- Christine BSkipton, United Kingdom49 contributionsThe selfish folk amongst usOne woman stood up dancing but the person behind was unable to see. Nobody else was, they were all happy to sit and watch the show. She didn't care, we tried to get the security but either they didn't see us or couldn't be bothered. I don't think i will be back. We spoke to a security guard after and he said this complaint was a regular thing. Something should be done to stop it. She spoilt the experience for some but didn't care at all.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 29, 2024
- SteveS1970Coventry, United Kingdom8,942 contributionsABC concertWe came here for the ABC concert and sent that this was a great venue. The queues for the bars and toilets get a bit long at the interval but this is a problem in all of this type of building. Sound was excellent but felt it was strange that people, other than a few, didn’t get up to dance. This was an 80’s pop band, although now with a full orchestra, but dancing was always the intention to it. I had the same experience when I saw Holly Johnson in Birmingham which I thought was odd then. Nothing to do with the venue, really close to where we stayed and a very secure car park across the road. Would definitely come again.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 30, 2024
- maplesteveBeverley, United Kingdom249 contributionsRick Wakeman and his "carers"!Rick Wakeman was excellent. An initial set of selected "YES" songs, shorter than the subsequent one hour long full rendition of "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" was well presented by excellent musicians and vocalists extending the NINE stage members, including Rick's son, also on keyboards. THe venue is however somewhat dated, with carpeting in need of replacement and seating in need of a full overhaul. Quite who set out the ergonomics of the seating with little or no legroom should look at themselves. For what was an "older" audience in the main, you need more room in your latter years and to sit for two hours folded up in an uncomfotable position. Please rectify!Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 24, 2024
- Karen A10 contributionsFabulous nightWe went to see the Rock Orchestra Tuesday 27th Feb. Fabulous show and our daughter bought us VIP tickets for our Xmas present . The reception staff were great showed us round and we had access to the bar; well looked after by the lady behind the bar that night so sorry I didn’t get her name. I think it was Angela that showed us to our seats she was fab and I even got an escort to the loo and felt very looked after! I guess the only downer was the twerp at the end of the show who literally 3 seconds after I emerged from the loo to find my hubby waiting .. approached and said “ you waiting for anyone?” We said no so he very officiously said well we’re closed you need to leave. I have York based local business in hospitality I wouldn’t employ someone like that .. it put a black splodge on an other wise great experience. Won’t stop us going to the Barbican again but I won’t be meekly putting up with that next time. Let’s not let that spoil a well deserved review.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 28, 2024
- Dean W3 contributionsPoor facilitiesThought we would make an evening of it. Looked online and thought the restaurant looked okay. However, and if your not a local watch out for checking the barbican york restaurant which I now realise isn't york barbican ,my fault. York barbican is well presented with nice staff, but crisps and bags of sweets is their lot, along with a few cheap chairs and no tables. Let in late whilst some poor people were standing waiting in the rain. Show was excellent though the seats were small. They need to look toward better pre-show facilities, like many other venues around...Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 19, 2024
- ceriEnglandKeighley, United Kingdom27 contributionsOutstanding help for people with a disabilityWe went to see Riverdance, and the show was amazing. However, my review is to compliment staff who helped in the event of a last minute disability which could have ruined our day. I am a carer for my disabled husband and could have helped him, so did not book disabled seats. However 2 days before I sustained a fractured patella and had to wear a full leg brace. When we arrived (my Husband with a walking frame and me on crutches) help was immediately sent for. They relocated our seats to the front row, stored our equipment and fetched drinks to us. In fact, they were amazing. They have an ethos of being accessible, however they were unaware of our problems until we arrived and this help was unsolicited and unexpected. Truly outstanding care and attention, thank you!Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 24, 2024
- FinediningAmberSalisbury, United Kingdom195 contributionsExcellent VenueWe visited the Barbican last Monday evening to see the comedian, John Bishop, and both the show and the venue were excellent! We were impressed by how well organised and seamless everything was from the outset despite it being extremely busy (with a vast amount of people). It was hectic but the staff were incredibly efficient. Some people seemed irritated by the security checks - expect to get your bags checked etc. Personally I am pleased they do this given the potential for harm. It doesn't take long but probably best to allow a few extra minutes if you are going. Well worth getting the upgrade to the VIP lounge area because you are guaranteed to be served quicker when getting your refreshments in the intermission. Well done to the lady who tended the bar (on her own) and managed to serve everyone so quickly and efficiently and kept smiling throughout! Overall, a wonderful evening at a wonderful venue.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 9, 2024

