The Greenwich tour was arranged as a birthday present by my father, with Mr. Mclory. I was, at first, highly skeptical about this tour, since I am a history graduate and felt, in my conceit , that it would not be particularly interesting or educational, how wrong I was. The tour started with the Cutty Sark where Brian, an extremely personable and knowledgeable person, told us the history not only of the ship herself but also the connection between Robert Burn's poem Tam'oshanter, to the name of the ship and the horse's tail held in the hand of the ship's "Figurehead", and that was only the start. By the end of this highly entertaining and informative tour,we had learned about Greenwich's royal connections, its connections with Admiral Lord Nelson and of course, Sir Christopher Wren . I cannot say enough in praise of our guide, with whom we were almost immediately on first name terms, for his sense of humor, infinite patience, while I translated for my non English speaking partner, and in depth knowledge of his subject. My favorite part of the tour was "The Queen's House", built by Wren for Queen Anne, and its fabulous Tulip staircase, which really does seem blue in photos, and comes complete with ghosts! I would recommend comfortable shoes and definitely a camera or cell phone with good camera function because there are fabulous views of the river, Greenwich park, not to mention the Ascension of Nelson, based on the famous work on the Pantheon in Athens, the stained glass taken from the Baltic Exchange, and of course the stained glass panel of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.I would not hesitate to recommend this tour, and in particular Brian Mclory, to anyone with even a slight interest in Greenwich, since it was not only informative, but more importantly great fun.

Response from Brian M, Owner at City Ranger Walks

Thank you very much for your comprehensive and complimentary review. Your knowledge of history was beneficial to me as you raised a query about the composition of Anne Boleyn’s coat of arms and as a result of research it has increased my knowledge of the subject. It is exactly the type of information that I try to collect. It is not necessarily information that I will use directly on a future walk but forms that ‘depth of knowledge’ that you refer to in the review. You quite rightly point out that Greenwich is a photogenic historical venue suitable for a visit with or without a guide. I like to think that a guide can add humour to history with a few well chosen anecdotes.

An utterly fascinating evening of great interest to the assembled group - not least because it involved individuals most recently in the news - Julian Assange and Lord Lucan. The illustrated talk really brought to life a different side to London. We are very keen to walk the area ourselves now to see the places for ourselves. We can thoroughly recommend Brian - and fount of 'useful' information!

Brian came to Morden College on the evening of 19th March and gave a slideshow and talk on the Royal Borough of Greenwich to our residents and beneficiaries. It was an extremely entertaining evening - perfectly pitched for the audience. Brian answered questions from the audience on the evening and also came back with e mail replies to the questions he had to research - very impressed. We will invite him again.

It was an excellent and most informative walk. Brian is extremely knowledgeable and accommodating and made the city so alive and meaningful. This walk is a lovely taste of our wonderful City and would be useful and most enjoyable to anyone living or visiting London. I cannot recommend it highly enough and will certainly be suggesting it to my friends, colleagues and acquaintances. I will join Brian again if I am able to do so, for this walk made me appreciate London and its history even more than ever.
