If you've made your way up the 199 Steps to the Abbey, you might as well take in the church as well. You can view it from the outside or pop in if you like looking around church interiors. There is a fair-sized graveyard outside so take care where you walk. A path along the boundary wall leads to the... More

Great climb up the 199 steps to this very remarkable church. Just looking around the graveyard gives a history of the people who lived there and how families were united in death. Amazing views over various parts of Whitby - a must see if visiting this town.

As there is a fee to enter the Abbey we normally head for the tearoom and garden after climbing the 199 steps, then have a look around the church, its grounds and the view before we go back down. My 5 year old son is very into pirates at the moment and was very excited to find a pirate's grave.

Climb the Whitby steps to a remarkable church in a remarkable graveyard. This is not your everyday church, it oozes with history and the lives of real Whitby people, step back in time by stepping up the Whitby Steps to this important part of Whitbys history.

We loved St Mary's Church. We had been to the Abbey up the 199 stairs and popped into St Mary's It is extremely attractive externally and is interesting internally as it has cubicles rather than pews for the congregation. As it is so high beside the ruined priory there are magnificent views of the sea and of the town. It... More

Really good visit, the stone effect alter is very beautiful and nice to stop and take a few quiet minutes out of a busy day. Make sure you find Caedmon's Cross at the top of the steps, which is stunningly carved and remembers the first English poet.

Went in here after walking up the 199 steps. The seating is strange, there are like square open booths with benches in in a square. You were able to reserve your own booth and covers were put on the seats to stop people getting soot on their clothes from the fire

the church was originally built in the 1100's but many changes can be seen, the interior has stayed the same from what we were told since the 18th century, the pews are in high sided boxes which have family names on but there are a few for "strangers" the pulpit is very high so you can see out of your... Needs to be seen, exceptional interior. The likes you don't see very often. Interesting. There are many steps up to the church but you can drive up from another angle.Plenty of parking.
