    A splendid city centre landmark
Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is one of the most remarkable and extensive secular historic buildings in York. It houses the largest extant Guildhall used today for York University graduations and other ceremonies. It includes a chapel, a multitude of historic furniture, portraits of civic dignitaries and a cafe.

Great for anyone interested in the history of York
I had just finished reading a series of novels and the last one was based around York in Charles II time. The Hall was specifically described in the novel and it was great to see how the reality met my imagination. It is a beautiful building and has a really interesting history, is well laid out with good explanatory information. There is also a small cafe which we didn't use but the food looked good. I have difficulty standing for long periods so it was good to see so many chairs dotted around the various rooms.

    Perfect escape from York crowds
This is a really interesting medieval guild hall which makes a peaceful alternative to much of the rest of York’s tourist offering. We spent a pleasant hour here. There is just the right amount of captioning and information covering nearly 700 years of history. Recommended!

    Totally Perfect
We used this stunning venue for our daughters wedding this weekend and cannot fault it in any way. The building is stunning and the staff gave 100% into making it the most perfect day. The gardens are so well kept and you couldn't tell you were situated in central York 2 minutes from The Shambles. Our family wedding was utterly perfect and the staff at this beautiful venue played a massive part in the day.

    Interesting historical building
This is a beautiful building and the historical information is excellent. Just some feedback for them is that the stacks of modern blue chairs along both sides of the upper hall room ruined the atmosphere and the photos. I don’t see them in other photos so there must be room to store them elsewhere - we were disappointed in that.

interesting building with wonderful wooden beams and flooring.
The cafe was nice but we were told "As we are busy there would be a 10 minute wait before we could order anything" even just for tea or coffee. Seems strange as it was not full.

This is a spectacular building, beautifully restored, and teh one hour guided tour was extremely professional. It is a very good idea to book ahead. This building has been in use for many centuries and is one of the largest medieval halls to have survived in the UK.

Been visiting York for day trips and overnights for 25+ years and never been to Merchants Hall before - it was amazing and educational.

Toilets and cafe and shop all superb. As English Heritage members it was half price admission but even full price it’s great value for money. Staff all around were super.

Cafe had a lovely range of food made fresh and delicious. They were so accommodating of our very hungry baby!!

We will be back with our year ticket

Well, popped into the garden for a cup of tea two weeks ago ... very impressed
by the professionalism of the staff (and the Earl Gray tea was lovely) and the menu.

We went back last Saturday lured by the Plowman's Lunch and Mediterranean Salad options. Were we disappointed? Absolutely not!! Although served in a cardboard box with disposable cutlery (Understandable) both meals were delicious and absolutely value for money. Just we both would have liked a wee bit onion in our salads,
I know it's personal choice so next time we'll bring it with us next time!

Thank you so much

We went on a guided tour of the Merchant Adventurer's Hall last week. We were part of a very small group so it was easy to observe all the restricted measures.

The tour guide was knowledgeable and the history of how the Merchant Adventurers first emerged and the work they continue to do, was very interesting.

Our only criticism would be that whilst the guide told us that we would have time to look around and take photographs at the end of the tour; we didn't realise that we would be given all of five minutes (the whole tour lasts an hour and they only allow five minutes within that for a look around!) in which to do it, which simply wasn't long enough and spoiled our enjoyment because there was so much more that we wanted to explore. Shame!

Dear Finedining Amber. Thank you for your review. We are sorry that you were disappointed with aspects of your tour of the Merchant Adventurers' Hall. We allow a small amount of time to see the rooms which are too small for larger groups after the tour, we appreciate that this might not be enough time for everyone. However if anyone on the tours had requested more time to explore we would of course have been happy to facilitate that. Thanks again for your constructive review.

This is a 600+ year old guild hall in York. There are three main areas to see: the undercroft, the chapel, and the very impressive great hall, plus a small café and gift shop. Large displays describe the history of the building and the guild. It’s amazing that the building has survived so long – an interesting place to visit.

Incredible little known cafe in a lovely garden with a medieval building as the backdrop. All tables are well spaced, regularly cleaned with prompt service. It just seemed a calm oasis in a busy city. Food and cakes were delicious plus it has a licence sowe were able to havexs glass of wine....how civilised.

Walking down Fossgate you could miss the small red door even with the large coat of arms above it. However this leads to a real hidden gem of historical York.

Not only is the building beautiful it is full of various historical artefacts and is deceptively large especially if you’ve come from the Fossgate entrance.

The audio tour was informative without being long winded and really added to the experience however the various rooms do have information boards up as well and the venue also offers a printed version if you don’t like an audio guide.

It also has a cafe that really does live up to the many positive reviews I saw and although the cafe is small they do have outdoor seating in the beautiful gardens.

Also a mention to the staff who were really nice especially those in the cafe who were really busy but still had a smile on their faces.

The historic building was very interesting giving a wide range of invitation on the history of York.
The beautiful garden, shaded with arbours, was a beautiful green and quiet space.
Excellent sandwiches and quiche. We will be back!

Seeing this building from outside is a visual delight and it has a fascinating history that gives a real glimpse of the guild tradition that was so important in medieval York.

We have done the audio tour in the past but on this occasion we just wandered as we chose.

The chapel is a particularly interesting area and both it and the undercroft give an interesting view of the changing ground levels and the impact of floods.

There is a pleasant cafe and shop.
