Visited to see the Richard lll exhibition recently. We love museums but were very disappointed by this one. As York has several museums, you'd think they would have a pass or ticket for them all to help spread the cost. We weren't there more than an hour and had paid £8 each so felt rather hard done by. We would have liked to visit the Castle Museum too but that would have been £13 each so gave it a miss.
Compared to Hull, where the museums are free, we don't think we'll be returning.

Thank you for your feedback. As a charity, we are always working to offer visitors the best value for money and recently introduced individual tickets that last 12 months, offering better value for money. With the ticket you purchased for the Yorkshire Museum, you can visit as many times as you like within a year .We hope you might consider returning to the Yorkshire Museum in the spring when we reopen with new exhibitions of exciting Roman bronzes.

This museum is very child friendly We were really impressed with all the hands on activities for young children. Our children loved digging for fossils. They loved the fossil hunting section the dinosaur exhibit. They spent a long time playing with the castle and figures. They also loved running around the gardens and getting an ice cream Can highly recommend if you have young children.

Pre Booked tickets for the museum
Was allowed in 1 hour earlier.
A great afternoon exploring the exhibition which had some great historical interest.
The remaining exhibits are very informative and worthy of the admission price.
Very friendly staff.
Wheelchair friendly with access and lifts .

Definitely recommend to pass 1-2 hrs

Hi there, thank you for your feedback! I'm sorry you were disappointed by our Jurassic World exhibition. The admission charge allows us to maintain our excellent collection (second only to the British Museum) and our facilities. Your tickets are good for a full year, so you can come back as many times as you like during that time. We think it is quite good value!

The Yorkshire Museum is a great museum in Museum Gardens that's always well worth visiting.
On my recent weeks I
holiday in York I never ventured in ,not sure wether it was open but I have been before on a couple of occasions ,it's a fascinating museum with five permanent collections ranging from biology, geology, archaeology ,numismatics and astronomy .
Founded by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society and housed in a magnificent museum building constructed from designs from architect William Wilkins ,a Grade I listed building, I love the look of this building,Greek Revival style architecture is so pleasing on the eye ,opened in 1830 ,it's the longest established museum in England ,I love walking around Museum Gardens and buildings such as Yorkshire Museum add to the joy of walking around this pretty park area ,on my next trip to York I certainly will be visiting Yorkshire Museum ,it's most definitely well worth checking out if you're planning on visiting Museum Gardens.

There will be the Jurassic, Medieval and Roman exhibitions as well as some rare Roman bronzes and ancient headdresses from a Mesolithic site in North Yorkshire. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

I was really impressed with all the hands on activities for little people in each of the exhibits. Both my under 5’s had a ‘Dinosaur Back Pack’ from the front desk, which came with cuddly dinosaur toy which they both enjoyed ‘showing around the museum’. They loved the fossil hunting section the Jurassic exhibit. They spent a long time playing with the dress up and castle with figures in the Richard III exhibit. All theses extras were well thought out with books and other activities. Can highly recommend.

We love this museum and every time we come to York it is a "must do" - this time was no exception.

We loved the opportunity to see the Ryedale Hoard but we were a little disappointed that, because of space, it meant that the Roman "characters" were not appearing as we find it fascinating the way the fiction links in with the actual human remains. On the hand, it was, as ever, lovely to see the medieval area - especially the Middleham jewel.

There did seem to be quite a few problems in the Jurassic World area which didn't have a big impact on us but might have been disappointing for some families.

This is well worth a visit and is set in a lovely location within the Museum Gardens with one area actually looking out towards the abbey ruins.

We are so glad you hear how much you love the museum! We were sorry to say goodbye to the Roman characters, but the chance to display the Ryedale Hoard is a really incredible one - we hope the bring the characters back in the future! Thanks so much for your feedback - it has been passed on to the team.

We often go here when visiting my Mum in York. It's full of interest and the staff are amazing and will happily find the time to answer questions. On our last visit we spent 15 minutes talking to one guide (an archeology student) about her passion for archeology and the discoveries not only in the museum but that she had been involved with.

The York helmet is worth paying the entrance fee alone... real history. And look out for the anglo Saxon bracelet that a builder found and popped in his underwear drawer, thinking it was just bent out of shape metal, only for his family to discover it when clearing out his house after his death.

Be prepared to ask questions and it will be a great experience.

There is currently a special exhibition on the Ryedale Hoard in the main entryway to the museum which has a few interesting items. However, don't spend too long reading the walls of text contexualising these objects because by far the most interesting objects are in the permanent collection. For me, the stand out items were: the four seasons Roman mosaic which was huge and almost complete; and the Anglo Saxon helmet which was incredible and in such good condition for something over 1000 years old, I've never seen anything quite like it anywhere else. The permanent collection was well curated and with a good balance of explanatory text to objects.
