Shopping for buttons
Sep 2021
If you need buttons this is the place for you every conceivable colour size and shape you could wish for. Friendly staff and of course they fully stock most haberdashery items. Friendly and helpful. Was recommended by Sewcialising a craft shop in York which I found to be helpful and professional in their recommendation of a competitor.

Extraordinary store, extraordinary content!
Jan 2020
Firstly one is compelled to enter this delightful store because of its mediaeval exterior that transfers inside to beams and nooks and crannies that comprise a crafts-person's dreamland of colour and texture. Every possible kind of button in every possible material and shape, together with products and kits and ribbons that not only meet the maddest needle-crafter's crazy desire, but also provide perfect teeny gifts for friends and family, even if they don't sew! And then you discover that they hold workshops here - for everyone from the least experienced 'beginner' knitter to exquisite heritage stitching for those more demanding crafters. The fact that this is a family-owned business is apparent in the warmth of the team and the care with which they attend to even the smallest transaction. What a find. Lucky I don't live in York or I'd be moving in.

Not only is the store a stunning medieval building with gorgeous exposed beams and cosy spaces, the store offers an unrivalled collection of buttons, needlecrafts, ribbons and craft kits. There are so many gift options for all ages so I managed to find christmas gifts for my kids and all te family. The staff were really helpful - they even found the perfect match for a missing button on my suit. I highly recommend a visit!

An absolutely joy whether you are a sewing enthusiast or not

This is the kind of shop that inspired JK Rowling to create Diagon Alley. As soon as you walk in to this gorgeous 15th century building - which in itself is a joy to see with its beautiful fixtures and fittings - you're assailed by a sea of colour - the literally thousands or ribbons, and buttons. The staff are delightful - really knowledgeable and all obvious enthusiasts for many of the crafts that this shops supplies, whether its lovely locally 'grown' Yorkshire wool, and antique buttons, or lovely sewing kits - including one they commissioned of the shop. As someone who is passionate about sewing and stitching I felt like a child in a sweetie shop - I even sent photos to fellow enthusiasts. and even if you dont sew - lovely place for little gifts - I bought 2 very cute little 'starter' tapestries for my great nieces, and just a joy to visit for anyone who enjoys history, colour and a taste of another era. Well done Duttons - keep up the great work.