Venue itself is lovely, great acoustics and plenty staff to assist. Bar was astronomical however and my biggest beef was having to buy three tickets when we only needed two. There was no option on the booking to allow only two tix (we had the last row of three seats). I only found that out on arrival at the gig. We went to see the ‘Illegal Eagles’ last Sunday. The band was fab. We had waited 2 years due to lockdown for a birthday weekend in York. This was our last night, 10 mins in all was going well; Then, to my horror, 4 drunk and rowdy people plonked themselves down in front of us and the 2 women continued to talk disturbing all around. The people seated in front of them asked staff if they could move as they were kicking their seat! I told them to shut up and stop being so selfish and so did another lady near us.
Staff gave then 2 warnings within 10 minutes then removed them from the venue. I was most impressed at the speed they dealt with these ignorant selfish inconsiderate morons. I have seen an increase in these narcissistic morons who have no consideration for others. Only months earlier we had attended the NEC in Birmingham where another ignorant grunt munched his way very loudly through a carrier bag of snacks. We complained and staff did nothing. Venues need to be more aware of the increase in this disgraceful behaviour and deal with it quickly.
Well done York Barbican!

Heather Small Concert. An amazing evening marred by lack of Security action and safety concerns.
The front row had a number of people with mobility issues. During the concern a number of people moved to the stage from rows further back. They were dancing in front of some who were obviously unable to stand, completely blocking their view. Security were informed and briefly tried to move people but they soon returned. People were blocking stairways and the route to the exit.
In my humble opinion it seems that there needs to be a review of safety and security for these events at this venue.
People should be able to enjoy themselves, but not at the expense of others, particularly the more vulnerable.

My daughter (11) and I watched the Champions Of Magic show here last night, stalls row C, great show and great view of the stage!
All rows are teered so no issues if you have a big head directly in front of you!
Usual issues for us and others around us with groups of drunks behind talking throughout the performance (they’ve paid £50 each?!) but this didn’t spoil or enjoyment.
No iPads/tablets allowed inside but smart phones with large screens are .. not sure why?
We’ll be back 😀

A one-star review is generous as getting into the venue itself is chaotic. We were left out in the cold, rain and wind last night for over 15 minutes in a queue waiting for security checks; An umbrella would have been helpful, except you are not to take one into the venue!. Also someone else in the queue was made to pour away the water from a bottle as this was not allowed in. We should have known this as it is printed on the reverse side of the tickets (website FAQ), except the tickets are now electronic (TicketMaster), and we don't have a 'back' to look at.
Once you had passed all the security checks and allowed in (now cold and wet), I then had to queue for an additional 15 min at the box office to pay for the Q-carpark, which we were told to do the car park attendant.
We got to our seats 1 minute to spare at 7:29 pm, but as it was still complete chaos outside and at the box office, the performance started 15 minimises late. Others were also admitted entry after it had started.
At best, the venue was only 2/3 full, so goodness knows what it would have been like if it was packed. There was a lack of staff, and I have never seen such a slow box office.

I attended this venue for the first time last night and was screened by an external security company and had my bag searched. I have no issues with that process but in exceptionally hot weather I was carrying a sealed bottle of water for obvious reasons. This was removed from me. To quote Security “its the barbicans policy to allow no drinks to be brought inside”. This is the first I was aware of your policy as the ticket was bought using Ticket master and apparently this “rule” is printed on the reverse side of the tickets (website FAQ) Difficult to read the back of an electronic (Ticket Master), they dont have a back.
Inside the venue it was stifling hot and I immediately began to overheat. There was a large queue at the bar and I could not see the bar for people so I gave up trying to ask for water went and found my seat. If the show had not been about to start I would have waited to try and obtain a drink.
I had to wait until half time to go and find a drink. Again the bar had a large queue but I noticed the water dispenser on the end of the bar so at least was able to get a drink. No helpful notice on this to say help yourself to water.
Why a sealed bottle of water had to be removed from me and several other people is quite disgraceful in very hot weather.
I also note the temperature in the concert area was so hot and almost unbearable, people were fanning themselves to try and cool down. After the interval the cool air could be felt circulating almost as if it had been purposely switched off at the start of the show so people would clamour for a drink at the bar during the interval??
This is a shameful rule of yours, so much so I will not return to any other event.

