FREE FUN IN YORK... aka The Fabulous York Cat Trail provides both visitors and locals with the opportunity to find and photo the numerous statues of cats which are on York's old buildings. These were put there to frighten away rats and mice. The statues were also thought to ward off wandering evil spirits and to bestow good luck and good health on people. Enjoy the trail... it's FREE! You are warmly invited to download it from our website, or to pick it up from our Shambles based shop

We enjoyed the hunt and it took us away from our usual haunts in York. The map could have been a little clearer as the children found it quite frustrating when they couldn't find the cats but then again, it was free, so you can't complain. We noticed a few other families peering at their maps and there was a... More

There seem to be 2 cat trails rather than one, one leaflet guide available from the glass shop in the shambles and the other from the cat shop in low petergate. I followed the former and there appears very little in it. The trail shows you parts of York you may be unfamiliar with and is great if you like... More

I did this walk with my two boys both under three and my nephews 8 and 11 and my parents so we only did the short pedestrian route. Picked up the leaflet and off we went. The route was easy and doable with a pushchair. The clues were good and could be easily followed by the older boys. The younger... More

Had quite a bit of fun looking for the cats. Took nearly 3 hrs but nice to see the city. Some were a bit tricky to find. I think I took as many cat photos as anything else in the city. Though it would be fun with a few people, even as a lone traveller enjoyed the tour.

Walking through or around (walking on the walls was our favorite) York is fun on its own, but if you like treasure hunts and searches, be sure to pick up a Cat Trail map. We found the map at the TI office. There are 20+ cat sculptures lurking above your head around the city, most of them on the sides... More

We picked this map up from the glass shop in the shambles showing a trail around the centre of York like a treasure hunt to find all the little cats - sculptures etc. My friend and I hadn't spotted any until we knew they were there to look for although we had walked around most of York by the time... The york cat walk is a one of those best kept secrets. Basically, models of cats are present on buildings across the city and the walk leads you around hinting about where to spot them. A guide can be picked up from the York Glass shop front on the Shambles. The first 9 are very close around the shambles, and... More

I've been to York many times but never knew there was a cat trail! Luckily there was a leaflet about it in our apartment. It's a brilliant way to walk along streets you may not normally venture down and looking for the cats was more fun than I thought. Really enjoyed it

We picked up a leaflet for the Cat Trail at our B&B, our 6 year old daughter is animal mad so we thought we could do this for a bit of fun...plus children get a prize if they answer all the questions correctly. That was it, we were off down the street - on a cat mission! Following clue by... More
