York Art Gallery has recently reopened following an £8m redevelopment. There is now 60% more exhibition space in which to showcase the gallery's most famous Victorian, Modern and Contemporary works including pieces by Walter Sickert, Sir Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Paul Nash, David Hockney, Sarah Lucas and Henri Fantin-Latour. The gallery's collection of Italian Old Masters is displayed alongside substantial new research which is complimented by loans from major public collections. York Art Gallery is now also home to the new Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) which is housed in two new spaces created within York Art Gallery - the mezzanine level in the original Victorian Roof Void and a newly built gallery above the Madsen Galleries. Together they make up 450m squared of exhibition space.

Some very unusual and difficult ceramics and a good collection historically as well. Also a good collection of 17th and 18th cent. paintings and a quirky collection of paintings that are curious and humorous. Worth a stop, very different.

Located in a period building but with an excellent, modern exhibition space. The current exhibition was fantastic. "The Sea's the Limit" is a thought-provoking, well-curated exhibition.

Oh, and here's another positive: they have a higher percentage of women artists than just about anyone else. Still--does it really matter if third rate art is by a woman or man? We felt totally ripped off to pay the entry fee and be done...More

Very interesting exhibition of contemporary art and ceramics, at first I thought £7.20 was expensive but it was so good and well worth every penny. In the past York Gallery has not had such interesting and contemporary work exhibited

York Art Gallery is a fine, small, provincial gallery. Smart and well-curated, it is in its own way a model of how such a gallery should be. However the extraordinarily high entrance fee will detract all but the most well-heeled art lovers from visiting -...More

Ground floor paintings gallery was closed, but very sensibly we were only charged half price entry. Interesting ceramics and other stuff upstairs, inc Bernard Leach and Grayson Perry pottery pieces. The 2 staff in the Anthony Shaw section were friendly and informative. Nice loos.

We went specifically to see the Paul Nash exhibition (which has now finished) and was actually rather disappointed as I was expecting more of his significant paintings. It was curated by someone called John Stezaker and you wondered if part of the deal was that...More
