A museum based on streets showing life through the ages, well worth a visit on rainy Yorkshire day as it is all indoors. I would recommend looking for online vouchers and book in advance as it is quite pricey for a visit which takes around 2 hours. The price is the only reason for the 4 star review.
Hi there, Thanks so much for leaving us this review. We are pleased that you had an enjoyable visit! The tickets are priced as such because we are a charity and rely on ticket incomes to help us care for our collections. Also all tickets are valid for 12 months, and can be used an unlimited amount of times for the full 12 months!

This was actually our second choice tourist destination in York, after the Jorvic Centre, but we ended up here after we discovered you’re unable to buy tickets at the Jorvic Centre on the day (it’s pre-bookings only). As it turned out however, we both agreed that the York Castle Museum was the better choice for us and were glad we didn’t go the Jorvic Centre after all! We found York Castle Museum fascinating, with its amazing range of exhibits, glimpses into the past and the most interesting parts for us, the recreation Victorian street and 1960s street. The former came complete with original shop fronts and - in some - real life shop owners ‘selling’ their wares. Our visit was further enhanced by the fact that it wasn’t busy - although there was a school group visiting - meaning we were able to take our time and really take in all the exhibits and information about them. We only had one slight disappointment during our visit in that the costume exhibit wasn’t open. I would have loved to have seen the period clothing but in fairness to the museum, the staff tell you at the entrance which exhibits are closed, so you can easily choose whether to still visit or not. We spent upwards of 2 hours here and agreed it was worth every penny of the £19.50 entry fee. We stopped at the café for refreshments afterwards which was also an excellent choice. All the staff we encountered were friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable and we left feeling like we’d had a very engaging, interesting and worthwhile visit.

The York Castle Museum, located in the historic city of York in England, was a major highlight of my trip. Entering a museum feels like crossing a time tunnel and returning to the mysterious and legendary era of the Middle Ages. The museum houses a large collection of historical relics and artworks, from ancient armor to exquisite pottery, from ancient weapons to precious documents, each exhibit tells the history and culture of the ancient city of York. Strolling through the various exhibition halls of the museum, I felt as if I was immersed in a historical feast, experiencing the lifestyle and spiritual outlook of the people of that era. Especially the exhibitions about York Castle gave me a deeper understanding of the defense system and military history of this ancient city. I bought a railcard on trainpal and got a 20% discount when I entered the RC777E code! Hope to help those who come to the UK to play~ In addition, the museum also provides rich interactive experiences, allowing me to personally participate in history and experience the atmosphere of that era. This visit not only broadened my horizons, but also filled me with respect and longing for the historic city of York.

Spent a full day here yesterday and it was great! There is so much to explore and the museum is well set out. There are lots of interactive areas for children and adults to enjoy. We completed the first side in the morning and then had taken a picnic so sat outside the museum for lunch before returning to do the second half. The old York Fellows cells had to be the best bit with the interactive projections of historical figures who spent years in the cells. Tickets are valid for 12months and I would recommend pre booking tickets as this gave us priory entry. In the second half there are a couple of quiet rooms from anyone travelling with adults/children who have sensory needs. These rooms have blankets and sensory toys . A great addition for anyone with SEN needs who need to regulate.

One of the gems of York is the York Castle Museum. The historical rooms and Victorian Street were delightful, featuring many hidden gems within their heart. While the staff were friendly, some of them seemed a bit misinformed about how long it would take to explore the museum. For example, when one staff member was asked how much time was needed for a visit, they replied, "Oh, about an hour." Unfortunately, this was a disservice to the potential visitors of the York Castle Museum. On the whole, it is worthy of a visit, a truly visual treat and worth the entrance fee.

Although not about castles the experience we got from the museum was awesome. It digs deep into our social history providing a great insight in our development from the 1500s to present day. Although not about castles we were very impressed and the museum covers a range of things from its collection of social history artifacts to the prison within which the building was. A very fun trip. Shame some of the video displays didn’t work and although a bit steep you can come back anytime within the following 12 months free of charge, we’ll worth a visit.

