About
York Mansion House is the official residence of the Lord Mayor of York, positioned at the heart of city society and civic life for almost 300 years. A masterpiece of 18th century architecture and a celebration of the city it inhabits, York Mansion House and its infamous residents have a colourful history, filled with scandal, decadence and outlandish feasting. Following extensive restoration, in 2018 the house opened to the public for the first time, allowing all to experience this extravagant mayoral life, and take an interactive walk through York’s Georgian past. From July 22nd 2020, we’re delighted to be reopening with a series of brand new, bookable guided tours. With visitor safety our priority, we have put a number of steps in place to ensure you feel welcome, safe and comfortable during your visit with us. Head to our website to find out how we’ve been getting ready for this new chapter.

Fab guides make Mayor’s house tour excellent
A lovely tour of the still functioning Georgian residence of York’s mayor. Well laid out with lots of interesting features, enhanced by excellent, enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides. We took in a cooking demonstration in the Georgian kitchen ( no tasting!) and had a guided tour (free) for the rest of the house. Audio guides available.

Georgian oasis in the heart of York
Have visited the Mansion House quite a few times now and it always surprises me how few locals realise you can visit. The building is absolutely stunning and there is a fascinating collection of civic artefacts on display. The kitchen has to be seen to be believed! Lots of fun activities for wee ones as well, we loved looking for the ‘hobs’!

Would recommend visiting the Mansion Hall
We went on a very wet Sunday morning for the 11.0 am tour, and were surprised that we were the only ones on it. Most interesting gentleman (Simon) showed us round. He was extremely informative and happy to answer our questions. A thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile experience. Thank you.

    Halloween Event - Spookeasy
Absolutely amazing night, cast were great and it was everything promised. Free welcome drink on arrival, we truly felt like we were in a 1920s mystery. Would go back next year! More people need to see this hidden gem in York - the Georgian house is beautiful and the volunteer's that work here are helpful, friendly and want to show the place off.

    Ghost Week 'Spookeasy' Event
Amazing evening at the Mansion House's "Spookeasy" event! A night filled with mystery, fun and exploration. Felt like such a privilege to be let loose around such an incredible building and for this to be enhanced with such whimsy and theatre provided by the cast. The evening was incredible from start to finish, with such care and attention to detail to provide a real engaging and fun experience for Halloween. When we found out that the cast was made up of volunteers from the Mansion House we were blown away. You could really see how much love and care they have for the building and it's history. To create such an incredible event to draw attention towards such a magnificent piece of history for York is touching. We will ABSOLUTELY be visiting again and encourage everyone to do the same, visitors or York residents!

    Worth the visit
The outside façade gives the impression of a grand interior and you will not be disappointed, also there is a discount on the entrance fee of 25% for English Heritage members. This is the home of the Lord Mayor. A free audio guide is available which is very helpful and informative, especially if one of the guided tours is not available. The rooms are all well laid out from the main dining room, the large kitchen, the ballroom and the displays of the Lord Mayors chains etc of Office. There are also things for kids to do. A small shop as you leave.

    Grand mayoral residence
Well presented formal house intended as home to the Lord Mayor and still used as such when required. Informative displays and great to wander around. Do ask about the secret cupboard in the ballroom and the 'resident' cat. Volunteer guide was well-informed and explained things very clearly. Not a masiive house, but well worth an hour or so.

    Great experience
Absolutely loved this place! We met Geoff (I think he was a volunteer guide) made us feel Welcome and gave us lots of educational knowledge about the mansion. We had the privilege of meeting the Mayor of York whilst we were there. He was an absolute charming man. Later we found out that he is a reverend as-well) Well worth every penny of visiting this place. 10/10

Hello visted the mansion House today 28th October. The building and the contents were spectacular. The guide i had Georgia was very pleasent and very knowledgeable about the building. The tour was excellent and even in the conditions we are all under because of covid was superb. I felt very comfortable going round would definitely recommend it to anyone to visit

Despite having walked past it so many times, we had never actually been inside the Mansion House and were very impressed with our visit. Our guide Isaac was funny and very knowledgeable, and whether by COVID restrictions or just luck apart from one other guest we had a private tour which was wonderful. The building and its history is fascinating, and while the tour ran for 55 minutes, it could easily have gone on for much longer and still been interesting. We also came back before Christmas for a popup fine dining experience, and it was a beautiful setting for this too. A gem hidden in plain sight that I would highly recommend.

The House was closed for annual restoration work, but for the first time they organised these tours. They were a look at the restoration work being done, including the chance to clean some Georgian silverware; interspersed with a small afternoon tea.
It was well organised, our hostess was very knowledgeable and our tour was unhurried. It was particularly interesting to have a 'hands on' clean of a piece of silverware.
The experience lasted 90 minutes and cost just £7.50 each.
We both enjoyed it and are looking forward to returning for a 'proper' visit to the House later in the year.

Thank you for your excellent review. We're really pleased you were able to attend our conservation tours - as it was our first year running them, we really value the feedback. We hope to be introducing some similar tours in the future so do keep an eye on our website. Your kind words have been passed to our team, and we hope to welcome you back to the Mansion House soon. Not the first place I think about visiting when I’m in the centre of York, however this house was a surprise hit. Whilst online booking is required to limit numbers, you feel like you have the house to yourself. There are different entrance fees depending on whether you are a resident, over 65 or have related memberships. Everyone is welcoming and there are lots of opportunities to learn more about the functions of the Mansion House.
I found the kitchens particularly interesting. It took us about an hour to get around.

York Mansion House was our choice for our Civil Ceremony considered perfect for the size of our party, steeped in history and cosy enough to feel intimate. The bonus on the day was the excellent contribution Isaac as Senior House Steward with two marvellous house stewards Rachel & Olivia who all showed great attention to detail and put a personal stamp on the day. The venue, the location, the service and overall memory of our special day in the the house is absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend YMH for everything it offers us, the public, to enjoy this lovely house in York centre

Thoroughly enjoyed a socially distanced guided tour of York Mansion. The lady that showed us around was extremely knowledgable and allowed time for us to ask questions and take pictures. There was so much to see within the house and I would 100% recommend anybody visiting York pays the mansion a visit.

Hugely enjoyable. The blurb says that beyond ‘the beautiful facade lies an inspiring, interactive environment where you can experience the story of York’s past and present’. You could easily spend a couple of hours here. They give you a tablet as part of the ticket price which is the perfect way to navigate your way round the rooms. I think my favourite was below stairs in the kitchen where an interactive display took you through a recipe for Boeuf a la Mode complete with threading lardons and whisking eggs to making a stuffing. Kids would love this!

Very interesting house. Staff very helpful, we were given a tablet which had lots of information for each room, it helped to make the visit more interactive. The house was quiet when we visited so we spent a lot of time in each room. Fascinating insight to the life of a city mayor. Definitely worth visiting.

Two lovely people helped us understand the history and operation of this building with a small guided tour. It's well worth a look round but I'm sure most people walk past it without thinking. Needs booking now of course as everything does but I doubt its massively oversubscribed as its understated elegance!

We went in a group at 4pm , Wed 26 May. Booking was easy to do online and checking in to the venue was easy. Staff on welcome desk very friendly and told us about the iPad guides we could borrow to use round the house. We had a really lovely time. Also a staff member upstairs told us about the state room and showed us a secret cupboard behind a painting. It was a really good experience.
