Interesting to see hydro in action
Jan 2020 • Couples
We were so impressed with this project. The info board was very informative. We saw it after a period of rain and the power of the water was amazing.

You don't need to spend long here, but as it is only a short walk from the centre it is worth a look. Would love to see it at salmon leaping time. Maybe we will be back.

The hydo is quite interesting and it’s nice scenery. Not worth a special visit but if your in settle centre its worth a wander down the road a few minutes to take a look.

Worth a stroll

Not right time for the salmon and the river burst its banks - could just about see the weir as the river was that high (torrential rain that day) but still worth a look and couple of photos as never seen a river so high

Well worth a look

Just a few minutes walk from the town centre Settle hydro is worth visiting. The information board explains how the unit works and it is interesting to see it so close to a once water powered mill.

Quite interesting & worth a visit if you're in the area.
Water level wasn't high on our visit, so the Hydro electric screw wasn't in operation, so that was a pity

Makes a great photo especially after heavy rainfall. Not really my forte but have read the info and still worth a visit.

Water Works
May 2018 • Couples
Very few places in the world to inspect the workings of a real Archimedes screw, thanks to the initiative of local people some years ago, You may also have the chance to see salmon leaping here at the weir. And in very wet weather you can be inspired by the rush of water over the weir. In limestone country, the rain seeps through the stone and into the river very quickly, so rain further up the dale will soon power its way down to the Ribble and produce a fine spectacle here.

Something fishy going on?

This is an advanced form of generating 'green' electricity with the use of an Archimedean screw. However, I am led to believe that the salmon numbers are down since this was created in 2009? Great engineering but at what price?

Opposition from a few anglers persists despite there being no evidence to support the theory that Archimedean screws harm fish migration. We operate under an Abstraction Licence from the Environment Agency which gives priority to fish migration by restricting our generation at low flows to maintain an agreed “Hands-Off” flow in the fish pass. We stop generating completely as soon as flow in the pass approaches the Hands-Off flow limit. During flood cycles, of which there are many at Settle, the hydro provides passage for 3 tonnes of water every second, extending the effective capacity of the weir and alleviating flood risk upstream, as well as extending the period during which the fish pass is effective. We have co-operated with two environmental studies: one by the Environment Agency in 2013 concluded that there was no evidence to support the theory that the hydro had any effect on upstream Salmonid migration. The second in 2015 by the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) tracked downstream migrating smolts (young salmon) and found that the 40% of migrating smolts that passed through the screw did so without loss. The speed of the screw is limited and the leading edge is fitted with a soft rubber bumper, making it fish friendly to any that do get into the turbine.

After some rain (and we did have that this year) it's lovely to see the water rushing .... a lot of noise :)
