Experience the threat of nuclear war at York Cold War Bunker! On a fascinating guided tour, learn how volunteers would have played a vital role in ensuring that Britain could survive a nuclear attack. The atmospheric 1960s semi-subterranean bunker is just as it was when stood down in 1991, and the one hour guided tour is enhanced by a short film. Summer opening (25th March - October 31st): Wednesday - Sunday, plus bank holidays, between 10am and 6pm. Entrance by guided tour only, at the following times: 10:00, 11:15. 11:45, 13:00, 14:15, 15:30, 16:45.

This is the only fully intact cold war bunker remaining which makes for a unique experience. Jake, our guide is very knowledgable and personable. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I have a big interest in the Cold War, and have visited Hack Green bunker, so really enjoyed every second of this. The tour guide (jake?) was incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The bunker is a little out of the way in the middle of a residential cul de sac, and not super easy to find. I walked from the city... More

Definitely worth the trip just outside the city centre. This is a unique look into how Britain prepared for a possible nuclear attack. Visit is by guided tour and the guide was great and enthusiastic. It's walkable from the city centre but you can also get the number one bus.

Our group visited the York Cold War Bunker and were very impressed by the guided tour we had. Handily situated nor far from the city centre in a cul de sac near to Acomb the Bunker was staffed by Royal Observer Corp volunteers during the Cold War from the early 1960's for 30 years. They endured spartan conditions there. A... More

This was our first stop on a recent visit to York. The bunker is located perhaps a mile or two from the town centre and a pleasant walk on a nice day. The site is owned by English Heritage and access is provided only by attendance at the time of advertised tours. There seemed to be little nearby which might... More

When on holiday in York we decided to try out some new museums and the cold war bunker peaked our interest after being to the Secret Bunker in Fife a couple of times. Little did we know how professional and cool the experience would be! Instantly the staff member, our tour guide, was friendly, inviting and forward giving us a... More

We took the bus from close to the tourist information, they will give you the bus number, visits are by guided tour only at selected times so ring ahead if time is tight, there is a cafe down the road if you have to wait, tour itself was great interesting and a great narrative given by the guide she really... Fascinating and frightening in equal measure. Many thanks to Jake, our guide, for his knowledge, enthusiasm and humour. Can't recommend highly enough. Add it to your Bucket List.
