York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful city of York for over 250 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime starring Berwick Kaler, the UK's longest-running Dame. Over the last ten years York Theatre Royal's work has expanded to include collaborations with the wider community and school groups both on and off stage. The theatre has seen an increase in the number of young people wanting to get involved and as a result they now have one of the largest youth theatre groups in the country with over 300 members. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children hosted at the National Railway Museum and then transferred to the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community. The theatre reopened Friday 22 April following a £6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century audience that will be sustainable and able to thrive into the future.

Th theatre is small so every seat good. We were off to the side on the floor (seats H1 and H2)' and had a great view. Could see the actors sweat. Quality performance and the few songs were sung very well. Wish this were in my home town.

Birthday treat for my husband, Theatre was lovely, seats were comfortable apart from not much leg room at the front row of the dress circle. Show was absolutely excellent we laughed and smiled the whole way through and the lady who played Mrs Hudson was the absolute star of the show, everybody else were fantastic as well though but she... My two great grandad daughters and I went to see the Hounds of the basket ills, the performance was great we laughed and cheered all the way through,it was a magic night out. We decided to eat in the bistro before the performance and was happy with the meal and the standard of service. Good night out, well worth the... More

Excellent night's entertainment at the Theatre Royal watching 'Sherlock Holmes - Hound of the Baskervilles' - went with my parents and 8 yr old son we all loved it - entertaining, gripping and musical - with enough tension and genuine mystery to keep us guessing until the end! Fantastic cast who each brought something different and brilliant to a great... More

The Theatre Royal has recently undergone a transformation. The box office, cafe area, toilets and general front of house are much more welcoming. The auditorium has also been reconfigured to give a much better viewing experience for the audience. A friend and I also ate in the restaurant recently and the food was good and well cooked and served. We... More

This is my first visit to the York Theatre Royal since the refurbishment and the update is really good. The new café under the arches is lovely and there are plenty of gluten-free options too. The main difference in the auditorium is in the stalls. There are far fewer seats now as the whole of the stalls seating is banked... More

I'm 6'3" and didn't have a problem with legroom in the dress seats. The play was good, funny. Difficult to understand at times. 2 hour halves with a 20min intermission. The box office and Cafe staff are super nice. Not a bad option at all when the shops close!

What a great show, thoroughly enjoyed every moment. It has something for everyone, and the very busy cast carried off superbly. Highly recommend. It was our first visit since the refurbishment and we had no issues with leg room, though we are very average in height. Don't miss it

This used to vie with the Bristol Old Vic as the oldest theatre in the country. A beautiful 300 year old Georgian building. It has just had 6 millions spent on it. Thankfully the look of the auditorium and the structure has not changed too much, just the front of house that now looks like a school dining room and... More

This was our first trip to the York Theatre Royal since it has been refurbished and it was a very disappointing trip. Thie first thing is if you're over 6ft do not expect to be able to set comfortably in the seats. I am nearly 6'2" and used to being fairly cramped but this was a whole new level of... More
