York Art Gallery has recently reopened following an £8m redevelopment. There is now 60% more exhibition space in which to showcase the gallery's most famous Victorian, Modern and Contemporary works including pieces by Walter Sickert, Sir Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Paul Nash, David Hockney, Sarah Lucas and Henri Fantin-Latour. The gallery's collection of Italian Old Masters is displayed alongside substantial new research which is complimented by loans from major public collections. York Art Gallery is now also home to the new Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) which is housed in two new spaces created within York Art Gallery - the mezzanine level in the original Victorian Roof Void and a newly built gallery above the Madsen Galleries. Together they make up 450m squared of exhibition space.

We were waiting at the door for this gallery to open and we were very satisfied with what was on offer. It is a fantastic building, and well laid out. The visiting exhibition was "Flesh" and although not everything was to our taste, there were some excellent pieces on show, Certainly thought provoking. Absolutely loved the ceramics and the clever/casual... More

We love art and decided to visit at 4:00pm on the Saturday in December. By 4:20 (and £20 light ) we left. If what they have on show here is called 'art' then it as surely lost its way. Sad.

The Flesh exhibition was very interesting, inspiring lots of thoughts about flesh and with some real stars in the exhibition.

Lovely place. An eclectic mix of paintings in the permanent exhibition but the variety added interest. The ceramics display is first class. We also saw the temporary exhibition entitled "Flesh". An interesting collection of paintings, sculptures and installations giving a variety of different interpretations of the exhibition's title.

I'm no art buff, but really do enjoy wandering around galleries, enjoying the occasion to soak up art that hits my tastes. This location was free to all until recently and after an update now charges £7.50 per adult. The last few times I visited, it had a great family atmosphere, with people of all ages, including children enjoying their... More

M and I have just renewed our membership for next year as we have really enjoyed visiting the gallery this year. The staff are always helpful. Being local, we try to see every exhibition and have definitely had our money's worth in 2016. On this recent visit we popped in just to see the current exhibition on "Flesh" which was... More

The Victorian Art work on display at the York Art gallery is impressive and worth viewing. The cost of entry may put some off but value for money when looking and admiring the paintings.
