About
No visit to York is complete without a stroll along part of the 2 miles of historic walls that have protected the city for nearly 2000 years. The walls are completely free to walk, however bespoke guided tours can be booked with your own personal tour guide, meeting you at a time and place to suit you, and showing you the extensive hidden history to be found along the walls.

- joanp232Phoenix, Arizona101 contributionsNot quite the top of the wall. The walls and ruins are a fascinating and worthwhile experience. The steps up to the top of the wall are steep and it is high for people who are afraid of heights. It is a special experience. I really would have appreciated more signage. Without it I had no idea what I was looking at or which time period it is from.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 28, 2024
- meopi76Dolgellau, United Kingdom157 contributionsEnjoyableA pleasant, easy walk with good city views. It was mostly paved and therefore safe to manoeuvre with just a few steps to get up and down. The wall briefly ceases to exist in a few places and I sometimes had to search for the next stage.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten March 12, 2024
- BraindamagedbaronNewark-on-Trent, United Kingdom1,795 contributionsTaking The High GroundWe had a day out in York and after a hearty breakfast at The Postern Gate we strolled around the walls of the city taking in the glorious views. It's a lovely walk and we thoroughly enjoyed the day. There's ample opportunity to leave the walls, break away, have a look at the locality and then return to the high point and carry on your merry way. There is history ay every turn and plenty of spots to read up about the points of interest you'll pass as you enjoy your journey around the walls. A fascinating stroll that you really must do if you ever visit the gorgeous city.Visited April 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 23, 2024
- kevkelly6Tamworth, United Kingdom26 contributionsWalls WalkNice walk around the walls. We started at the Bootham bar which I'd recommend as you end up as the very picturesque section at the end. Very easy walk, some steps at the sections. Lot of stuff I read said it took about 2 hours but don't think we were walking much longer than an 1/1.5 hours. Fairly steady walkers (both 41). I'd say earlier you go the better as I'd imagine it gets pretty busy. We went around 9am and as the morning went on it started getting busier.Visited March 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 4, 2024
- FyingKiwiChristchurch, New Zealand1,131 contributionsMust WalkOne cannot visit York and not walk on its city walls either part way or for the full existent circuit. Provides an opportunity to visit many other places of attraction along the way as well as treating you to some terrific scenery. Able to be accessed from many parts of the walls circumference.Visited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 26, 2024
- TickleishWellington, New Zealand373 contributionsIt’s a must do!We walked the entire walls over 2 days (stopping off at other places if interested) but could be done in 1, gentle stroll. It’s an amazing walk, full of history and views of the city. Our mind went back I. Time and tried to imagine what it was like… But then you come across Viking and roman artefacts, a tower that’s now a museum. Just mind blowing!!Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 13, 2024
- Man1cmomWest Midlands, United Kingdom744 contributionsA must see and do in YorkThe history of these walls is impressive and amazing. They run the perimeter of the city. We walked the entire walls in a day, getting on and off to see the different sites on the way. Some of the paths are narrow. Some of the stores are steep. Beautiful views from most of the walls, not so much when you get to the housing estate at the back, but how fab to look out of your window and have these on your garden gate!! We bumped into a walking tour whixh we listed to at the stop we were at, even better if you want the whole experience. A must see and do whilst in York for all ages.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 19, 2024
- 287LogesSydney, Australia570 contributionsHistorical walkWalked around the walls solo. Took about 1.5 to 2 hours. There is a section that is not accessible due to roadworks near the railway station at Queen St so could not do full circuit. Very interesting with good views from the walls and the different entrances like Mickelgate Bar, Bootham Bar, Monk Bar . Nice view of York Minster too. Not too busy.Visited June 2024Traveled soloWritten July 5, 2024
- KMBO21Eastleigh, United Kingdom74 contributionsEasy self guided walkCompleted the entire length of the walls took between 1.5-2hrs walking at a good pace. We used a free map found near the portcullis along the way to guide us. In parts nearer the centre it got busier, but generally it was quite quiet. You can see some great views of York from the walls and enjoyable walk.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 10, 2024
- JonnyjubbRayleigh, United Kingdom247 contributionsEnjoyable WalkA thoroughly enjoyable walk round the city of York. Quite a few steps where the gaps in the walls are, as well as a few narrow stretches without a guard on the inside, so just be careful if you’re a bit unsteady on your feet. A unique experience seeing the sights from a decent vantage point. Took us just over 90 mins. Would do again if we’re back in York.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 15, 2024

Based at the Staycity Aparthotel right next to Fishergate Bar the walls were an obvious venue for an evening stroll. Although the views of the city were not always picture postcard perfect, the changing aspects of the minster were fascinating; it is hard to overstate just how much York is dominated by its mediaeval cathedral. The various architectural styles of even the more humble buildings build up a picture of how steeped in history the city actually is. The walls themselves are stunning, particularly where they meet the several ancient city gates, or bars. Particularly interesting is Walmgate Bar with its added barbican and the Elizabethan house (now a coffee shop) built into its upper levels. Along from here is the so-called Red Tower which marks a natural break in the encircling walls where an extensive marsh rendered them unnecessary. Brick-built, there is an interesting projection on the opposite side of the building to the junction with the wall. This is the privy, originally opening onto the big below; child generated sound effects optional!
A word of warning. Covid restrictions have made the walls temporarily one-way (although this was far from universally observed), with passage being in a clockwise direction. This means that, unless you plan to do the whole circuit of the city, around two miles, you will have to take a ground based route when travelling in the opposite direction. However, this can provide an interesting contrasting view in itself and need not be a problem.
The paved surface of the walls does allow passage for buggies but there are a couple of flights of stairs to negotiate at each of the city gates. I would also advise caution if walking with young kids as over much of their length the walls only have a parapet on one side, the other side being an unprotected drop if several feet onto a bank of short grass. Where a harder landing would occur, metal railings are fitted.
In conclusion, if time permits every visitor should try to visit at least a short section of the walls. Even the incomparable route into the city from the railway station, via Lendal Bridge allows this.

