    Torturous!
Spooky, amusing and informative! Great actors! I was drawn into their gruesome tales! There were a couple of (brave) children who enjoyed it and definitely good entertainment for adults. Going through Saxon times up to Dick Turpin. The actors made this the great experience that it was.
GUILTY! I find this review GUILTY for conspiring with other peasants to have a 'orrible time with us lot here at The York Dungeon! The creatures must have taken a shine to you as you all made it out ALIVE, well done! And thank you for the five green dots of DOOM!

    Just amazing!!
OMG!! What a fantastic visit to the Dungeon and yes I nearly wet my nickers at the scary fun! Lol. So well presented by a talented group of young actors who stayed completely in character throughout. They told their stories with frightening but fun special effects selecting victims from the audience to assist with the grizzly tales. But I have to say all enjoyed the experience so much. A big thank you to all the actors and staff who made this a great day out. It’s definitely a 20 out of 10 from me. You won’t regret a visit here!! Denise xx
Oh no, we do not want a mess on our nice clean floors thank you! So glad you did not wet oneself! But it sounds like you had a great time with us 'orrible lot. We have treated our Witch to a little run around the yard for a bit, no wait,,, she's gone! Anyway we will take 20 out of 10 any day, thank you Chief Peasant named Denise! Our new best friend!

The Dungeons one can visit again & again
Second time but this time with my husband, it was just as brilliant as the first time. We had booked for the 4pm, but sadly the other people didnt turn up, they kindly offered us to either go on our own, but with it being interactive you really needed for than two people to really enjoy it, this was not there fault, so we opted to come back for the 10.30 show the next day. What has changed is they now allow people with wheelchairs to enjoy the experience, which was really go, and like everyone else they were picked on my the actor's. The whole experience was incredible, the interaction was superb, lots of laughs in every room. Lots of interesting history, but made fun. Definitely good for all ages. When speaking to the staff, when collecting photos (fun photos taken at the start of the tour) I said I had been before, and although it had changed, it was just as good as last time, they said they change it quite often, so that people like myself enjoy experiencing it all over again, which we definitely did. It was the highlight of our honeymoon. Thank you guys for another brilliant experience.
A honeymoon highlight eh? We are honored, you are making us blush now. Thank you you bunch of traitors for the lovely review and five green dots of DEATH on the Advisor That Trips. We like to make sure everyone can DIE here... sorry VISIT here and making sure that each peasants are involved in the tours. Come back again Mrs Ball and Chain and Mr Regret!

    Excellently terrifying
I wasn't sure what to expect from this attraction but it certainly exceeded my expectations. The concept has been well thought out. The whole experience was brilliant. It was very atmospheric and you really were wondering all the time what was going to happen next. Its not scary as such but does have you jumping and screaming from time to time. The actors were really good and so realistic you forgot sometimes that they were acting. Wouldn't advise anyone who is very nervy to go but otherwise an enjoyable and terrifying experience. Definitely worth visiting.
Expect the unexpected, especially that Witch! Thank you for taking the time to write a review about our 'orrible lot. You made it out alive, the creatures must have taken a shine to you. We will get you, next time.

    Brilliantly horrible!
Creepy, jumpy fun! The fabulous acting brings all the gruesome (and smelly!) scenes to life - we laughed, we were on edge, we loved the interaction and we won’t forget our experience in a long time! Children rated it a solid 12 out of 10!

    York dungeon!
This was a really fun and thrill seeking experience. I went with my 11 year old daughter and we had utmost fun! It was really well acted out and layed out perfectly. Expect some jump scares every now and then and a little bit of audience participation. Overall I would definitely recommend and it was such a good experience 😀
Oh no, you and the little peasant SURVIVED! PISH, panic ye not... still time to come back and meet your fate at the hands of Ivor The Boneless! Blood Eagle anyone? Thank you traitors for darkening our doorway and for the nice review.

