Visited on sunday night with a group of friends and our three dogs. All staff very friendly and welcoming to the dogs. The manager came across and introduced himself. Very neat clean beer garden. Screens showing football, great idea.screen above bar displays live info for gipsy hill station. Will return shortly and frequently.

This friendly boozer offers good prices, a nice crowd and often has live music / community functions on as well. A local treasure in the Gipsy Hill area. One of the best pints of Guinness in London too.

I popped in, just trying out local hostelries.

This is a vast, traditionally built pub.

They had bottled real ale but none on tap. Lots of lagers! Lots of sofas and a big garden. Big TV screens.

Interestingly, they advertised themed nights. One that caught my eye was an Art Evening, materials supplied. That sounds very good.

I won't return as there was no ale.

went to the Gypsy Hill Tavern last night, lured by the fact that Sydenham Blues Club has decamped there having had to move from the Grape and Grain due to a change of management. This was the first night at the new venue (gigs will be every Friday) and featured the Dave Briggs Band. Dave, the band leader, singer and guitarist, is a Rock n' Roll and Boogie specialist of a high order, his credits including doing the farewell European tour of Scottie Moore (Elvis Presley's guitarist), and always brings an excellent band with him, so the standard of performance and musicianship on display was very high. The gig was not particularly well attended which was a shame, perhaps because it was organised at short notice and the word has yet to get around, but everyone who took the trouble to be there had a good time with a lot of jiving going on!

As one would expect with any new venture, there were a few teething issues, the primary one being that the band were too loud in the first set and, since the Tavern has lots of hard surfaces, the sound bounced around. A tweaking of the sound for the second set improved matters immensely and the band could be heard at their best.

I understand that Becky, who runs Sydenham Blues Club, in consultation with the pub management is broadening the booking policy and looking for a more diverse spread of acts for the new venue.

The pub itself is a real Irish boozer, not one of those ersatz imitations cynically created by the pub-cos, is efficiently staffed, has comfortable seating, a good selection of drinks and a large beer garden with ample benches at which to sit. We will certainly be going back and suspect Friday at the Gypsy Hill Tavern will be a regular must-do on our calendar!

Had the fortune to have a couple of late drinks in the GHT before catching a late train home. Both times served by a very helpful and pleasant barmaid. This boozer has character, and could probably do with redecorating, but that's part of the charm. I got about a pound change from a tenner for two and a half pints of lager, which is very unexpected (and welcome) in London. Well done GHT and especially the barmaid.
