York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful city of York for over 250 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime starring Berwick Kaler, the UK's longest-running Dame. Over the last ten years York Theatre Royal's work has expanded to include collaborations with the wider community and school groups both on and off stage. The theatre has seen an increase in the number of young people wanting to get involved and as a result they now have one of the largest youth theatre groups in the country with over 300 members. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children hosted at the National Railway Museum and then transferred to the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community. The theatre reopened Friday 22 April following a £6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century audience that will be sustainable and able to thrive into the future.

My Mum & I visited the cafe bar here for coffee & cake, mainly to see how it looked following the recent renovations. We were impressed. The cafe bar area has increased in size, expanding into the colonnades at the front, which have been enclosed with floor to ceiling glass. There is a nice range of sandwiches, cakes & main... More

What a lovely evening we had here on 2nd July, we saw 7 brides for 7 brothers by York Light, excellent production by a wonderful cast, it was hard to believe they were all amateurs. We had very comfortable seats at the back of the stalls, now the stalls have been tiered we had a really good view. We also... More

I meet a friend for lunch in the newly refurbished bistro at York Theatre Royal. I had often walked past and viewed the old external archways that are now enclosed with glass, making this an ideal and spectacular viewpoint for people-watching on a sunny day. The food offering was disappointing though - a very limited choice. However on the day... More

Although there were no shows I could see during my weekend in York (The Mystery Plays dominates the YTR programming) I did visit the now refurbished cafe and front of house area, and I am very impressed by what I saw. The cafe has become what it always aspired to be: a standalone business which effortlessly and beautifuly sits within... More

It is a pitty that this historical building has so many modern elements in front of it, it disturbes the charme of this building.

We love the Theatre Royal in York, especially its panto, and were looking forward to it finally re-opening after a multi-million pound refurbishment with an adaptation of one of our favourite books, Brideshead Revisited. The new stalls had a better slope on them to see the improved stage more effectively and the seats were high backed with plenty of leg... More

York Theatre Royal has reopened after a long-term closure to enable the reshaping of the inside, to create more comfortable seating, to produce a lighter, less cramped box office area and inevitably to reveal some archaeological remains. The entrance space is well designed and the bistro is open longer and has new additional table space in the old arched exterior... More

We found this production weak & amateurish, acting was dire in parts with some truly tragic attempts at foreign accents - the canadian one particularly cringe-worthy. This hasn't adapted well to the stage - the years are raced through so fast that affinity with any character is impossible. At the same time the 2 hour 40 performance is a drag.... More

After 14 months of £6 million refurbishment, the York Theatre Royal opened last night with a world premier performance of "Brideshead Revisited". The Theatre now appears to have more seating with a slope to the Stalls coming right up to the Dress Circle . The seats are very comfortable with high backs and plenty of leg room. The Stage is...
