For whatever reason, we had quite low expectations for this museum when visiting as part of the York pass (to be honest, we only came because it was included as an attraction and not because we would have otherwise sought it out). However, we were pleasantly surprised on all fronts. The small entrance hides away quite a sizable collection that it was very well laid out with a range of exhibitions both in video/audio and standard cases/placards. We had a leisurely pass through the rooms, not reading everything because of other time constraints, and still spent around 40 minutes there. If you have even a passing interest in war memorable or their specific exhibitions, it would be easy and enjoyable to spend much longer looking round, and given the low price of admission even without the York pass I would say it’s worth a visit.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review us. We're pleased that the museum exceeded initial expectations, and that you were pleasantly surprised by what you found! The size of the museum space itself, relative to the small entranceway and exterior, often surprises our visitors when they first come in.

We have visited this museum before but this time the visit was brought to life by the extensive knowledge of Luke of all things military (from Greek battles to modern day warfare) . He is a major asset to the museum floor with his clear explanations and ability to link evolving tactics from one battle to another. His knowledge extends much further than military history, discussing Corporal Jones and the merits of Dad’s Army, J R R Tolkien and Viking reenactment. It was a brilliant visit , thank you.

A pretty decent regimental museum telling the story of the local infantry and cavalry regiments. It has been substantially refurbished in the last few years and is now open plan and a good mix covering predecessors to the Royal Dragoon Guards and Yorkshire Regiment. There is a handy guide picking out some of the star items, or you can browse the cases. I reckon an hour unless you are a real enthusiast. Veterans and blue light get in with a reduced fees.

We visited this museum because it was on the York pass and weren’t necessarily expecting much.
The museum was very comprehensive giving the history of the two Yorkshire regiments
It felt modern.
I particularly liked the Captain Tom information at the end.
I would recommend it to people with York passes and those with an interest in army history

For starters, it's only a £5 entry fee - one of the cheapest in all of York! And the ticket can be re-used within a year.
Secondly, if you're a militaria fan/historian like me, this'll be your heaven. I actually visited the museum twice while holidaying in York. First visit I was there for a good three hours (my poor sister, who has no interest in the military just about fell asleep waiting for me!) and second visit another 90 minutes.
There is an absolute wealth of information to read and learn, lots of exhibits to admire. (I was particularly entranced by the Vickers and the 1917 German machine gun.) There is an excellent mix of factual information and personal stories of valour and courage. And if you're more of a multi-media type person, they even have a mix of movies that run constantly on a three screen display.
The little gift shop is lovely too. I bought a brilliant flask that looks like a bullet! Such a unique item. The gentleman at the till was lovely too, very welcoming and chatty. He too was very knowledgeable and when discovered I was a military fan was chatting away to me for a good while.
I would say this is my favourite military museum within the UK, and would highly recommend to those interested by military history.
It will be top of my list next time I return to York!

Thank you very much for your post and positive comments! It's great to hear that you enjoyed your repeat visits to us, and found the museum exhibits to be informative and insightful. I'm pleased you had the time to talk to one of our front of house team, who are predominantly local volunteers, and very enthusiastic about the museum and its collection. Thank you also for picking up a souvenir from the gift shop, and I hope it will be a fun momento of your visit!

Good experience if you are interested in the army. Really good price (£5 per adult) and ticket valid for a year, really impressed with that, museum is a lot smaller than I thought it was going to be but still a good experience and some interesting bits to look at/read. One way system due to Covid. Parking is available but very small/tight car park.

Visited here during a 3 day stay in York.
It's not very big but does contain quite a bit of information and exhibits so don't be fooled by the size.
Take your time to walk around and you will enjoy the experience.
Staff were very friendly and welcoming.
The entrance fee is low compared to some other places so consider donating if you have any spare change.

Thank you very much for taking the time to post on our page. We're glad you enjoyed your look around! We certainly manage to fit a lot of information into a comparatively small space. The real benefit comes from taking the time to look at the objects, and read and listen to the stories behind them.

My daughter and I have visited York on a number of occasions and visited here having exhausted the other options.
All credit to the museum, which, despite being small has a vast collection of exhibits.
I reserved judgement and we have it a go, but not really a great place to visit if you're a pacifist!
We spent about 20 minutes looking around. I don't think you could spend much more than 45 minutes here, even if you were an enthusiast.
I felt that the entrance fee was reasonable and reflected the size of the museum.

Thank you very much for reviewing us. We always aim to fit in as much as we can, despite the space limitations, and also without cramming in too much as to make it overwhelming! You are correct in the time taken to visit, as we find that something between 40 minutes - 1 hour is the average time, though sometimes it can take longer.

The last time we visited York, we found the museum closed (so it must have been on a Sunday last time). But on our recent visit to York, we decided to check again, and not being a Sunday, it was open.
It’s a good size, not massive, but equally not too small either. Google tells me we spent 45 minutes there, which from memory seems correct.
To conclude; a very well laid out and well presented museum, and more than worth the £5 admission fee.

A wonderful little regimental museum incorporating the history of five very famous regiments who can boast involvement in all of the major wars of the last four hundred years. There are some VCs and MCs to marvel at, an an interesting display about Titus Oates the polar explorer. Highly recommended.

Thank-you for reviewing us. We are pleased you enjoyed your visit to us. Not a lot of people know that Captain Oates has links to both our regiments. He joined the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons in 1900 and had previously served with the 3rd Battalion the West Yorkshire Regiment.

What facility do they have for research on an individual soldier who served in the East Yorkshire Regiment
Hi. You can contact the Collections and Research Manager at the museum by email the address is on the museum website [I can't post links via Trip Advisor] or give her a call 01904 461031. The museum has a research service and can advise you of what records and information they hold. They have many documents behind the scenes that can't all go on display, so there may be information in the archives that can help you.

Coming by car were is the closest car park to the museum without much of a walk
Hi
The closest car park to the museum is Castle Car Park, it is next to Clifford's Tower. It is a council run car park and they charge £2.60 per hour at the moment.
