York Art Gallery has recently reopened following an £8m redevelopment. There is now 60% more exhibition space in which to showcase the gallery's most famous Victorian, Modern and Contemporary works including pieces by Walter Sickert, Sir Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Paul Nash, David Hockney, Sarah Lucas and Henri Fantin-Latour. The gallery's collection of Italian Old Masters is displayed alongside substantial new research which is complimented by loans from major public collections. York Art Gallery is now also home to the new Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) which is housed in two new spaces created within York Art Gallery - the mezzanine level in the original Victorian Roof Void and a newly built gallery above the Madsen Galleries. Together they make up 450m squared of exhibition space.

Although there is currently an exhibition called "Flesh" in the gallery there was no one exhibit that was memorable or made us think we had to go back to see it. The "Lumber Room" gallery was just pretentious nonsense and the ceramics section was instantly forgettable.

An interesating although not a great collection, mostly with minor works by major names or excellent work by lesser known artists. But do make sure you head upstairs, beyond the paintings, where there is one of the most wonderful display of ceramics I have ever seen. Even if you don't think you are interested in ceramics, do give it a... More

Although my kids did not like the 'Flesh' exhibition on the ground floor (this closes next month I believe) the second floor offered more hands on opportunities which they enjoyed and it provided a good break from the city wall walk

Me and my boyfriend (both artists) initially didn't plan on visiting however we bought a ymt card therefore admission was 'free' so we thought why not? I really enjoyed the flesh exhibition, such variety in the work and interpretations of the artists, some fascinating pieces! The upstairs gallery was cool, more historic pieces and objects you would typically find in... More

Have waited a long time for the re-opening of this gallery and being able to make the time to visit, not being a local. This is a lovely little gallery in a central location with several different halls. Some of the permanent exhibitions include a number of works by William Etty and the beautiful "Melanie" by Grayson Perry. There is... More

We went specifically to see the Flesh exhibition. Very interesting, some challenging work, some brilliant pieces. We then went round the rest of the gallery. Lots of ceramics, and an eclectic gallery of stuff, which was slightly odd, but engaging. I'll go again in a few months as there will be changes, particularly to the newly started art garden.

Great to see in cold, rainy weather. Or any other time when visiting York. Included on the pass for 4 attractions for 22 pounds/adults. Seeing 3 things pays for the pass.

Visited the Art Gallery in February and was pleasantly surprised by how well the gallery is presented, making a real effort to engage with visitors and produce innovative displays. The Flesh exhibition was unexpected and a thought provoking look at how art thinks of and shows flesh in all its forms.

Our first visit since the refurb and we were not disappointed . The building has been given a great face lift and has been opened out giving a light airy feeling. The main display at the moment has been given over to an exhibition entitled ''Flesh '' and this occupies all of the round floor galleries. This is a celebration... More

First of all let me say that the architecture of the gallery itself is very impressive and its lovely to sit outside on a sunny day. I have rated the attraction only 3 stars as I personally not a fan of ceramics, pottery and modern art, which is what is mainly housed in the museum. If this is your cup... More