We popped into the museum this afternoon thinking we’d have time to visit Clifford’s tower afterwards. There was so much to see though that we stayed until closing! It’s absolutely huge and jam packed with interesting oddities. The street exhibit is so beautifully displayed, it really gives the impression it’s someone’s fantastic passion project. I can’t imagine how much work goes into maintaining a collection this size. The prison exhibit was spooky and creepy but really interesting. The area of the museum dedicated to Yorks part in the Great War and WW2 was so interesting. And my personal favourite exhibits were the 60s exhibit and the fashion exhibit. I can’t recommend this museum enough, great value as it’s deceptively large.

We visited today on a spur of the moment decision, entering about 3 hours before the posted closing time and got straight in with very little queuing time. Straight into the social history exhibits, we found the time line of fashion and clothing really interesting. The "Period Rooms/Exhibitions" are ways intriguing as you imagine yourself in the various settings....even had a bit of a laugh as we recognised items in the more recent history... Good old nans house!! The "living street" part of the museum was brilliant as was Saint Nick who we met there, who led us on a journey "this is your life" style. The War exhibitions were very poignant and well presented and finally the prison element was really well done. Overall spent 2 hours here without really rushing around, well worth the price of the ticket.

I think this is one of the best museums I have been to. The Victorian street was excellent and really well laid out, while the WW1 exhibition gave a good insight in to what life must have been like during these times. Probably because of our age, both of us loved the 60's exhibition, which brought back some memories of growing up in this time. I would recommend visiting here whether you are young or old
Thank you very much for your kind words. We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed you visit to us and the range of displays we offer. Do make the most of your annual ticket and pop back to visit us again another time!

I wish to see the Gilligan carousel ride as I am researching Halsteads who made it. You cannot contact them by phone. They have not replied to two answering system queries nor an email. 90 miles and a steep entance fee is too much of a gamble just to be told that Toy Stories is closed. If the ceilng really is dangerous, has this carousel, which is both very rare and extremely valuable, been removed to a place of safety? As they know the problem exists and if they have done nothing to make it safe, the insurance could be invalid.

This was a return visit, I came as a child on a school visit in the 70s, then again with my family in the 90s and my last visit with just my wife and I.
Once again, we arrived when upgrading work was bring carried out, and some of the exhibits were looking tired. Some of the displays down stairs I thought didn't make any sense however, The victorian Street is still amazing, and we really enjoyed the 60s exhibits; it makes us feel old looking at our toys in a museum! LOL. The coffee shop is basic but thankfully not overpriced. We thought the entrance price was steep, with no reductions for 60-65 year olds or veterans. Overall, another enjoyable visit spolit by basic displays and too expensive.

Have visited this museum many times as a child and with my children and enjoyed every part of it spending hours at a time, on this occasion i went with my daughter who also loved the museum and my Grandchildren who were visiting for the first time, both of them extremely excited as we had given them an insight to what they were going to see. We had a 4hr journey to get there encountering 25mins road works on the way, struggled to park on a very tight car park not designed for the size of modern day cars and then were shocked to find we had to pay £17 to park there!!!. When entering the museum we were told part of it was closed and no reduction in our ticket🤨as we moved around the museum it became clear that apart from the main st nothing was the same as my many previous visits. Toys and body shaping closed, gone were the wedding dresses etc that i had told my Grandaughter she would see,(one very disappointed Grandaughter)gone were the 70s and 80s rooms that i had promised they would see what life was like when i was a child there are now just a few room settings from earlier times .WW1 consisting of quite a few rooms the first ones with just pictures on the walls, then a few uniforms, the only part the children enjoyed was the trenches. A room covered in blackboards to write thoughts on the war, surely a small space is enough , a complete waste of a room!!!! Through the prisons and we then realised we were finished. So very disappointed, not at all worth the money we had paid , not just for the lack of content but also to pay full when part of it was not available for us to see. Used to be so interesting such a shame so much has gone. Needless to say that is our last visit after many years for all of us.

Hi there, Thank you very much for your feedback, we do really appreciate all the comments you have made. In terms of the car park, this is owned by City of York Council and no association with the museum itself. We are sorry that part of the museum was closed upon your visit, we are still trying to repair the RAAC that was found in the ceiling. We are working to get this reopened as quickly and as safely as possible. This is where the fashion galleries, toys and 50s and 80s period rooms are usually. The wedding dresses have been off display for several years now as we have altered the fashion displays over the years. Your tickets are valid for 12 months for unlimited revisits, so you can come back as many times as you like for no extra cost. We are also a charity, so we do rely on ticket incomes to care for our collections and keep the history for future generations. We are sorry you did not enjoy your visit to us, we thank you for your support over previous years.

