I had planned a trip on the Settle - Carlisle railway and by chance found the Settle signal box open, Bob and his fellow signalman were very knowledgeable about its workings and showed me how trains were "passed on" and "received" between sections. If you have an interest in railway workings I would recommend a visit and allow time to take it all in, we were a bit rushed with catching a train to Carlisle but would make a return visit when time allows

First ever visit to a signal box and the added bonus of 3 passionate enthusiasts on site telling the history and showing how the points and signals work

This is a real experience. It brings to life the important part that the signal man played in the operation of the railways and demonstrates how this very complex system worked. Very worthy of a visit. Limited opening hours.

We both love steam locomotives and had popped into a Settle to watch A4 Pacific Union of South Africa steam through. We had no prior knowledge of the signal box so popped in on spec. The volunteers running it could not have been more welcoming and knowledgable and my girl friend loved it. I would give them 11 out of 10 if I could.

After getting the train back from Appleby to Settle I noticed a sign saying that the signal box was open. We walked up the steps to the box and were greeted by various volunteers whom had either worked in a signal box or had worked on the mechanics of them. They were very informative and taught us how to move the levers to move various signals. And we used the bells to communicate with another station to allow my (imaginary) postal train through . It was good fun and I even got a certificate !

To be honest, most of the time I saw this I was paying a bit more attention to making sure we were going to get on the train with all our luggage but I did take time to enjoy the fact that the community took pride in its rail heritage and did a nice job with renovations and upkeep. Rail fans would probably be able to put it all in a better perspective but it is as enjoyable to see along the way as well.

This is a very pretty railway station which looks rather olde worldly but is kept in excellent condition. The photo above (of the signal box) is rather misleading as there is now a great big tower structure behind it which would spoil any photographer’s picture

Nice little station shop selling a selection of it3ms associated with the station and the Settle to Carlisle line. A short visit sufficed for us as there were no steam trains due through but we did get a number of interesting photos. Very pleasant lady working in the shop.

Its not often that you can see a Signal Boy well preserved as this one. Its a good example of Britain's railway history.

Well worth a visit. Shame the acual box was closed when we visited

It’s very interesting visiting the station and the signal box is part of a very picturesque scene. It’s wonderful to see the whole place beautifully restored which is a credit to the volunteers.
