Thankfully, you don’t have to be a football fan or even remotely interested in the game to appreciate this production. Neither do you have to have seen the film. Jess, a Beckham-crazy young, female footballer from an Indian family faces many protests from her family as she attempts to excel in the game. She becomes embroiled in a love rival between her friend and team mate Jules, over Joe, their football coach. And all this amidst the frenzied preparations for her older sister’s wedding. It’s a happy, feel good show with some clever songs and plenty of vibrant colours. Okay a football suspended on a string is a little tacky, but how else can you successfully kick a ball on stage and angle it correctly?

Feel good fun!

I actually saw it twice in 5 weeks and the second viewing was more enjoyable because of my anticipation of the next entertaining moment. Although avoid the £15 day seats because the stage is raised, especially in the fantastically designed Phoenix Theatre where even from the back row you have a perfect view.

As a fan of the movie, I was skeptical about a musical adaptation but as soon as I walked in and saw the beautiful Bend It Like Beckham mural I was excited and from start to finish, I was not let down. Bend It Like Beckham is full of fun, laughs, colour and joy. While the songs are uplifting, from the tongue in cheek introduction to "UB2" to the inspiring "Glorious"; sung beautifully by Natalie Dew.

I am also a Jamie Campbell Bower convert, you could actually see Joe falling in love with Jess and "More Fool Me" perfectly expressed his feelings. While, "Bend It" continues the fantastic songs, showing through song the relationship between teenagers and their parents. However, the highlight of the night was "People Like Us" sung by Tony Jayawardena about his experience of prejudice. Furthermore, all of the cast are extremely talented but the soccer ball light was disappointing.

I'm actually tempted to watch Bend It Like Beckham again to see Lauren Samuels as Jules because she has been unavailable both times I attended.

5 year old loved it and sings the songs at home!

This was a great show full of energy and great songs. I didn't want it to end. It was a real unique tribute to the Indian community and distinct from the movie

A great adaptation of the movie

Truth to be told, I was not that enthusiastic about this play. I was not interested in football or teenage romance. However, the play was less about football or teenage romance and more about the portrayal of South Asian community in London. Very thought provoking, especially for someone who has never been exposed with the culture before. It resonated strongly with me, because of my background from conservative immigrant community. Definitely recommended.

How do you bend it like Beckham on stage?

The show serves up the vibrancy one would expect but could have done with more editing. The script carefully addresses current political, religious and social issues, putting football lower down on the list. It would have been nice to see more innovative ways to capture sports on stage.

Went in with two teens and two Americans who really didn't know anything about Southall Asian culture and the nuances of life in London for an indian. Came out with such a 'feel good' factor.Worked for all of us! Would even recommend it to people who don't like musicals
