In Search of Mr Swales
Oct 2021
Slightly creepy, alternative, seafarers church that is quite different to regular churches I have visited - the box pews, the lack of stained glass windows and its general layout. Outside is the haunting, eerie graveyard. Having read 'Dracula' I was intrigued to find a gravestone bearing the name "Swales", the name that inspired Bram Stoker and which he used for Dracula's first victim in Whitby. Was this the same Swales? The date of death seemed to coincide with Stoker's visit to Whitby.

Creepy

I always visit churches just to sample some of the history even though I don’t worship in any. This is probably one of the most weird inside with quite a creepy interior, it doesn’t seem conducive for worship! The church yard is very old.

Amazing interior
Oct 2021 • Family
An unexpected gem of a church where the interior has kept its box pews and balcony pews. You can picture the old seamen praying in the church. Think the kids were more interested in the church than the Abbey itself. Well worth a visit when open.

Beautiful church history and architecture
Sep 2021 • Couples
At the top of the steps is the church of st Mary, well worth a visit to learn the history of this architecturally fine church. There are lots of exhibits and information points as well as a little gift shop and people on hand to answer questions. Outside there's the graveyard which is worth a look especially to locate the graves if you have attended a ghost walk whooooooo.
Outside views are stunning with areas to rest before going back down the steps or to the Abbey

Not your usual looking church inside, but great location
Sep 2021
Located at the top of the 199 steps, The church looks stunning in its situation, overlooked by the Abbey and overlooking Whitby. However, inside, it did not resemble a normal church. The pews were all box pews, and it had no central aisle, nor stained glass windows. Dotted around there were some intersting artefacts

After climbing the 199 steps we found this church that we didn't know about. We thought it was Just Whitby Abbey at the top but the Church was an unexpected find and we well worth a visit.

Beautiful church

Situated at the top of the 199 steps, St Mary's Church is a must when in Whitby. Great views of the harbour and coast and of course the association with Dracula.

Beautiful iconic church overlooking Whitby Harbour

Great volunteers make for a great building. Well looked after and proudly shown off without a fuss and a gentle background of Gregorian chants. Bonus that dogs are allowed

Beautiful old church. Steeped in history and well worth a visit. Just a stones throw from the abbey.
