York Art Gallery has recently reopened following an £8m redevelopment. There is now 60% more exhibition space in which to showcase the gallery's most famous Victorian, Modern and Contemporary works including pieces by Walter Sickert, Sir Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Paul Nash, David Hockney, Sarah Lucas and Henri Fantin-Latour. The gallery's collection of Italian Old Masters is displayed alongside substantial new research which is complimented by loans from major public collections. York Art Gallery is now also home to the new Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) which is housed in two new spaces created within York Art Gallery - the mezzanine level in the original Victorian Roof Void and a newly built gallery above the Madsen Galleries. Together they make up 450m squared of exhibition space.

An amazing building that has been beautifully restored. The art is pretty good too. A must if you are in York and you like art.

Throw a family of two adults, one student and two teenagers, all with very different personalities and tastes, into an art gallery ... sounds like a recipe for disaster? Not at all!! York City Art Gallery has been shortlisted as Museum of the Year, and I'm not surprised. It's spaciously laid out, with clear descriptions and lots of interactive 'please... More

Spent a good 2 hours exploring the gallery and enjoyed the variety of exhibits. My daughter is about to start a degree in Fine Art and loved the amount of modern art on display

the galleries on the ground floor are mainly about wars, i couldn't stop my tears.... :( and for upstairs, it includes couture, sculptures, modern design and more. impressed by the "hands on" signs (because most of the museums and galleries are not allowed to do so), in which visitors can touch the art displays

Sorry I wanted to like this because York is such an awe inspiring place, and the setting for the Gallery behind a water feature, next to the city walls is lovely. However, were it not for the temporary exhibition of war art from Imperial War Museum, the gallery would have little to recommend it Bit of modern, bit of older,... More

I went with my young family for an afternoon at the Gallery. There were several different rooms with different themes, downstairs was all about World War I, which was somewhat harrowing viewing, but v good art. Upstairs was pottery and costumes and other items. The childrens area is good with an interactive feature where children can colour their own pots... More

OK, so the art on display may not be to everyone's taste. But it does feature everything from paintings to pottery. I love the visitor interaction element with sketchbooks, drawing materials and coloured pencils provided in every gallery where you can draw your favourite piece of art on display at the gallery. This was an activity I enjoyed doing as... More