My wife visited the York Castle Museum when she was a young girl and wanted to take a trip down memory lane. We booked the first available time slot which was 10am. Once the doors had opened, we explored the Victorian street and chatted with a number of the 'residents' of the street. They were very informative and gave us some great info about the shops etc in the street. The cafe was a nice place to stop for a quick drink before heading into the 1st World War and the 1960's
Overall, it takes about 90 minutes to go through all of the exhibits. Our only negative (and it is a tiny negative) is that the sweetshop doesn't open until 11am which caused large queues outside the door.

Wow just wow….the Victorian street is incredible, it did feel like we had stepped back in time. The shop fronts are incredible and the characters really make it feel incredibly authentic.
We happened to visit, as a local primary school were arriving…..the children were incredibly well behaved and made the performance of a Christmas Carol very special- they joined in and played their parts with gusto! Scrooge was absolutely brilliant- his storytelling skills kept us all hanging on his every word.
The rest of the museum is just as wonderful, we will definitely recommend to friends and family and will come back in the summer to experience in a different season!

Great place to visit

I tried to visit today with my 15 month old granddaughter who was sleeping in her pushchair only to be told I couldn't take the pushchair into the museum. I was offered a baby carrier and somewhere to put the pushchair. Apart from the fact she was sleeping I really don't know how the staff expected me to carry her around the museum all day . She is not fully mobile yet and as a Grandma she is too heavy for me to carry even in a carrier. Staff told me it clearly states on their website that pushchairs aren't allowed, well I did find this information but not easily. I thought this museum was family friendly but obviously not. Very disappointing.

Loved visiting this museum, mainly for the prison and the experience of walking through the made-up street with the old shop fronts, sounds and smells! The other parts are a bit hit and miss, depends what you're interested in. The main downfall was the entrance into the museum. We had pre-booked tickets which was meant to 'avoid the queue' but once the doors opened it was flooded with people and no staff to ask whether there were any separate queues for pre-booked tickets. We waisted quite a lot of time in one huge queue where tourist groups were having to process several individual bookings.

I can't believe we paid over £34 to see little more than a recreated victorian street, which took no more thsn an hour. We have visitrd the transport museum in Glasgow, which is FREE and boasts much more exhibits as well as a recreated victorian street. We feel cheated. York is expensive, but this was ridiculous...the Jorvik centre, howrver, is much better value and fun and informative. The cafe was also very poor.

Before visiting York, I found this museum on Trip Advisor, along with plenty of other tourist attractions in York.

Whilst waiting to enter before the official opening time, I took the opportunity to purchase tickets online, as this was a cheaper option. On entry all we had to do was show the staff member our tickets, which were sent to us by email, & they last a year!

This museum is set in a old jail, & every aspect of the museum has been thought through in detail. There is something for all ages to learn.

I would definitely suggest taking at least 3 hours plus, as it’s a massive place. The museum is broken up into two sides, with a café in between to stop for refreshments.

My only criticism would be, during our visit we brought our young child & wanted to use one of the baby carriers. The staff were unable to show us how to use them, & there were no instructions, maybe it wouldn’t go a miss, to provide instructions for the public or at least help, because putting it on wrong, is more of a risk!

We have visited the museum before and really enjoyed it, but be warned less half of the exhibits are open due to it undergoing some repairs. They are charging £7 per adult instead of the usual £14 but you can have your ticket personalised so you can get a reduction in price if you return within 12 months.

The man on the entrance desk was very pushy in trying to extract our personal information so they could claim back the tax and personalise our ticket and openly showed his disappointment when we declined to hand over our details.

The only exhibits that are currently open at the museum are the WW1 display, the jail cells and part of the 1960s display, so it takes about 40 minutes to walk around if you take your time and it's really not worth the £7 entrance fee.

The museum, when fully open is well worth a visit, but I would hold off until after the repairs are completed.

Hi there, Thank you for your review, we understand that this closure isn't ideal and we do apologise for any inconvenience caused. The reduced ticket price is still an annual pass, so we hope you will make a return visit once we have fully re-opened. In order to make the tickets annual passes, We have to take at least a name and email address. But you do not have to do this or provide other details for giftaid and therefore apologise if at any point you were made to feel uncomfortable. I will pass your feedback on.
