Fun activity if in town
Jun 2021
This was my first experience of Merlin's dungeons and it was interesting, the actors all wore facemarks and it was all done well with the current restrictions.
Few people in the group were scared, they did well to get you involved - well worth a visit but I think they are all very similar to be honest.

To be fair... if you're not in town then we'd struggle to be a fun activity because you'd be nowhere near us ;) WE JEST of course... Thank you for this great 4 star review of your journey into the darkest depths of the Dungeon - and thank you for your comments regarding our safety measures during these current restrictions! Being scared, involvement & worth a visit we'll certainly take - but equally we promise you that none of those other scoundrel Dungeons have the true Guy Fawkes (heads...), Vikings, a Golden Fleece Pub or a Witch quite like Isabella Billington! (maybe we'll let them have a Torturer & Plague Doctor for now!) Visit again one day in the future... and we promise we (or maybe a certain Dick...) may well be able to steal back that 5th STAR!

Just amazing
Jun 2021 • Couples
My second visit here, COVID safe, felt very comfortable, absolutely fantastic, hilarious and informative as always. There was a young child on our tour who was quite scared so not sure if I'd recommend for very young children, but me and my partner laughed the whole way round, bought the fab pictures that were taken and have recommended already to so many friends. Really engaging and interesting, can't wait to come back after COVID (they said would be adding more scenes then).

Just AMAZING review! Thank you for all these very kind words about such a HORRIBLE place such as the Dungeon! A review that lists: Amazing Covid Safe Comfortable Fantastic Hilarious Informative Engaging Interesting Seems like an excellent visit to us...! Thank you for this epic 5 star review & account - we will certainly pass on your kind words to our team including those pesky fab photo takers! See you again one day... IF YOU DARE?!

Disappointing
Jun 2021 • Couples
Expectations were perhaps slightly high on my part as have been to the London Dungeons many times and was very excited to visit the attraction in York. Actors were generally engaging and funny but didn't feel particularly immersive, was a bit predictable and not very scary.

A disappointing visit for you, a disappointing review for us...! Sorry to hear that we didn't quite hit the mark on this most recent visit of yours... we at the Dungeon aim to thoroughly immerse all our guests through 2000 years of York's darkest & most horrible history. We typically receive very positive feedback on our SCARY FUN experience even during these current difficult & ever-changing times with our Covid-19 limitations and safe & secure safety measures. Thank you for your kind words on our engaging & funny actors, we'll pass on your regards! We're constantly switching up and developing our experience & product so do visit us again one day and we'll see if we can raise those expectations again... who knows maybe we might soon have some surprises up our sleeve to challenge those London softy Southern folk for that top Dungeon crown!

Out of the last 4 reviews... we've now had TWO scaredycats! Whatever next! We're delighted that you survived being thrust head-first into the darkest depths of the Dungeon and lived to tell the tale. And what a wonderful tale that is it - one of those 5 star Trip Advisor tales indeed. Thank you for your excellent review of your experience (even if you did have to use a vulcan death grip through the Dungeon!). Do you dare visit again... this time perhaps for our EVEN DARKER, SCARIER & ADULTIER Dungeon 18+ Lates nights?!

Education...!? From a Dungeon!? Whatever next....!? But yes you are indeed very correct, discovering 2000 year's of York's gruesome and grisly past & murky histories can indeed be very informative (and very very entertaining!) Thank you for your awesome 5 star review & comments on your visit - York can absolutely be great for eating, drinking & walking... but it can be even better for Dungeon-ing (does that work? probably not, but we've gone for it now...) Hopefully see you again in the Dungeon one day... IF YOU DARE?!

Amazing

Fantastic experience! If you are visiting York then the dungeons are a must. Every member of staff was brilliant and played their part perfectly. We didn’t have a favourite but a special mention to the nurse and witch who were absolutely amazing. All members of staff get you involved in every scene which makes the experience that much more entertaining. Dealt with Covid brilliantly throughout the whole time we were there. Can’t stress enough how amazing this is and definitely worth every penny.

Uggggghhhhh, this beautifully enthusiastic & charming review has melted even our blackest, darkest Dungeon hearts... Thank you for your excellent comments & recommendations - we really do love what we do in the Dungeon and we're so happy that you've seen that - from our safe & secure covid-19 safety measures, to our passionate and committed team of staff & actors! You'll have to return again one day... perhaps to take on our City Walking Tour and/or Dungeon 18+ Lates evenings... IF YOU DARE?! p.s. we feel like you more than likely mean our Plague Doctor show when you specially mention our 'nurse' but it's a new description of the show to us.. and we can't help but think this may have been some other kind of show you were watching... ;)

I’m a big scaredy cat!
May 2021 • Couples
It was really fun, the staff are lovely and the actors are really good!
Most of it had a big comedy value, however I am scared of everything so I was the ideal customer!
Would definitely recommend.

The Dungeon & Scaredy Cats... the perfect combination! You were indeed an ideal customer! Thank you for you feedback from your visit, a 'definitely recommend' sounds good to us - let us know next time what we can do to steal that 5th star! We'll pass your kind words on our actors & wider staff!

