The climb seems to go on forever. There are a few benches to rest if needed. At the top there is a church and the historic Abbey as well as spectacular views over the town, harbour and coast. Worth the effort.

Don't worry about the 199 steps wearing you out, as you will stop 199 times to admire the changing view as you climb! There are opportunities to rest if you in need. I took about 199 photos too - I'm sure you will too :) An absolute MUST do activity when visiting Whitby (and you could reward yourself with a trip to the Whitby Brewery at the top!).

We accidentally missed it on the way down and went down the donkey track right next to it. Which was quiet and I probably preferred actually! You need to walk through the church graveyard to go the right way. The steps back up were fine. There's nice view over Whitby. Our 4 year old managed it no problems.

We loved walking up and down the steps for the amazing view from the top. Pleased to see they had a one way system in place to keep social distancing which made it feel very safe

A nice steady stroll, only 199 steps, well worth doing, the views are amazing. The Abbey is stunning, the church is a serene place. You need to do the climb up these steps at least once in your life.
