Fishing boats arriving with their catch, pleasure boats full of visitors, and the magnificent abbey overlooking the harbour! Well worth a visit.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 6, 2023

A simply stunning place to just watch the world go by and appreciate life in all it's glory. The sea air cleanses your spirit, washes away the worries and makes you feel glad to be alive. You won't even think about vampires, you won't notice the myth even exists.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 3, 2024
- tartnjohnOlney, United Kingdom3,550 contributionsAn active harbour with loads to see and doGreat to see a once busy harbour still with lots of activity around it, both in the water and on the surrounding harbourside. The character of the harbour must be similar to what it had been at the end of the century, probably only slightly quieter that it had been in the early 1900s although fishing will have reduced significantly. Still a real buzz about Whitby which has been lost by so many otherwise popular ports.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 17, 2024

Great boat trip and saw some dolphins, the guy was very friendly and talked to everyone individually. Plenty of places to eat and drinkVisited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten April 23, 2024

There are lots of pubs and restaurants to visit and watch the comings and goings of the harbour. The are also lots interesting shops to buy a lovely gift.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 10, 2024

We used park and ride which was great good service to the central bus station.
I used google maps to try and find our destination Humble Pie shop.
We needed to cross the harbour via the bridge.
When we arrived the bridge was open and there it stayed for approximately two and a half hours.
The guy in the middle despite hecklers wanting an update took no notice of their questions.
Apparently this is the fourth time in the last week this has happened causing delays and frustration to staff trying to get to work and to tourists stranded on either side?
Whitby council pull your finger out you are a disgrace
At worst the 1000 or more people should receive an update as to the timescale of the delay
The council should get remedial action in a more timely fashion.
The local business people should club together and sue the pants off them for business disruption

We visited Whitby on a Saturday in September, we chose to use the park & ride system as we thought that the price of a return ticket (£2.50 per person) would be cheaper for the two of us than parking in Whitby itself and also less stress than trying to find a parking spot in the town.
We used our time wisely in Whitby and managed to pack in a trip to the Abbey (our primary reason for coming), a walk out along the harbour arm, a snack in a very nice bakery and dinner in one of the restaurants lining the harbour. The harbour area is relatively large and in it you will find a mixture of working boats, pleasure craft and tourist boats waiting to give visitors a sea trip along the adjacent coast. Worthy of a look are the swing bridge across the river Esk from which you can get some good photos of the harbour itself. On the day of our visit, there were many people dressed as pirates and a band were performing on the bandstand, behind which we found an interesting sculpture of women preparing freshly caught fish. Looming above the harbour is the church of St Mary and the gaunt silhouette of Whitby Abbey and this can make for some good photographs.
There are plenty of food and drink outlets in the vicinity suitable for all tastes and of course being a seaside town plenty of fish & scampi outlets as well. We noticed what we assumed were ‘hen’ and ‘stag’ parties in the area though they did not seem to be causing any problems in the time that we were there. There are souvenir shops selling all manner of trinkets and seaside rocks if you are looking to take back a memento of your trip. A most enjoyable afternoon.
If you enjoy a walk by the sea then the visitor may wish to continue along one of the two harbour arms. We chose the western arm and continued out towards the lighthouse. The harbour arm itself is fairly wide and of stone & concrete construction so ideal if you have any qualms about walking beside the sea. The last section beyond the lighthouse is an elevated wooden platform mounted on top of a lower lying stone pier and although quite sturdy does have gaps in the floorboards allowing visitors to see the concrete below.
On the way out along the arm, it is worth turning back to get some fine views of the harbour with the silhouette of the abbey on the hills above. At the end of the arm there are fine views to the west past Whitby beach and along the coast to Sandsend. From this vantage point you can also watch the tourist boats taking visitors out to sea and on the day of our visit these boats were being buffeted by strong waves and the wind.

This place is really lovely. Right in the centre of everything, this apartment has everything you need to make a comfortable stay! Very clean and modern! Especially with problems enjoying travelling at the moment, this place allows you to enter the apartment without having to meet anyone. Very good stay!