    Good fun.
Went here on Saturday to have a break from pubs and shops. Good fun and actors are really good!. All put a lot of effort in to what they do. The witch cage was creepy, but witch or not. She was pretty cute!. Highly recommended.
Oh yes, our Isabella is DEAD GOOD. But yes she is a witch, she will indeed be hung by dawn. Dawn is covering for the usual Hangman at Knavesmire. Thank you for the five green dots here on the advisor that trips.

Scary, funny and brilliant SFX- a must experience in York
Brilliant experience you can’t miss if in York! As someone who works in TV, the acting was fantastic. The stories and jump scares were spot on. My partner from the states loved it. The comedic timing and jokes were so funny I cried laughing. Also the special FX were very impressive. Thank you to everyone at the venue for giving us a highlight to our visit to York. I will definitely be visiting next time.
Why this is a review we LOVE/HATE to see! We shall feedback to our 'orrible creatures and we might just treat them to an extra bit of sunlight... We hope you come and darken our doorway again, peasant! And thank you for the five green dots of DOOM here on the advisor that trips!

    Quite the fright!
Had so much fun here today, thank you. The actors were so damn great in their roles really believable and I had quite a few frights as we went through. The audience participation was a good giggle and didn’t seem too cringe either!
What say you sister? Sounds like you had a right 'orrible time with our lot. Sorry, not sorry! As we say in Old Norse - Haidi thu, thank you for the review! And five green dots of DOOM here on the advisor that trips.

We went on the evening event for adults only, it starts with you being pushed into having your photo taken which of course is there for you to buy at the end. As the ticket price is £25.00 per person before you get to buying photos this event is not cheap.
You move from room to room with actors telling the story of the time, some were better than others, some good special effects, but some of the rooms disappointing. You can also find yourself part of the act so beware of you don't like being made to look silly. I was hoping for more scares and laughs.

Thank you for your review after visiting one of our recent Dungeon Evening events in 2021 - certainly this is a fairly new venture for us so we're continuously looking to develop the tours to make them even DARKER, SCARIER & ADULTIER! We absolutely will use this feedback, and all our other reviews (which fortunately are typically very positive) to drive the product forwards for our exclusive, evening tours... p.s. an evening with NO CHILDREN in the depths of the Dungeon certainly is a good escape and worth the three stars at least!

Fantastic service from staff and actors. We walked past on Monday morning and 6 year old son wanted to go in the Dungeons however we told him he was too Young. We mentioned this to the two members of staff who were setting up for the day outside the entrance. They said they wouldn't recommend as he was still too young but the guided walking tours of the city were just starting up today and we could book that. Even though they were not officially open they let us, book and told us to cone back for 3pm. We got back at 3pm to be told that no one else had booked and at this point we thought it would be cancelled however they still did the tour just for us with two actors. The two actors played there parts really really well and we had such a great time with them from the ghoulish and horrific too the humour side. We were all fully entertained from start too finish. Brilliant customer service and brilliant staff. Thank you very much.

My husband and I booked the week off for half term to have some Halloween fun with our children. (son 10 & daughter 6) whilst looking for ideas in York of what to do York dungeon trick or treat walking tour popped up. And I thought it was a good alternative to going into the actual dungeon venue as well as given us the opportunity to see York in a different more gruesome light much to the amusement of our children!!
Our tour guides the Jester and Smedley were amazing, and very knowledgeable about the history of York, throw in some fantastic cheesy jokes along the way! And it was a great experience. The pair kept all the children and even the adults entertained and the jester even interacted with other pedestrians along the wall making everyone laugh. Our 2 tour guides interacted with my 2 children with patience and friendliness and genuinely listened to my son when he was asking questions or telling them about his horrible histories book collection and how he liked the more gruesome side of history.
Would highly recommend to families as an great alternative or option for those who have younger children or children who are a bit unsure about being scared.

