Had a fantastic experiance on one of the hottest days of the year last year. The sea was flat calm and once out in open water, a cool breeze was most welcomed. What a magical day both my sister and I had. Worth the £3. We're hoping to repeat it again this year. Love Whitby.

The old lifeboat has been sold and is no longer in Whitby. It therefore cannot provide trips. There are plenty of other boats than can though.

I was looking forward to this trip on an old lifeboat, it could have been a good trip but in the event was very poor. To start with, no health and safety covered and with youngsters onboard this was a must, no mention of life jackets or procedures, but, as we passed the current Whitby lifeboat we were told that if anything went wrong, we could have a free ride on it. The person in charge was more intent on letting go of the wheel, taking pictures and shouting out to people on the harbour wall or on other boats.
It would have been good to have been told a little about the lifeboat's history and something about the coast but nothing other than putting music on. Once leaving the harbour to head out for a buoy which was the turning point, the boat started to pitch in the waves, nothing alarming, but to be told "This is better than Alton Towers but you don't lose your leg", a reference to the Smiler accident in June 2015, is nothing short of disgraceful.
The OIC did joke about Health and Safety on the way in!
The operators of this trip should be ashamed and will be reported to the Health & Safety executive.
Overall what could be a good trip ruined but woefully amateurish staff.

Having read the other reviews on this lifeboat trip, I can only assume we hit a bad day for it (Wed 18th). My wife and I got on board on impulse, just after arriving in Whitby for the day, and at that stage were unaware of the conditions out to sea.
It was OK for the first few minutes whilst we were still in the harbour, and the commentary was interesting and amusing. Then we were in the bay. Here the waves were high, my wife was clinging on for dear life as the railings around the deck looked unlikely to stop anyone from falling overboard, and we were covered in spray more than once. Also the commentary virtually stopped, being restricted to such things as "Here's a big wave coming", "We're going out to that buoy" and "We're coming back in now". Presumably the skipper was concentrating on keeping us afloat?
This was not fun, and we were very glad indeed when it was over. In my opinion the boat should not have gone out in such conditions, or at least there should have been some kind of warning beforehand about the height of the waves. Oh, and negotiating the awkward set of movable steps to get from the land to the boat and back - without any assistance - was not easy.
I would suggest that before deciding to go on this trip you walk further on and have a look at the sea first.

Here in beautiful Whitby for the weekend. Having planned our trip and done our research we were really looking forward to this boat trip. Sadly it was a total disappointment.
We were welcomed on board by the captain who was dressed like a pirate, given a quick safety briefing and off we went.
I was expecting a commentary about the boat and it's history, but absolutely nothing.
We sailed out to sea, turned round a buoy and came back again - lovely, but could have done that on any boat.
Felt frustrated and totally disappointed

We thoroughly enjoyed our time on the old Whitby lifeboat. Great crew, great experience! We enjoyed it so much that my ten year old wanted to do it again. Which we did a few days later. At the price we paid it was good value. You get at least 25 minutes out on the water. Some great photo opportunities too. We loved it!

This lovely old Lifeboat must be the one that was in service back in the fifties when I was a kid. Have been on it a few times now, in fact we always sail on it when visiting Whitby. The Skipper is brilliant with a comedy act to suit any conditions, he sometimes flies the Jolly Roger, Any trip to Whitby would not be complete without the old Lifeboat ride, the price has gone up a bit since last year, what more could anyone want for £3, and could not be any safer, it is a Lifeboat.

Lovely little trip on this old lifeboat, crew really friendly, great value for money @ £2.50 each, great views of the Abbey from out at sea. All in all a lovely way to spend half an hour.
