On our way back from a day trip to York from nearby Selby. 6pm on a Saturday teatime, stopped by a security guard at the entrance to the platforms, checking our bags and telling us that half a dozen bottles of Xmas gift beers from York Brewery couldn't be taken onto the station as it's a new scheme, 'dry Saturday... A train into town was easy to organize. The station was busy and bustling with plenty of travellers coming and going. We did need a trip to the loo but had to go elsewhere as the queue was very long. So had to find an alternative place to go! The station looked clean and tidy.

Magnificent arched roof and interesting open footbridge, this is an enormous station which indicates its importance in Britain's railway heritage and history. Less important now but still a major crossroads in the north. The tiling adjacent to the main entrance, on the platform side, includes a fascinating mosaic depicting the entire rail network around the area as it was in... More

York, the railway capital of Britain, has a suitably impressive station, architecturally superior to many found in larger cities. The retail outposts here are somewhat disappointing, and an M&S Food outpost would be very welcome, especially when compared to the overpriced and mediocre fare found at WhistleStop.

I've never thought to rate a station before but I make an exception for York. Its bright, airy and full of character, not least the old bridge. There's such a calm, relaxed atmosphere, so unlike other stations I've been to during rush hour. Very Harry Potterish!

We enjoyed a drink in the pub which leads on to one of the platforms. Very relaxing, and the platforms also had seating for while we waited for our train.
