About
Pssst… Become part of London’s worst kept secret! Somewhere on Sloane Avenue lies Barts, one of London’s first late-night speakeasy bars. Set in the 1920’s prohibition era as the private apartment of the elusive Uncle Barts, friends and associates are invited to join in the bootlegging activities operated by his gangsters. Sneak into the apartment through the black door to gain access to illicit cocktails and top secret shindigs, where you can also smuggle drinks into the Secret Garden to evade the cops!

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Chelsea
Wealth courses through The King's Road, Chelsea's upmarket artery of West London life packed with shops, eateries and glitzy nightspots. For people-watching at its best and luxury retail therapy that's largely unrivalled, this area cannot be missed. But if this showy street starts to overwhelm or a moment of price tag shock sends you reeling, a quick detour down pretty much any of many King's Road veins will reveal a quieter side of Chelsea. Here the stately Royal Hospital hosts its world-famous flower show, and the Thames rolls along at a lazy pace, with leafy Battersea Park and its Peace Pagoda beckoning from across the river.

The staff were entertaining and really sold the hidden bar theme. Food originated from Gaucho (next door) also a plus

Surprise Visit
Oct 2021
I had been a resident of the Cloisters some years ago and was meeting a friend in the area so we met at Barts - I thought it was a plain old residents bar but no its a very trendy independent cocktail bar - speakeasy style - with top staff and a friendly atmosphere - once you get in of course! Well worth a visit. Quite remarkable.

Barts…
Sep 2021 • Couples
Decided to visit Barts after they decided to drop the huge minimum spend limits post Covid. Unfortunately we felt it didn’t live up to expectations, staff were rather preoccupied even though it wasn’t busy, service was slow and drinks were very pricey, even for the area. Would go again but not for a while.

Quirky
Oct 2021
Came here at the weekend for cocktails with a group of friends. The bar itself is certainly quirky – from the secret entrance to the décor and the cocktails. A little disappointing that, although we had booked for 13 of us, we were made to squash around a corner table that was really only fit for 8 people and there was quite an issue with them providing stools for the rest of our party to perch on – we were VERY squashed the whole evening. Having said that the service was attentive and the cocktails well presented (although they were very expensive as nearly all of them were heavily loaded with ice or massive ice-cubes so you did not really get much of an actual drink in your glass!). Fun place to meet up, maybe check in advance that your table will actually fit the amount of people in your booking and ask if you can have your drinks without ice!

Great cocktails and atmosphere
Sep 2021 • Friends
When visiting Barts you pay for the whole experience, the cocktails are very expensive, but the atmosphere, decor and service all contribute to that price. From the moment you enter it’s a lot of fun, and it’s a great place to visit for photos too. I bought the Luck Be A Lady cocktail which tasted lovely. I couldn’t actually taste the alcohol but was tipsy after just one! Shoutout to Luca who provided great service and cocktail suggestions!

Small fun bar with quirky cocktails
May 2021 • Couples
Barts have a great Instagram page showing the style and drinks they offer.

We came on a date night and all staff members were welcoming and friendly. It’s a small bar with a short bar food menu and a drinks/cocktail menu. Cocktails on offer were quirky and different to the usual cocktails in most places which is great- we were intrigued to see what the cocktails would look and taste like.

The seats options in my opinion were limited as the bar floor space is quite small and there were about 9 staff running around. If I would recommend asking for a booth table or possibly sit in the garden if the weather is nice. If you’re looking for a quiet/secluded bar this isn’t the place for you, the music is quite loud and there’s lots of staff moving around.

My only advice to staff is to let customers know all whiskies and spirits are by the bottle.

Not impressed
Oct 2020
I don’t think I’ve been anywhere in a while where both myself and my friend have left and said to each other - nope we’re never going there again.

To start with this apparent speakeasy is just in the lobby of Chelsea Cloisters - not the most glamorous setting these days. We eventually made it in after being forced to find our reservation in my emails to reel off the ‘secret password’. We were then shown to our table by a surly waiter who acted like he was being forced to work there for free. We were told as soon as we sat down that we were only allowed to stay there for 90 minutes, and it was only downhill from there. I asked what was recommended on the food list - they didn’t know, hadn’t tried anything. When the food came I asked for a knife and fork - they didn’t have any. So I had to eat a runny cheese empanada on a napkin with my hands and the cheese went all over the table.

We planned to stay there all night but given the poor service and 90 min time deadline we asked for our bill - £70 for two cocktails and two snacks.

Please don’t waste your time going here.

Charged for no show when 15 mins late!!
Oct 2020 • Couples
Couldn’t give 0 stars so had to do 1! 15 mins late for reservation and charged £50 for no show! Apparently someone took our reservation which is odd considering it’s a ‘secret bar’ so wouldn’t have thought there would be a lot of walk in trade. CB incoming!!!
