I exercise regularly but I have a weak ankle. I didn't even notice that I sprained my ankle until I saw my swollen ankle. I was very careful when climbing the stairs, I guess my ankle couldn't take the twist.

Had a lovely visit to York Minster overall and couldn't visit without the climb!
We went on a Sunday during a girl's weekend away so was limited time, naturally because of services throughout the day.

To be honest, the climb was quite tough (I'm a slightly active, 32 year old) due to the narrow spiral staircases. If you want to go at your own pace then I highly suggest staying toward the back of the climb group. We did this and was then able to pause to catch our breath now and again. The 275 stairs are split in the middle where you have another stunning view and photo opportunities but get to spend longer there on the way back.

Some people weren't happy with the view from the top as it is caged (I'm guessing for safety resasons) but you can still get some good photos by using the viewing holes!

Would definitely reccommend the extra £6 to complete the climb!

Well worth the climb to see the wonderful views of York. Some other reviews said it was tough going with no break...if you have difficulty climb just stay at the back and make sure you're the last to go up (they do close the door behind the last person) then you can climb at your own pace and not feel like your holding others up. Yes their is a cage on the roof but that is for you're safety and there are lots of openings so you can take pictures. Well worth the £6 and it all goes to the restoration of this wonderful Minster.

After a very long climb to the top it was well worth it for the views of York and to see parts of the Minster you wouldn't normally get to see.
Well worth the time and money.

Thank you Ali Hedley and Alan Bridges from Southampton.

A tour up the Minster Tower takes in the bell ringing chamber and clock room via 2 tight spiral stone cases. It was very interesting and the guides added a lot of local knowledge. Ending up on the roof looking out over the city and Humber was the highlight, even in the rain and wind we had that day. Highly recommended for the cost.

I had lived in York for 4 years and always wanted to climb up the tower to see the views. Within the last 2 weeks of moving I finally done it and it was worth the wait. It can be pretty tiring as there are a lot of steps and some can be a little steeper than others so be sure you can climb them just as a health precaution. The views itself are amazing of the whole city and a fantastic experience.