We were emailed with tickets and advised that we would not be admitted without
a) Proof of a lateral flow test
b) Proof of being double jabbed
c) Proof of having had and recovered from Covid
On arrival there were NO CHECKS at all re any of the above. Hardly anyone was wearing a mask. To cap it all, one pint of beer £6.10 !!! I run one of the biggest sports and social clubs in the county and know that this is just EXTORTION!! Bar is daylight robbery! This venue should consider its customers with respect, not rob them when they offer support. Disgraceful!
I have contacted The Barbican twice via their own portal and they havent even had the decency to respond. SHAME ON YOU!

Hi Andriodf,
Thanks for leaving a review for York Barbican.
Our pre-show communications to guests are to encourage customers to wear a face covering, not to attend the venue if they have any Coronavirus symptoms and to provide proof of immunity or to take a test before coming to the venue, none of which are a term and condition of entry to the venue at this moment in time, in line with government requirements.
If any local or government requirements change in relation to the above we will of course alter our approach to comply with all legislation.
Our prices are set by ASM Global, who manages the venue, and aim to keep the prices competitive with other comparable venues across the country. In addition, we only sell premium products on our bars to reflect this.
We hope you enjoyed the show and that we see you again at the venue in the near future.

We went to see Tony Blackburn's Sound of the Sixties Show on 22nd March 2023.
The show, and Tony, were great but the venue left a lot to be desired.
The sound quality was terrible - with everything being blasted out at great volume from two large speakers hung on either side of the stage. We had chosen seats on the far right of the auditorium so unfortunately were close to the right hand speaker but a long way from the left hand speaker. This resulted in an "out of phase" stereo effect due to the long unequal distances to the speakers.
I dread to think what the soune quality would be like for a concert band or classical music.
The seats were quite uncomfortable with little knee room once the person in front sat down and tipped their seat back.
The auditorium was very slow to empty as almost all of the front stalls have to exit down narrow aisles and then just two side doors at the front.

Great concert, bar service shambolic and very very expensive.
The bar area was very very busy as we were all there to see our friend sing therefore most of the people knew each other and obviously we had not been able to meet up recently so everyone was up for a good time.
I was served the wrong drinks twice ( I only ordered 6 drinks, how hard can it be?)
The bill was over &52!!!
I noticed that a reply to a previous post said they only sell premium drink brands, well I cannot confirm that our drinks were not premises brands. ( We are all around the 60 mark so we know our drink!!
I was starting to think I was in New York and not York!
The company who run the bar should have a long hard look at themselves and train the staff. They could have easily taken 3 times as much if they were organised!

We recently enjoyed a musical event at York Barbican.
One at which we decided to attend last minute to support the local music scene (York Guildhall Ensemble and Choir.)
Before we even got to see the act, we were angry and annoyed.
Why?
Well for a start the idiotic decision to not allow a water bottle into the venue (in case you’re carrying acid!!!) is just a non starter in common sense. What if. What if? What if it carried,…water!!
My main gripe was that York Council and this venue seem to have gone down the (increasingly popular route) of becoming a cashless venue.
Not, card preferred, but NO cash at all.
Well this is not acceptable to me.
Cash IS and has been for 000’s of years, legal tender.
I get paid in cash.
The child’s pocket money is cash (which they couldn’t even spend at the interval ice cream stall.)
As a customer, with money to spend, it should NOT become policy that I am discriminated against.
I didn’t buy anything because of this rule (on principle.)
I shall continue to bang the drum for this.

Went to see a concert here whilst in the city after paying the shameful additional fees for using a card, handling fee etc. Turned up 2 hours after doors supposedly opened to find huge crowds outside and chaos of which door people should enter. Phoenix nights style ‘Max and Paddy’ security guards patrolling outside and shouting in a threatening manor for everyone to empty their pockets. Get to the doors and am physically man handled by another one of these characters with a wand metal detector that I would describe as 15 times worse than airport security. Interestingly 6 people in front of us with rucksacks did not have the searched!
Once inside the bar was obscene with limited choice and £8 for a pint! £8!!!! Walked into the main area that the band were performing which is inside i.e. an enclosed space, here we had to endure people smoking and vaping! SMOKING & VAPING!!! Staff did not want to know and turned not so blind eyes to all of this.

Does York Barbican have a cloakroom for those attending the standing section of a gig?
Written March 12, 2024
Hello! I may have answered your question too late but I'm happy to help. There's a main cloakroom on the Stalls floor (Level -1). It's open from 90 minutes before an event and until 30 mins after the event on performance days.
I hope you found this helpful and I hope it helps future visitors as well.

Hi Jan, do you have any feedback on how the view was? We've just got balcony Row C seats 18 and 19 for a show and I'm a bit worried we are stuck behind the sound desk. The venue are being very 'wishy washy' on what they will tell me. Thanks
