York Art Gallery has recently reopened following an £8m redevelopment. There is now 60% more exhibition space in which to showcase the gallery's most famous Victorian, Modern and Contemporary works including pieces by Walter Sickert, Sir Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Paul Nash, David Hockney, Sarah Lucas and Henri Fantin-Latour. The gallery's collection of Italian Old Masters is displayed alongside substantial new research which is complimented by loans from major public collections. York Art Gallery is now also home to the new Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) which is housed in two new spaces created within York Art Gallery - the mezzanine level in the original Victorian Roof Void and a newly built gallery above the Madsen Galleries. Together they make up 450m squared of exhibition space.

Excellent ceramics collection

I really enjoyed this small to mid-sized art museum. I especially appreciated the ceramics collection, which seems to be a specialty/point of pride for the gallery. I wish there... read more

This is a fabulous asset to my favourite city. I was a regular visitor to the old gallery and the improvements were well worth the wait. It is a light, airy space with room to step back and admire the exhibits. The staff are helpful and unobtrusive. On the ground floor most of the space is currently devoted to the... More

The new and updated Art Gallery in York is well worth a visit. It is a light airey building with a superb collection of paintings from the 13th century to modern times. It also houses the Centre of Ceramic Art with the best collection of studio pottery in the North of England. Easy to spend a full day. The in-house... More

I really enjoyed this small to mid-sized art museum. I especially appreciated the ceramics collection, which seems to be a specialty/point of pride for the gallery. I wish there had been better labeling of the ceramics in the gallery. Also enjoyed the Mark Hearld temporary exhibit (I bought the big catalogue). The exhibits were thoughtful and integrated.

As a resident of York we used to get in to the art gallery and museums by way of paying for them in our council tax but now this has stopped and so most of us have to wait for the annual residents weekend to get in for free and so we visted yesterday. We had to wait in a... More

The York Art Gallery re-opened in 2015 following a big renovation and we were pleased that we still loved spending an afternoon wandering around taking in the exhibits. We both particularly enjoyed the 2 rooms dedicated to York. The only downsides are the pricey entrance fee and expensive coffee shop.

Went for the first time since refurb and since charges were introduced. Think if I had paid £7.50 I would have felt ripped off. As it was I got in free this weekend as it was residents weekend. Wow what a long queue, all the people like me who will not pay! It was very nice and the York paintings... More

An excellent layout of different genres and ages of art - whether it is paintings, sculpture or pottery. The ceramics gallery is very impressive as are the various painting of William Etty an L.S. Lowry. Great to see more modern artists given a showing.

I spent several hours in the gallery today trying to figure out what I felt was lacking and finally put my finger on it thanks to a conversation with a (lovely) volunteer guide (though why aren't they paying staff when they charge an exorbitant entrance fee?). This gallery and its curatorial staff cannot distinguish between certain types of taste- deemed... More

First visit to the Gallery since refurbishment and enjoyed it. Really liked the room given to pictures of York. Loved the 3 Lowry's and some of the large scale pictures upstairs were interesting. Only disappointment (minor) was lack of postcards in the shop.

Had a refurb since I was last there. Some very good art from various ages. Not a busy gallery so very pleasant to wonder. When I was there there was some delightfully silly and coarse contemporary porcelain in amongst the very fine classical art. There is a fine room called the lumber room which is more like the Castle Museum... More