York Wall is not only attractive but you are allowed to walk along it. It is a lovely walk where you can soak up the atmosphere and heritage of this beautiful city of York. There are lots of nearby car parks that lead on to the wall. We parked on Nunnery car park and the council gave a reduction for parking during August 2020 to help us support our business in this difficult time. A great city to visit.

I visited this attraction with my husband mid-week.
I have been several times before but my husband has never been.
There is no dedicated parking for the walls themselves but there are car parks close by to some access points or you can easily walk from anywhere in the City.
You can walk the full length of the walls in a couple of hours, either with a guide or on your own.
They are outdoors (obviously!) so doing it on a dry day is obviously better.
The walls are a big attraction so there are always other people walking them. But most people are very polite and make way for each other in passing places.
Some areas are pretty narrow so if you are pretty large then it can be a bit tight. But doable for all.
The are lots of entry points around the city so you are never far from being able to hop on them. And it's often quieter than walking at street level so a faster way to get from one point to the other.
It's something I would suggest all tourists do when visiting York.

In a city where you tend to pay over the odds for everything (don’t get me started on Yorkminster.....) it was a pleasant change to be able to wander around the city walls without having to dip into our wallets. You can detour downwards whenever it takes your fancy, and then pick up the wall again a bit further along. Good views as you see the city and its environs from different places and angles. Lots of history to read as you reach each Bar, or Gate. A nice way to spend an hour or two.

Well worth a wander around, it’s free which is always a bonus.
The wall is around 2 miles long, three quarters of it still stands so at times you have to drop back to street level and follow sign posts to rejoin.
Ignore the negative reviews on here, clearly written by people who can’t appreciate history. The experience is an opportunity to appreciate what went in to building the walls and what life would have been like living in or outside of its confines.
It’ll take you around an hour to walk around if you’re fit and don’t hang around. There are plenty of places to stop and rest if required.

Walking along these historic walls is free of charge and access can be made from various locations around the city. There are lots of steps to go up and down all along them so bare that in mind if you have any mobility issues. You get good views from up there so it’s worth taking time out to either walk part the way round or the full way. We only did a small section as the weather was wet and windy.

Our daughter is at University in York and we wanted to have a tourist day together. The two hour walk round York City Walls in late September sunshine fitted the bill perfectly. Given Covid19, there was a one way route and in one part you will need to wear a face mask as technically you are indoors (going down steps). Recommend to all unless you have mobility problems as there are lots of steps.

The walls are an interesting way to explore the boundaries of the old town.
Be aware that they are not disabled friendly, in fact in some places they are dangerous!
However, for the fit and able, you get some interesting views and plenty of interesting facts as you go round.
It is enjoyable, but in busier months, I can imagine you'll not get much time to stand around and admire the views!

thank you for your review, and you're quite right unfortunately as they are a scheduled moment and largely following the medieval wall layout it is impossible to modiy them to be disabled friendly, as it would involve some element of destruction of the walls. However there are sections that are accessible (South bank by Lendal Bridge), in addition St Marys Abbey walls and the museum gardens are fully accessible and an excellent way to see the most fascnating stretch of the walls

The York City walls is a 4.5km circuit around the inner city, that takes 1 to 2 hours to walk (depending how fast you go, and how often you stop for the views etc). We walked it in just under an hour.
The views of the York Minster are beautiful.
There are quite a lot of ups and downs in terms of staircases, and a couple of stretches where the walls no longer exist but there are small markers on the pavements marking the route of the walls and some signposts to help you find your way.

The city walls were striking. The Friends of York City Walls website has a most excellent (and free) guide to the walls, with detailed info on the history and things to look out for. It made my walk much more enjoyable. I spent 5 hours doing the 2-mile loop and I still felt I didn't see everything!

How long roughly would it take to get from Walmgate bar to Miclegate bar?
Written September 15, 2021
Depends:
* If you walk through town - approx 20 minutes.
* If you stayed on the walls and walked 'around the city' in a northerly route - I'd say 45/50 minutes.
* If you stayed on the walls and walked around the city in a southerly route, approx 20 minutes.

How long does it generally take to walk the wall.
Written January 29, 2020
Agree takes a couple of hours but you can walk smaller sections and go on and off walls to see other attractions.

I understand that there are breaks in the walk where the wall no longer exists, is there sufficient signage to get you to the next part of the original wall walk?
Written December 16, 2019
Yes there is enough signage and specific "wall" maps available as it is a walking trail....enjoy!

Hi my mum has trouble walking so I'll have a wheelchair with me. Are the walls wheelchair friendly please? Thank you.
Written August 9, 2018
I wouldn’t recommend it as some parts of the wall end in steps and aren’t very wide. Other parts have no railing and a steep drop to the exposed side too.

Hi. My husband gets nervous at certain heights. Would the Walls prove problematic?

I am afraid of heights as well. I did not find it problematic. at points the wall is open on one side (the inside) usually where there are sloping grades down from the wall...not a steep drop