An excellent rundown of the frights & delights that guests experience on our Treat & Treat City Walking Tours from the Dungeon - with certainly some particularly strong recommendations and tips for all our future peasant guests! Especially for those with children or young families! p.s. the Jester & Smedley send you their regards... they're already looking forward to seeing you again one day... IF YOU DARE?!

Ingenious and wicked fun! Took an early birthday trip to York. Can’t visit the city without a trip to the Dungeon! Though I’d originally resigned myself to missing out on this occasion.

My friend surprised me by booking the tour (I had no idea you were doing these!)
As always you lot delivered 100%
The Black Jester and Smedley brought the history to life through sheer performance. Lunch time in York with the weather yesterday was busy and it was all drowned out by the engaging, hilarious and mesmerising performances!
You both must have been roasting in those outfits!

Well done to you guys for putting this together and anyone considering the walk should go for it you won’t be disappointed. My friend and I both work for the NHS and you brought us both some much much needed smiles and joy!
Can’t wait to visit again when you’ve reopened fully.
Smedley, you’re adorable! Keep singing !

Look left, look right and don’t be an idiot !

LOOK LEFT, LOOK RIGHT, LOOK ABOVE for a FANTASTIC REVIEW (and still don't be an idiot!) Thank you for your excellent 5 star review of our brand-spanking NEW York Dungeon Walking Tours. We will pass on your kind words to our actors... the notorious Black Jester and disgusting peasant Smedley have loved being back to enthral & entertain all our guests (even on the hottest of days)! We're so pleased that we could help you with some much needed smiles and joy after what has clearly been such a challenging year. All you NHS workers & beyond have inspired us throughout the last year or so, so if we can provide some entertainment & escapism for you finally then please do enjoy! We await your return to the true darkest depths of the York Dungeon...

In the days of social distancing everything is having to adapt, even our tourist attractions. The dungeon has done this well with very strict guidelines to keep everyone away fun each other in such a small setting.
A warning brit you enter says some parts of the attraction has changed or has been suspended.
All in all we went in about five different rooms with each presenter providing us with information on, for example, torture, saxon killings, punishments, and the plague.
The presenters were very dramatic and used visual aids very well.
I hope the dungeons can get back to a full ship soon.

Hi Helen! Thank you for your recent review of the Dungeon and for your appreciation of our new additional social-distancing and health & safety measures. You are absolutely correct in identifying that we have had to change a couple elements of the Dungeon attraction and tour however we do still retain a fully immersive actor-led experience that guests have loved since we reopened. Our only slight gripe that we would have to highlight is your mathematics... "about 5 different rooms" seems to sell us very short when we indeed have 9 live-actor shows and rooms to experience. These include the following: Black Jester, Vikings, Plague, Ghost, The Shambles, Guy Fawkes, Torture, Judge and the Curse of the Witch at the end. This combined with our Photo Op and Shop is all jam-packed in an experience lasting just under an hour!

We visited with 10yo and had a great time! We didn’t know what to expect but glad we chose to visit. The actors were superb and seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as the visitors. We will be recommending to friends and family and will hopefully return for the evening sessions when child is older.

We used the Kellogg vouchers to buy tickets online, but it would’ve been great value at full price.

A superb review... we do love it when you peasants/guests enter the Dungeon not knowing what to expect! We especially love it when we gently persuade (with the help of our resident Torturer) & convert you to becoming Dungeon superfans! All excellent feedback regarding the experience & our great value for money; and we'll certainly pass your kind (eughhh) words onto our despicable rogues & rascal actors. p.s. will you dare return to the Dungeon again one day!

It wasn’t brilliant but these guys did their best to scare us in the current COVID climate so average may seem quite unfair. The truth is it was a very good effort as the actors are performing to a small audience socially distanced and expressionless due to the need to wear face coverings. Nonetheless they carried on taking us back in time with spooky stories, gruesome props and convincing sets. I still managed to jump a few times.
Worth a visit for sure.