Dungeon Lates - avoid
Jun 2021
Me and my girlfriend booked the Dungeon Lates tour hoping for something a little different. I've previously visited the dungeons at Warwick Castle and London and absolutely loved it each time, so i was hoping for a more intense and cruder experience.
However, apart from chatting to the person who greeted us at the door and at the end in the shop (same person), we were left quite dissapointed. The only difference between this tour and a normal tour is that you get a small cup of alcohol halfway through. It seemed quite a quick dungeon tour too, although i'm guessing Covid doesn't help this! The actors were, as always, really good, but i was struggling to see how it was any more 'adult' than normal. The last room in the Dungeon was very good.
If you're thinking of booking the 'Dungeon Lates', avoid it and just book a normal tour and go for a beer after - there are plenty of pubs/bars nearby.

Hi Nick! Thank you for your recent review of our York Dungeon 18+ Lates - it's always great to receive all feedback whether positive (which we do fortunately receive often) or constructive (to give us the chance to develop and improve our offering to all our guests/peasants!) With respect to the changes for our 18+ Tours - all our evening shows throughout the Dungeon do have edits in them to give them the ADULTIER, NAUGHIER & DARKER feel (some admittedly with larger changes than others!) For example, our Witch show (the last room noted on your review) as agreed is probably quite scary & dark enough already! Our evening tours do also introduce both the drink in our Ghost (Golden Fleece) Show, and also a full NEW show which is our two-hander WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS show (where our Judge & Barrister go toe-toe). For both of these, rest assured, you would certainly not see in the day tours! Sorry to hear of your slight disappointment with the overall Tour (we do still feel like the 'avoid' is a little strong!) but we can appreciate that you as a Dungeon expert having conquered Warwick & London, and also with the current minor Covid-limitations & changes may not have been fully satisfied! However, rest assured, we will be continuing to review & develop our Lates 18+ offering as we return to a semblance of normality so we shall certainly take your feedback onboard moving forward! Finally, thank you your kind words about our staff & actors, we shall pass this on the wider team! p.s. we do 100% agree about plenty of pubs/bars in York! There's in fact one for every day of the year!!

Mort Disabled and Autistic friendly attraction we have ever visited. Would give higher than 5 stars if I could.
Jun 2021 • Family
Having been Merlin Pass holders for years and primarily use them to visit Theme Parks and Blackpool attractions, due to being on holiday in North Yorkshire I felt it was about time we tried the Dungeons.

We have over the years attempted to to to other Dungeons but with an Autistic daughter and me not much braver as well as me being disabled using a mobility scooter- well we've never even got as far as the ticket booth before a meltdown.

Prior to our holiday I emailed York Dungeons and laid our situation out completely. Would it be too much for Autistic persons, could I use my scooter. Did they have autistic friendly timings etc etc etc.

Each time I emailed they were very positive with their responses. Whilst they don't have tailored tours for autism they can and do issue glow in the dark stickers to alert the actors that you do not wish to participate or be approached. Whilst it wasn't possible for me to take my scooter around the attraction, they had wheelchairs and on both sets of stairs there was a stair lift. They even kindly stored my scooter safely for me for the duration.

Our tour was booked for 16:45 but as we obviously needed to get all our bits in place, ie stickers, wheel chair, Georgia's ear defenders etc etc etc we were asked if we could arrive 15 mins early and as we are still dealing with Covid, the filling in of Track and Trace too.

Everything was explained clearly and assured that under no circumstances would the actors approach us. But also if at ANY time it was felt that we needed to leave the tour early this would not be a problem and we could be evacuated immediately.

Anxiety was brimming for Georgia, we entered the first room and straight away each group on the tour (mainly couples apart from us as a 3) were directed to stand on a safe distance spot on the floor. There were hand sanitizer stations frequently along the tour and everything was well spaced out. Rooms that had benches had spots to sit on again well spaced. Every actor had a face mask. From a scared point of view I think I benefited from attending during all the Covud measures as the Actors didn't get close to anybody (phew!).

Each room had a different part of history to tell, the actors were fantastic. Several laughs along the way and many parts to make you jump. Nothing that necessitated us to leave.

In fact when we reached the gift shop at the end of the tour we could quite happily have carried on. Georgia instantly announced that she really enjoyed it. Wished she hadn't been so scared of the unknown before and now that she knows what to expect, will be more than happy to visit all the other Dungeons Merlin own across the country.

My scooter was safely returned to me and for the rest if the evening Georgia spoke excitedly about each room and what had happened in each. She even loved her Dad being found extremely guilty of a heinous crime and having to stand in the Dock.

All that's left for me to say is a huge THANK YOU to everybody at York Dungeons for making our trip possible. If every attraction was as attentive as they were disabled people would never have a worry again.

Thank you and no doubt we will be back in the future.

It's reviews like the above that really do prove to us that we LOVE what we do! Being the Dungeon we're used the delving into dark, murky and horrible stories of York's past, but every now and again, some light does creep into our black hearts! Thank you for this phenomenal review and your comments regarding your full experience with us here at the Dungeon from our initial email correspondences, to the support & advice from our Admissions desk, to the thrills & enjoyment of the experience itself! Thanks for your kind words on the accessibility and disability-friendly side to our attraction - we won't lie, we're never the easiest of attractions to fully navigate or to explain to guests what to expect (due to the dark, surprising and twisting nature to a Dungeon) however, we will always do everything in our power to ensure that all guests enjoy (and also suitably don't enjoy!) visiting the darkest depths of the York Dungeon. We thank you once again, and have passed on your superb feedback & comments onto our wider team! We hope to see you again one day!
