York Art Gallery has recently reopened following an £8m redevelopment. There is now 60% more exhibition space in which to showcase the gallery's most famous Victorian, Modern and Contemporary works including pieces by Walter Sickert, Sir Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Paul Nash, David Hockney, Sarah Lucas and Henri Fantin-Latour. The gallery's collection of Italian Old Masters is displayed alongside substantial new research which is complimented by loans from major public collections. York Art Gallery is now also home to the new Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) which is housed in two new spaces created within York Art Gallery - the mezzanine level in the original Victorian Roof Void and a newly built gallery above the Madsen Galleries. Together they make up 450m squared of exhibition space.

Visited as part of the York Museum Trust tickets that we bought at the Castle Museum. The ceramic collection is very extensive and the layout of the museum is very well thought out. The one hall of paintings was very good, but the collection on display was limited for the admission fee that is charged. There was a special exhibition... More

York art gallery you imagine would have plenty of art, we visited and found half the gallery shut, there were pictures on the staircase which were hard to look at as the foot traffic prevented you stopping and then a room with art after this it was more pottery and a display of 10,0000 pots, which I could not understand,... This is a friendly gallery well situated in the heart of York. We just missed the Flesh exhibition on the ground floor, but were delighted by the huge, and relatively new, collection of ceramics, donated by Anthony Shaw, on the first floor Unfortunately, the lighting on the main display case which runs the full length of the gallery is poor.... Current exhibition 'Flesh' very good . Many different interpretations of work put together that challenging our idea of who we see . The gallery is small but very good Ceramics and local interest . Not sure it is worth £7.50 . Cafe is very pleasant with some goo menu choices.

Some great art works in the York Art Gallery but what particularly captured my interest was the tremendous ceramics collection. The display was both informative and attractive with one long cabinet showing ceramics arranged by colours of the rainbow. Lots of information about individual contemporary potters and a great bookshop. I look forward to visiting again next time I'm in... More

This is a small art museum but very well done and you can tell the staff take great pride in the museum. It only takes about 1-2 hours to see the entire museum. The ceramics exhibit is extensive.
