- johnhouston2Knaresborough, United Kingdom5,381 contributionsAlways good for a decent pint. When meeting up with mates for a couple of nights in York, this bar on the station was the perfect gathering point. It is well-known for its extensive range of ales and I also like the design of the place with its large, central bar. We received very good service and the ales were all spot on.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 9, 2024
- TwineyboyUpminster, United Kingdom183 contributionsBeer heaven on York StationA total beer heaven. A dozen or more top notch Real Ales with craft beers and ciders to boot. Located in an old tea room on the platform with street entrance too.Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 20, 2024
- Terry and LisaYork, United Kingdom41 contributionsA very enjoyable and well appointed station tap with excellent range of ales and efficient friendly crew.I originally extolled this bar in 2020 but I found today July 2024 on looking on trip advisor I failed to post it! Catching up now. It provides a great bolt hole meeting place and also provides the best pies around.I am not regular pie eater but here is exceptional plus the choice of beer etc. Visit when you can.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten July 2, 2024

Visited this pub today to meet some friends. Walked in to a relatively quiet pub, got told when I approached the empty bar area to go and sit with the people I'd arranged to meet. They both had already ordered drinks and were half way through them so I was keen to get a drink. I asked about how to get a drink and was told someone would come over. I then waited and waited and waited. I watched at least 4 other couples/groups come into the pub, be seated, have their details taken and drinks ordered and served whilst I was still waiting. I then, after some considerable time, went to the empty bar and enquired as to how to order a drink as was concerned I was missing something. I was then told someone would be over to take my order. I then waited again and watched other people arrive and be served before me. When finally I did get served there was no apology for the wait, in fact if anything the service was rather abrupt. Not a pleasant experience at all. If customers are going to continue to be served this way it would be a good idea for the staff to acknowledge who comes in when and serve appropriately.

Came in with pregnant friend for a drink (non-alcoholic for her) but tried to use the bathroom first - well that was a mistake. A patronising security guard (clearly with small man syndrome) rudely told us to use the train station toilets instead? Never in my life have I felt such hostility on walking into a pub. Although we didn’t get chance to stay, I can say that there was a prominent stench of stale vomit. Not a great experience unfortunately :(

Arrived after our journey and headed as usual straight to Tap for a sharpener, have to be honest didn’t look at prices on beer board as we’ve been so many times and everything has always been good.
We honestly fell off our stools when our two pints of Neck Oil arrived which was described as a session beer ,we offered a £10 note and were told £12.60 …. HONESTLY YOU’VE GOT TO BE JOKING £6.30 a pint for a session ale..
Sorry but you’ve just lost all my faith in the Tap to charge that price… if it wholesales and they need to sell it at that price then they shouldn’t stock it… it was a golden light beer and was nice but not at £6.30 it’s criminal

My husband and I called here on Friday 9th June after a great day at York races.
Lovely bar and friendly staff. The problem was the arrogant and very rude doorman on the platform entrance who appeared to have "little man syndrome"!!!
Not a very inviting person as we watched his attitude towards many people trying to call for a drink....many who walked away!

We always pop in for a real ale whenever we're waiting for the train home but the Tap has certainly lost its appeal of late.
We visited York in March and 2 choices of real ale's had run out and the staff hadn't replaced the barrel, the staff were rude, unfriendly and aggressive in manner, especially the security staff who were throwing their weight around and scowling at people.
I didn't write a review as I thought fair do's anywhere can have an off day, but last Saturday was exactly the same. All I can say is if you don't like working with the general public then don't, there are plenty of jobs out there and as for security staff, what a set of nasty aggressive animals.

Located in York Railway Station is a great real ale bar called York Tap ,a wonderfully drinking establishment I always make a beeline to whenever I am in York.
Housed in a former tearoom that dates from the early 20th century, its a Grade II listed building actually, the bar looks great, pubby decor and furnishings, faux skylights ,an island style serving bar dominates the main room and there's plenty of seating options spread throughout this bar both inside and outside on the railway platform.
My twin brother Stephen and I were here on a Tuesday evening, greeted warmly by a very pleasant member of the staff, we had a study of their real ale's and we both opted to have Kirkstall Brewery pale ale, these were served in excellent condition, we just kicked back, chilled out and took in the great bar we were in.
My pale ale was really good, a crisp, well balanced pale ale with a big hit of hops, hints of toffee and a delicious aroma, on a hot evening a totally refreshing brew, it was just so good being in such a lovely bar enjoying a quality brew and to be honest being back in York again after all the recent travel restrictions.
We both really enjoyed our pale ale's in here before we moved on and as on every other visit to York Tap we had a very positive experience.
York Tap is easy to locate in York Railway Station.
Opening hours are;
Monday to Saturday, 11am till 11pm.
Sunday, 11am till 10pm.
A wonderful bar in a fantastic location, most definitely well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Often noisy, more like a New York bar really.
Some magnificent brews and some doomed by tasting of grapefruit rather than hops.
Always ask for a sample nip and then you will get the good advice too. Best value are the Tap's own beers, otherwise expect some big prices, though it can be worth it. A fine mid victorian decor with some lovely stained glass windows. A place to remember and watch the trains go by.

What a dreadful place. Hot and humid inside, the slowest service, no mixers on draft available. Overpriced. What I really took exception to was the gents toilets, two urinals overflowing with wee, the single cubicle taped up and out of order. So after visiting the unclean disabled toilet, which had no toilet roll and no hand towels available we left. All the tables covered in empty glasses and only seemed to be two staff working. Probably only survives due to people wanting a quick drink before their train. Awful.

In these challenging times it is no wonder that the York Tap chooses to limit what is available on tap. Keeping quality beer does matter and reputations are built this way for the discerning real ale community. Still a great variety and choice available so don’t think the standards are dropping. Still a fine venue for any traveler wether train bound or otherwise. Dark beers were great. Thank you and keep safe.

Nice to sit on the benches outside the pub next to platforms drink prices bit hit and miss. Two drinks one price then finished them bought exactly the same different price this happened twice . Plenty to watch when trains are running still open even though during the train strike no trains were running. Good Central meeting point get to station by bus, train or car.
