Passive Aggressive Owner and Lack of Proper Communication
Dec 2018
Update: Just realised that the guitar tech glued a piece of plastic to the saddle and didn't mention it to me at all. Poor customer service. And they've been removing the photos I've attached alongside with the post to cover their poor workmanship! Please, if you value your guitars, don't take them here. I sent my Martin 000x1 guitar for a refret job to MOR Music after reading about some of the good reviews from facebook. I gave the guitar in on December 17th and received it today January 22nd 2019. One of the shop attendants mentioned that it would take about 2 weeks or more (since it was nearing Christmas and New Years) and I was initially alright with it, paid for the service upfront and handed the guitar over to them. The good 1. After much inspection, nothing. The Cons 1. Cosmetics issues (see pictures) whereby there is an obvious discolouration to the finish that was not there before. I'm not sure if this was due to the guitar being clamped or if something was spilled on top of it but its pretty obvious if one takes a look at the pictures. Another issue was at where the neck joined with the body. For some reason there seems to be so glittery residue (see picture) on it. Its a minor detail but I can't overlook it. But the attention and care giving at this part was done poorly and seems like a a rush job. Am not too happy with this. 2. Some of the frets had some poor workmanship on them as you could still see the glue fairly clearly on the fretboard. Also after fixing the saddle, the string action became a little too low and buzzing became apparently when I played a few licks from 11 fret and above but I didn't want to spend any more money on the shop cause from their expressions, it seems like they were sick of dealing with me too. 3. Communication wise, it was very hard to feel assured as a customer that my request was being carried out. I understand that MOR music would probably have other guitar jobs that also needs to be done but probably a specific date of completion which both parties could agree on would be better instead of an arbitrary "oh it'll take 2 weeks or more". 4. I initially prepared a set of Elixir strings for the guitar to be strung with after the refretting job was done but MOR Music only works with the strings they're selling (which I can't remember what is was) so that was a small annoyance. 5. They glued a plastic shim on my saddle to compensate for the lack of height. Without informing me or anything. If you want to do any changes, it's best to inform your customer's prior! Usually I would feel ecstatic about receiving my guitar back but this time round I just feel relieved. This might not be the case with anyone else who has dealt with them but this is just my experience. I do not recommend going here. TL/DR Sent in guitar 17 Dec 2018 for refret, paid upfront too, after 4 weeks no news of it so decided to send an email and they said they were working on it. Got it back 22nd January 2019. The guitar plays fine BUT STILL HAS FRET BUZZ ISSUES and the issue with them putting on a plastic shim under the saddle without informing me is absolutely ridiculous. MORMusic, it took you more than 3 months to respond regarding the botched refret job you did and yet you managed to find a way to make your reply both passive-aggressive and condescending at the same time. I don't know if you treat your other customers the same or if you've finally cleaned up your act after suddenly removing the 'recommend' feature from your Facebook page, but it doesn't deny the fact that your team will never admit to committing a fault and with such a rude gusto to add. I don't want to linger too much on this but this isn't how a business should be run. You need to stop lying to people and start treating everyone with equal respect, and also cut out your nonsense and the insincere attitude. That is all.

Faith guitar setup
Apr 2020 • Business
Sent my faith mercury in for a setup. It had brand new strings on that had plenty of excess string wound yet they said they couldn't save them. The setup was supposed to include a clean but was still quite dirty. The worst thing was a modification to the bridge on the high e. They took a groove out with a router and made a right mess. I messaged them and they offered to try and do something with it but short of a new bridge I declined the offer. The setup wasn't bad although the action was quite high, but after a week or so I don't know if the neck settled after truss rod adjustment but I'm now getting fret buzz. Never again and over £50, a new bridge is going to cost me about that as well.

Good guitar sale, invisible customer service
Jun 2018 • Solo
I sold a guitar through Mor Music. The great thing is that they sold it very well and I have no complaints in that regard. The problem is that they don't communicate with you when the guitar is sold, how much they've sold it for and when your payment is due. As a result, I had to contact Mor Music to establish that the guitar had been sold, that they had had to take more time to guarantee that the redwood had been properly sourced for US customs, and finally to get my payment. I visited the shop and phoned, and was told I'd be paid in June and that I'd receive an email to that effect. Only after a further trip to the shop on the last day of June did I receive an assurance that the cheque (yes, the cheque, so a trip to the bank was required on top of this) would be with me in the coming week. It finally arrived although I still have no idea how much the instrument actually sold for. So, great for selling guitars, but remarkably poor for communicating with customers.

Great set up

Many thanks to Phil for a top set up on my epiphone acoustic. I was worried about some fret buzz but nothing is too much trouble as the man knows what he is doing and the guitar was back with me in less than 24 hours, great service and the guitar plays like butter again.

