Lovely maintained walls and gatehouse. History information also well done. The problem is that this end of York, Bootham/Gillygate and Exibition Square is too congested with traffic, tourist buses spew fumes, and the pollution tends to trap in the gatehouse.
Plan your visit to a less busy time, stay on the walls away from roads if you can and keep asking why York seems so unbothered by the out of control pollution/congestion.

Really worth a short stop as you walk around the city . Well preserved section of the old city walls and this key gate ( bar) . Nice way to enter through and get a brilliant view of the minster just 2 mins walk away. Decent old style pub under the Bootham bar as well ( the fat badger).

This is one of the four 'bars' with one of the oldest surviving stonework. The archway dates from the 11th century and the rest of the structure from the 14th century. In 1501 a door knocker was installed as Scots were required to knock first and seek permission from the Lord Mayor to enter the city. This gateway is located close to York Minster.

But as far as ancient gateways go this is pretty good. Started the wall walk here and squeezed the pram up the stairs!! I would say worth a visit but it's hard to miss this if you are visiting York

This is a great historical gate, showing entry into old York.
The plaque on the gate states that this former Roman border wall of York was cut through to fit Princess Margaret's carriage (Henry VIII's sister).
Enjoy!

This is a good entry way or terminus for a walk along the wall paired with Monk Bar. It is also better located to other attractions and services in the city.
Be wary of the dusk closure. In February, this meant being chased off the wall as early as 4:30PM.
Like many sites in York, this is not stroller friendly. There are many stair cases, large and small, up and down. Drop the baby in a sling or backpack if taking them along.

One of the original gates to the city very close to the minster. The entrance to Bootham District of York. Love the history of this gate.

The history of this city gate goes back almost two millennia into Roman times. The earliest parts of the present structure are from the 11th and 12th centuries. It’s a spectacular reminder of the times when cities needed far tighter external security than they do now. Well worth visiting.

Hello:
I am planning a trip to York and would like to clarify the hours pedestrians can walk through the bars (gates) in the city walls. I've read that the walls are closed at dusk. Are the gates closed at that time as well? I'd like the information so I can determine what the best lodging option would be for me. We plan to be there in November 2015.
Thank you, Shannon Hanson, Oregon, USA
