Exhibition Square is just opposite Bootham Bar and is the start point for Hop on Hop off bus tours, operated by City Sightseeing. The square is bounded by King's Manor to the south, now home to York University's archaeological unit. York Art Gallery occupies the western part of the square with a statue of local artist William Etty and some fountains just infront.

If you want a spot to watch the tourists, locals, buses etc this busy small square just outside the walls is for you. Otherwise it is probably just the way to the art gallery, gardens or toilets. Handy spot to agree to meet. Perhaps not a destination in itself though.

After the great success of the art and industrial exhibition held in this area in 1866 it was decided to plough the profits into turning this area of York into one of the most beautiful square's in York.
After having walked the full length of the famous Roman Walls ,we descended down from Bootham Bar were we admired the wonderful architecture here such as the gatehouse,Roman Walls,Kings Manor,York Art Gallery and the stunning De Greys Rooms Building, there a great statue here in honour of William Etty which is cool.
After admiring the architecture we then hit some of the great pubs here such as The Bootham Tavern,The White Horse Pub,The Lamb & Lion Pub,The Hole In The Wall Pub ,The Exhibition Pub were we had a great time,it's most definitely a square I highly recommend you check out if your planning a trip to York.

Exhibition Square is in my opinion quite a good area to visit if your planning a trip to York.
The square was created in 1866 when York hosted the city's first fine art and industrial exhibition, temporary building where erected in the grounds of Bootham Hospital, the exhibition halls were timber and glass buildings and the exhibition was a huge success and so it was agreed to plough the profits into some permanent structures devoted to art and industry and this is how Exhibition Square developed from that day onwards .
I love the varied architecture here from the beautiful Kings Manor, the stunning De Grey Rooms ,the very popular York Art Gallery complete with its statue to William Etty which is a great statue and water feature and the ancient and stunning Bootham Bar, as a real ale fan there's also great pubs all around here such The White Horse Pub,The Bootham Tavern, The Hole In The Wall Pub ,The Lamb & Lion Pub and The Eagle And Child Pub .
A really interesting square to visit ,most definitely well worth checking out if your planning a trip to York.

This is a nice square in the front of the York Art Gallery and with the statue of William Etty out front.

Over the road are some access points inside the City walls and wall related information.

There are much better and more important attractions in my humble opinion than this in the relatively tight confines of York city centre - I wouldn't actively seek this out if if I was you. We just happened upon it !!

It is however where you can find the York art gallery. Also one of the entrances through the town walls into 'ancient'. York. A handy place to meet friends as seats to sit on while waiting, and on lots of bus routes.

The water feature is really the only point of interest in this square but it was incredible how much difference a bit of sunshine made to the feel of the place when we visited in August

There's a modest water feature and a busy road for company in this square.

Nothing wrong with it but there's nicer areas of York to head for.

We didn't linger to be fair, it was a bitterly cold wind blowing on Christmas Eve and we were heading to the minster for a service but i did note the fountains were rather attractive, the photo opportunity was lost by the (closed( queueing baracades for winter wonderland
