We visit the Imaginarium every year and always spend hundreds of pounds in there, and in their sister shop next door. We went September 2020 and likewise wanted to buy various items, totalling over £200. When we got to the till we were told we could not pay by cash, which is pretty much all we had on us. Obvious excuse for card payments was the Covid crisis, but not a valid reason.

Supermarkets are taking hundreds of cash payments all day long, it wouldn’t hurt this tiny shop to take cash a few times a day, especially as an independent which can make its own rules us at the click of a finger. They are happy to handle other things I have handled including their merchandise off the shelves which scores of people would have touched all day long. And I’m expected to touch their card machine which hundreds of people would have touched, and I’m expected to touch their products which they had spent ages wrapping and which at least two of their people had handled.

We did buy stuff and we did spend over £200 but I had to go back to the hotel and mess about transferring money about to be able to use a card. Covid is no excuse for these little shops insisting on card payment only, staff can wear disposable gloves and hand-sanitise if they’re worried, just like customers have to continually hand-sanitise.

I run a small business, and it would definitely be easier and cheaper if I refused cash, somebody has to walk to and deposit it in the bank once a week. But we do it for our customers, and the Imaginarium could have easily and should have taken my cash.

Anybody who is inconvenience by shops using Covid as an excuse not to take cash should leave similar reviews.

I quickly popped in here last December on a Christmas shopping trip to York. There were lots of quirky gifts available. I didn't buy anything- either too odd or too expensive I'm afraid! I'd still recommend a visit though.

If you like going into shops that are just a bit different, then this should be way up on your list.

The place is just amazing. Its modest in size by way of floor area but does it have some truly amazing things for sale from a few pounds to a few hundred pounds.

If you are fortunate to meet Steph, that just adds another dimension. Steph was just so upbeat and an integral part of this place. She knew the story, enthused about the place and fitted in like a glove.

Incidentally, next door is the Sister shop that sells soaps (not like any ordinary soaps) and other truly delightful products. Well worth a visit at the same time

I'd heard about this shop through friends of friends and was desperate to visit. Its a wonderful quirky shop with lots of interesting pieces. Purchased an altered art photo print, very pleased and look forward to returning

It is too unique to be a mere shop so I shall not describe any "stock". It is an experience - an exhibition in itself, of the beautiful, the ridiculous, the enchanting. A real escape from the mostly repetitive mediocrity of the High Street - any High Street. What do you buy the one with everything or nothing? The fussy, the frivolous, the dreamer, the child in us all. We hurry the four hours to York a few times a year and this is usually the first stop for us. It genuinely changes daily, restaged again so that tomorrow you see something new. The customer care is of another age, second to none and the browser is always welcomed. The Imaginarium's owners are as convivial and delightful as their remarkable shop. They own the little pink number next door as well - for afters. Alice has truly found Hogwarts. Poe comes to Downton...

On a trip to York I had heard great things about this shop and it was worth seeking out. Just in time for Christmas- there were tonnes of beautiful decorations and gift ideas.

The shop smells amazing and I had to buy a True Grace reed diffuser.

The staff were helpful, friendly and in good spirits.

So I’m about ready to up sticks and move up to York to work here. Seriously, this is the greatest shop I’ve ever been in - it’s like a magical enchanted wonderland run by beautiful fairies and pixies. I’ve bought so much stuff and will return for the cat that has eyes that light up and gets recharged when you fiddle with its bum.

Absolutely loved this unique shop - we ending up buying a little candle carousel but wanted to buy so much more! I’d definitely recommend this to any tourists in the city looking for something a bit different and unique! Don’t think they have a website as we’ve just tried to look to order something else so grab it all while you’re there! Well definitely be back!

This is unique, a one off and has to be visited when in York.
The staff are fantastic and the products sold are quirky and I have never seen the products like theirs sold anywhere else. The fittings in the shop are amazing, the mermaid and owl being two to mention but look around and you'll be amazed. At present the Christmas shop at the back of the premises is open again selling quality Christmas items unique to here. If you don't go anywhere else in York go here
