York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful city of York for over 250 years and is one of the country's leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime starring Berwick Kaler, the UK's longest-running Dame. Over the last ten years York Theatre Royal's work has expanded to include collaborations with the wider community and school groups both on and off stage. The theatre has seen an increase in the number of young people wanting to get involved and as a result they now have one of the largest youth theatre groups in the country with over 300 members. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children hosted at the National Railway Museum and then transferred to the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community. The theatre reopened Friday 22 April following a £6million redevelopment, with a new roof, an extended and re-modelled front of house area, a refurbished and redecorated main auditorium and with major improvements to access and environmental impact. York Theatre Royal is now a building fit for a 21st century audience that will be sustainable and able to thrive into the future.

My husband and I were visiting in York for a stay of one week in mid-August. Our trip had been planned for about six months so I had lots of time to research things to do and see before our arrival. I was thrilled when I saw that the Royal York Theater was just around the block from our lovely... More

Called in for snack lunch. Plenty of tables and good menu for lunchtime. Evening pre theatre catering looked good too. Sandwiches a bit doorstep but OK for our requirement. Clean, airy surroundings and good value. Orders taken at counter and quickly brought to the table. Friendly service.

Went to see "When We Were Married" on Saturday 17 Sept 2016. I will never book the front row of the Upper Circle again. I am 5ft 2in and found the leg room really cramped. My companions are taller and were in considerable discomfort which really spoilt our enjoyment of the play. I see from other reviews that the front... More

While visiting we attended a classic, comedy by Priestly "When We Were Married". The group performing were pros and the play, while perhaps dated, held up in terms of comedy and insights about the societal values portrayed in that time period. The Theatre itself is very comfortable and seems like the view lines are great in every seat. We were... More

Sat in the stalls, all seats had a great view and it felt much more atmospheric than before. Seats very comfortable though still not a lot of leg room. Bar area and cafe excellent and stayed open after the show which was lovely as we had a wait for our bus. Jugs of water available and well done for showcasing... More

Went to York Theatre Royal in Sat 29 Aug 2016 to see Holmes & Hound of the Baskervilles. It was the last night so unfortunately my thoughts will be of little help now. The cast were very versatile and individually impressive, but the script let them down; the jokes being largely unfunny and the slapstick too contrived. One could clearly... More

Been a wait but worth it. New configuration of seats works well..ladies loos miles better. Lovely seating areas for drinks & food including some outside. Nearest guaranteed parking at Marygate..you can pay there by card. 5 min walk. We saw Sherlock Holmes. .hilarious. Talented multi disciplinary actors. Strong team behind the scenes.

Th theatre is small so every seat good. We were off to the side on the floor (seats H1 and H2)' and had a great view. Could see the actors sweat. Quality performance and the few songs were sung very well. Wish this were in my home town.

Birthday treat for my husband, Theatre was lovely, seats were comfortable apart from not much leg room at the front row of the dress circle. Show was absolutely excellent we laughed and smiled the whole way through and the lady who played Mrs Hudson was the absolute star of the show, everybody else were fantastic as well though but she...