I had problems with my Larravie guitar. l heard good things about MOR Music so travelled 60 miles to get my precious guitar sorted. The guys, knowing i had travelled a fair way, did an excellent job in double quick time and at a very reasonable price. lcan thoroughly recommend MOR Music for sales and repairs. I will certainly return.

Mor than just a music shop.. (see what I did there ;-) )
Jan 2017 • Solo
MOR Music has been in York for many years and in different locations. It's now in Franklins Yard off Fossgate (which seriously flooded over Xmas/New Year 2015.) After a massive refit and refurbish which has taken the best part of a year, they are now open again.

It appears that having to start from fresh has given the owners, Phil & Lynn, a blank canvas and they have changed a few things around. The shop has different areas for Acoustic and Electric instruments.

Phil is very knowledgeable about the products they sell, and they are both very friendly and welcoming and certainly not pushy as some shops can be.

Well worth a visit if you are in the area, especially as there are some great coffee shops nearby (Spring Espresso and the Fossgate Social to name two)

Nash S63 Strat
Mar 2016
Special thank you to Phil and Lynne for their great service when ordering my Nash Strat.

This has without doubt been the best experience purchasing a guitar - And there's been a lot!

Despite the unexpected flood damage to the shop Lynne was always happy and prompt in keeping me informed about my order and definitely went that extra mile to keep customer care the priority despite the difficult circumstances.

After all of this both Phil and Lynne delivered my guitar in person to my door! Unbelievable.

Huge thank you, I'll definitely be back soon!

A hands on guitar shop!!
Wasn't expecting to find a guitar shop in a tourist destination but soo glad I did!! Friendly staff that let me play two grands worth of fender jazz bass with no hesitation.. And straight through a decent amp!! Well informative and nothing too much trouble even tho I made it obvious that I wasn't buying, just looking... Hope their business does well cos just on customer service, they deserve it!!

Surprised there are not more reviews on here to be honest...

I absolutely love this shop, I get all the general gubbins you need as musician here and recently I bought my American Standard Jazz-Bass from them too. Great guys, great service. You can even just pop in for a nice chat!

Mor Music - Best Guitar Store - Ever!
Hi guys,

After travelling all over the UK (and most of the US) and checking out the guitar stores on my travels I think I have found my ultimate store!!!

I found the shop by chance when I was staying in York recently and went for a meal at Mason's Bistro in Fossgate - as we were enjoying our meal, I looked across and noticed a big plasma screen in the double-fronted shop showing a 1979 Fender Strat for sale - I had been looking for one of these for years!!

I finished my meal quickly and took down the opening times (9.30 - 5.30 mon-sat) and dashed back first thing in the morning to see if my dream guitar was there - it was! :o) The guys who worked there were very friendly and knowledgable and not in the slightest bit pushy ( I hate going in guitar stores and being pounced on the minute I walk in - this was the opposite, I was left to browse and they let me play the Strat (and a few others, I ended up buying 2 and a Mesa Boogie amp which I had wanted for ages) for quite a while - I think I was in the store the entire morning! My wife was happy doing the toursity thing though thankfully - The Shambles is a minutes walk away and plenty of shops.

Anyways, I ended up coming out of the store a very happy man - I found my dream guitar in absolutely fantastic condition for a nearly 30 year old guitar, an Ibanez acoustic and the Mesa Boogie. Other guitars I noticed were a really good selection of Strats (including USA) and Telecasters, Ibanez, Jackson, Hamer, Tanglewood, Marshall and Randall - they also stock those 'first guitar' kits - you know the ones that come in a box with everything you need to get started. A young guy was enquiring about one of these when I was there and they also said they do set-ups on all their guitars, even these. That is something I would recommend this store for as my friends son recently bought one of these somewhere in London and then had to spend another £40 to have it set up so he could actually play his guitar. Apparently they have a guitar technician working there so all repairs and set-ups are done in-house - another excellent point as another store I took one of my repairs to sent my guitar somewhere else to be repaired and they managed to lose it!

I have been so many guitar stores including many in the USA - I would even go as far as to say MOR Music was better that Ed Romans in Las Vegas. Fantastic selection including many gems - I left the store a very, very happy chappy! The owner of the shop, a great guy called Phil said that they were also putting a few items on Ebay soon but to contact them if there was anything in particular that I wanted as they could send have it delivered for me - wow! helpful-a-rama!

Just to finish then (as you can see I was very impressed!!) this is a store that you do not want to miss if you are going to York anytime soon, it beats the competition hands down.

Oh, by the way, there is also a drum department on the first floor which has just been refurbished...

We found the shop by chance, it is virtually straight down from The Shambles, down Fossgate which has the Army and Navy Store on one corner and a bar (YO1, I think) on the other, on the right hand side about 3 shops down next to the Bluebell pub (great traditional pub for a pint or two) and opposite Fellinis italian restaurant and Masons Bistro. Hope my directions help!!