Love Whitby. An historical gem. The Marina end is fabulous you can really see and feel the history as you soak up the surroundings. Walking down to the seafront however, is far more commercialised with amusement arcades, etc. I felt that was a bit of a let down and disappointing to see. People everywhere, I guess tourism demands these things. Felt a bit Blackpoolish down that end so avoided that on the second day there. Boat trip was good for £5 each and some nice little shops off the main tourist areas. Would recommend the open top Whitby Tour bus as that takes you around the different areas and up to the Abbey.

There’s something magical about Whitby Harbour, which takes you back in time.
It sits beneath the steep sides of the town on either side, with the famous church and Abbey high above it on one side behind a jumble of lovely old buildings with orange roof tiles.
The Harbour is lined with bars, restaurants, amusement arcades and shops and we thoroughly enjoyed grabbing take away fish and chips and eating them on the harbour wall.
Fishing boats and tourist boats periodically drift in and out and there is a bridge which opens to allow larger vessels through in the middle of the town.
It’s a great spot to watch the world go by for a while...

I saw a picture of Whitby, taken by a North Yorkshire photographer and fell in love. 2 years and over 5000 miles later, I finally got there. From the moment we got our first glimpse coming over the moors, I felt like I was home, the emotion was intense.
We stayed at the Cobweb Cottage from 22/11/2019 through 6/12/2019 and the only thing that was not enjoyable was leaving. The people were amazingly welcoming and warm. The Whitby Way became our local pub, for the football and a fantastic pint. Being from a part of the US where nothing is in walking distance, it was fantastic having everything you could ever want within walking distance, the green grocer, the bakeries (The bread from Elizabeth Botham's bakery was amazing!), the butchers, (My London born hubby was thrilled to find pork with cracklin as it had been 6 years since he had a proper pork roast.) We walked the town every day, rain or shine. We will be back, permanently, one day soon. If you get the chance, you should definitely visit!

Whitby is a lovely seaside town and well worth a visit. However Whitby council like to take high parking charges yet not maintain their parking meters so they all work with card or cash and as for the toilets - I dont mind paying 40p for toilets if that gets me a clean facility with toilet paper available and replenished in all cubicles. Sadly thats not the case even in these times of Corvid and the need for extra care. The toilets today were disgusting, unhygenic with no soap in some of the wash basins and no toilet roll. The floor was appalling!! For 40p I expect much better Whitby Council. Time you spent some of the money you take from visitors in properly looking after them and providing a service to match the lovely town!!

We are appalled with ourselves that we have not visited her until our retirement. What an utterly charming town, with it's pretty houses jostling down the hill to the harbour. There is so much to see from the harbour itself, to the abbey perched above, up 199 steps the lighthouse & museums dedicated to Captain Cook. The shopping town is also healthier & more vibrant that many in the UK today.
One treat is to sample a seafood meal, which we did in Trenchers. Fabulous!

Rather than sit in the house all day, had a ride out to Whitby primarily for some Fish n Chips. Thought it would be quiete but on arriving realised it's the kids half term and was rammed.
Good to see at the end of the day.
On that note, we were only left with the option to park in the large car park near the harbour which we were immediately 'ripped off' with a £7 fee to park.
Shame on Scarborough Council!
Where do you get your fee's from?
Nice to see Whitby. Hopefully grab my usual free spot next time.

Hi
Visiting in August does anyone know if the paddling pool on West Cliff is open?
Written July 26, 2020
Hi thinking of visiting this weekend. What pleasure boat trips are running? Also are there arcades open for the kids? Thanks
Written July 14, 2020
Hi Was there last weekend, 20 minute boat trips are regular from the harbour, 2 of 3 operators, Not sure about longer trips but assume they are, also fishing trips are available. All the arcades are open along with most shops, some bars remain shut shut so food is in a few bars or take away of which loads available. In short lots to d and see although it can be a little crowded.

As a blue badge holder and going to stay in Whitby for 4 nights, am I able to park on Pier Road for whole of stay with accommodation scratchcard?
Written August 22, 2019
Sorry I can't help you, you would be best to contact North Yorkshire County Council (I think) who look after parking for Whitby. Otherwise just google it.
