York Art Gallery has recently reopened following an £8m redevelopment. There is now 60% more exhibition space in which to showcase the gallery's most famous Victorian, Modern and Contemporary works including pieces by Walter Sickert, Sir Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Paul Nash, David Hockney, Sarah Lucas and Henri Fantin-Latour. The gallery's collection of Italian Old Masters is displayed alongside substantial new research which is complimented by loans from major public collections. York Art Gallery is now also home to the new Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) which is housed in two new spaces created within York Art Gallery - the mezzanine level in the original Victorian Roof Void and a newly built gallery above the Madsen Galleries. Together they make up 450m squared of exhibition space.

This is a really good gallery free to visit apart from specialist exhibitions, in the centre of york and accessible to all.

While not a great lover of art I did enjoy this place . I loved the first world war pictures downstairs and while they are only there for most of this year its nice that these sort of object get out of london occasionally. Tourists with a tight schedule can often feel overwhelmed by the massive "world class" collections found in major art museums. I have often found smaller museums to be just the right size to experience while traveling and to come away with a better sense of both the mission, the locale and the history than I do with large institutions. And... More

Whilst the gallery is reasonable I object to paying so much to get in. This is no way to encourage people to visit.

We only had a limited time to view the lovely Art Gallery and I wish we had had longer so I would advise anyone to go in the morning and give yourself plenty of time. There were seats where my husband could sit and view the paintings which was a bonus to me as I didn't feel he was getting... More

Quite a nice morning out. The WW1 exhibit was really interesting and was definitely my favourite part. We spent about half an hour but you could easily spend longer if you read all the information about the paintings and got involved in the interactive parts (nice if you take kids). I wouldn't have gone and paid full price as I'm... More

I confess to being a bit sceptical about this but was blown away by the building, the superb knowledgeable and friendly staff and the quality of the exhibits. The current special display on the art of world war 1 is just stunning and leaves you completely overwhelmed and astonished. You are by turns moved, humbled, angry, outraged and saddened. The... An absolute must see exhibition of paintings of WW1 paintings. I only arrived at 1600 so had only an hour and therefore spent most of my time at this temporary exhibition. Some of the paintings I have seen at the Imperial War Museum , however many were new to me and the exhibition was beautifully curated. Their permanent collection, which... More

I was very imprssed by this art gallery. The temporary exhibition on World War II art was very well laid out and informative and the pictures and scuplture brought the subject to life. Ceramics upstairs were amazing.

I don't normally write reviews on here, but I am a passionate believer that our country's culture and history should be freely available and on display for all to benefit and learn from. I was disappointed to be charged on entry, let me be blunt. I paid the charge, however, and entered the gallery - whilst I cannot fault the... More
