St Marys has a great vantage point on the cliff at the top of 199 steps from Whitby and by the Abbey. Despite it's neighbour, this church shouldn't be overlooked for the larger, gothic ruin next to it, as the interior is actually fascinating. A unique three tier pulpit, complete with ear trumpets, and sectioned off, lockable, 'family pews' -... More

A must-see church with original box pews and loads of history. Current building is older than the Abbey ruins, Try to find a volunteer to show you round; we had a very helpful man who explained everything with interest, even that his wife winds the 400 year old clock - and it has to be wound backwards. The ear trumpets... More

Once you have scaled the 199 steps to the top, you are in for a treat. This is a very well preserved church from around 1110, although its interior dates mainly from the late 18th century - All the information is there to see. Outside of the church provides stunning views of Whitby Town, the Harbour and more.

The christmas tree exhibition was on and it was just wonderful. A very old church and the inside gave you an insight to what it was like many many years ago when pews were reserved for families.

Didn't expect the sight of numerous Christmas trees presented to the church by local businesses and residents of Whitby. Truly an amazing sight to see the different individually decorated trees, full of colour and many with meaning, dedicated to beloved ones no longer with us. Took quite a time reading where the trees came from and the dedications. A enjoyable... More

We visited just before Christmas Day and the church was full of beautifully decorated Christmas trees from all sorts of businesses and schools in the town. We were able to walk our two dogs through the church with us which was a real bonus on a bitterly cold day. A must see along with the Abbey.

Lovely Christmas tree display. Not sure how many trees there are but there are lots, all very well decorated. You will not be disappointed.

As the church is at the top is the 199 steps and next to the abbey it occupies a commanding view of the town and the coast. Some of the headstones are very old (from the 1700's) but are still standing despite a lot being very weather worn.

A smallish parish church near the famous Abbey on the hill. We were lucky enough to be able to see the church bells ringers when we visited and asked lots of questions. Interesting to see for historical and cultural purposes.worth visiting when in Whitby.