Hi fullyflatbed, thank you for your recent review - never the greatest start to read 'it wasn't brilliant' however we do think having read it all then you certainly enjoyed your visit and found a lot to be satisfied by in the end - spooky stories, gruesome props and convincing sets sounds good to us! You are absolutely right that we have indeed had to add a number of additional health & safety covid-19 measures and social-distancing throughout the tour - this is all listed on our website pre-visit at https://www.thedungeons.com/york/en/plan/covid-19-information-for-guests/. Some of our guests indeed consider the more intimate and personalised setting with smaller group sizes to have perhaps even enhanced the experience! Hopefully we can welcome you back to the Dungeon again in the future (you managed to jump a few times last time... let's see what happens next time!)

Unfortunately no pictures to accompany this review due to no mobile phones or photography throught the venue.

So, right from the main entrance. The staff on front we're fantastic and helpful. I was trying to purchase through my bluelight card as I receive discount for this place. The staff we're informative and very helpful.

So once inside the dungeons, the mood was very dark and eerie. You walk round in small groups, which is certainly advantageous lol. There are a total of 10 rooms you walk through, each providing a different theme of horror. Even down to the smells, you are drawn in and genuinely feel the mood and fear.

Throughout our venture within the dungeons, I was called up by the actors and actresses 3 times. This was very much to my wife's delight aswell haha. Both make up and acting was superb by all the staff.

The 9th room was the stand out of the whole venture though. This to me was worth the whole fee alone. I believe its the new one with the witch whom was a local resident in the 1600s. Now without spoiling anything, the act itself was an absolute masterpiece of nightmare's. The acting, the mood within 5 minute show was sublime. I love my horror films, and this really draws you in and you genuinely feel the fear. The female actress was fantastic! I've never seen anything like genuinely. I'm even sat there looking around and everyone, like me is captivated with fear and intrigue. If it wasn't for wanting to get out of the room so quick when the door opened, I would of given her a round of applause. Fantastic!

All in all this place was brilliant, and thoroughly enjoyed by myself and my wife. I did look at the entry price at first and thought it was expensive. But genuinely, it's worth it and pleased I went.

I've been wanting to visit the dungeons for years and on a recent trip to York to celebrate our anniversary we thought this was the perfect opportunity. We were quite apprehensive as we knew it was an interactive experience normally so wondered if the covid restrictions would ruin the experience- they certainly didn't. The actors are brilliant. They stayed in character the whole time and engaged with each audience member whilst maintaining social distancing and ensuring we were all kept safe. There are markers on the floor so you know where to stand and hand sanitiser stations throughout. To be honest, I would struggle to pick a favourite room as they were all brilliant but the torture room was very good and brilliantly funny- I was pleased not to be chosen as the participant though! I think there are nine rooms in total which are all different and you learn about a different time in history in each one. Myself and my partner are fans of horror films and anything scary so we thoroughly enjoyed this, I'm very jumpy and was on edge the entire time I was there which was just what I wanted! We have both said we would love to visit again, highly recommend!

The York Dungeon provided an entertaining insight into York's rich history. The performers were absolutely amazing at their roles. They clearly had undertaken their roles many times as they timed what they said well, remembered what they had to say and spoke in a way that was entertaining (no monotone speeches here). There is some audience participation but nothing too terrifying. There were families there with young children and the children were fine (I think it was just the adults looking nervous.

They do, do the whole take a photo thing and see if you'll buy it but there was no pressure to buy them (most of those in my group looked and them, and then continued on their merry way).

Hi Travelling_Tweet - thank you for your recent visit and review! We're delighted that you enjoyed your experience and particularly that of our 'absolutely amazing' performers - we do pride ourselves on our Actors and they are delighted to be back doing what they do best. Also, thanks for your notes about the Photos - we always see them as a nice addition and novelty to remind guests of their time in the Dungeon but you are absolutely right, there is no obligation to purchase. We may have a Torturer but we're not that forceful...! Hopefully you can return one day and who knows, we may be able to sneak that extra 5th star!
