The area

Address
Neighborhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighborhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighborhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

If you would like a unique experience when you go to London (something that a very limited number of people get to see), get tickets for the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London. For a measly 5 pounds you can participate in this tour. Beware that a limited number of people get to see this tour (maybe 30-40 people per night) so you must go online immediately when the tickets become available which is the beginning of the month approximately 30 days in advance of your visit. What is the Ceremony of the Keys? It is a ceremony that has taken place for over 700 years, nightly, where they lock up the Tower of London (9:30 PM or 21:30). The ceremony lasts about an hour and is hosted by a Yeoman Warder (in our case Shady Lane - who was awesome! A+++). If you are lucky enough to get tickets, it is absolutely worth it! God save the King!

It's a lovely ceremony, full of terrific pomp and circumstance which Americans eat up. Our guide was right out of central casting, punctuating every sentence with a sharp, YEAH? He was amiable and more than happy to answer every question we had. I don't want to be that American who writes something negative about an 800 year old ceremony, but where it fell down is when our intimate group of 40 or so people were suddenly overwhelmed by at least twice that number in additional guests who appeared at the last minute and somewhat crowded us out. But, all in all, it wasn't a big deal. If you've ever been to the Tower during the day, you know just how much of a zoo it is. The ceremony itself, which is quite short, didn't seem to make much sense. A sentry watches a guy lock up a gate. That guy approaches the sentry who yells, "whose keys are these?" The question doesn't make sense. Did the sentry not just watch the dude lock up multiple gates? Who else's keys could they have been? But, the ceremony's been working for 800 years, so who am I to quibble? So, get up early, log in with your phone, laptop and work computer, and good luck with the ticket lottery!

I have wanted to do this for a long time and was delighted to get tickets for a friend and me. There is such an atmosphere in the Tower at night and our Yeoman guide, Gary, was amazing. He told us a lot of interesting facts about the Tower but he was also really funny and very approachable. He explained what would happen and as we waited two large groups joined us, but Gary made sure we go the first opportunity of places. He was also good about putting 'long people' at the back so us vertically challenged people got a good view. The Ceremony itself was really interesting and it felt such a privilege to be there. For me the most amazing thing was the playing of The Last Post at the end - so poignant and moving. It was cold and dark - and a little bit creepy - but it was so worth it.

We have done the regular Tower of London tour, so this experience sounded like a cool thing to do. You have to be quick to get tickets, as they are limited and go fast. A yeoman warder guides you through what will happen and gives the history of the ceremony. The ceremony itself is not very long, but the yeoman warder takes questions afterward. It was definitely worth it if you like history and tradition!

This was really cool and well worth it to set my alarm here in the USA to book these tickets. I was a little worried that some huge tourist group would show up based on some of the previous reviews, but it was a very small group that made it very intimate and special. My teen girls loved it and so did we.

Very old tradition which not everybody sees….. Professionally run, great access - buy direct as it is only 5 pounds per person. Access to watch the ceremony of the keys and you see an uncrowded London Tower in the night from inside the grounds….. you cannot take photos of video of the ceremony, but you can take photos/video of the grounds and you/your party in the grounds…. It goes ahead no matter what the weather, each and every evening.

This is a very special event that has occurred every night for over 700 years. The Tower area is dark and quiet, shutting out the noise of London. You really feel as if you have stepped back in time as you hear the gates clank and lock you inside the walls. Our group was 15 to 20 in number which made for an eerily interesting and fun time. Yeoman Warder Emily (apologies if I have gotten that wrong) did an excellent job of explaining the history and the process for locking the gates at the Tower. When you think back on the history of the Tower, who has lived there, world events, etc., as you stand in the dark listening to the bugle/trumpet playing the last song for the night, it creates a memorable experience.

It was a lovely ceremony and extremely informative. We would experience it again if we could. That being said... it was not as intimate as we had hoped. Granted, we only paid five pounds per person so cannot complain. However, anyone can pay over $150 pp to get an evening private tour of the Tower that includes the Ceremony of the Keys viewing. I would say there was well over 100 people viewing the ceremony with us. Our group started out with about 40. Two groups (60+ people) later joined us just as the ceremony started. Fortunately, everyone was well behaved and quiet. I would recommend this experience to all. Far better than being at TOL during the daytime hours.

Firstly your required to book your £5 ticket. You must book your ticket a month in advance, so if your wanting to attend the ceremony on say 20th January 2023, the tickets become available on midday 1st December 2022, be quick coz they go within a few days after release. You are required to be at the Tower by 9.30pm, arriving 10 minute’s prior to this is ample time, the warden comes out, checks your name of the list he has then once your all inside starts his spiel about the history and what’s going to happen. Then at 9.52pm the ceremony starts, by 10pm it’s all over and done with, a very interesting historical 8 minutes. It’s suitable for all ages including young children. All I can say is, if you haven’t done it before then it’s a must. ‘’God save the King’’……‍️󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This official closing ceremony of the Tower of London is an absolute must when visiting the city. However, you MUST obtain tickets online in the month prior to your visit. Be prepared to refresh the page numerous times till you are able to log in. If you are open to more than one or two days that’s all the better as they only allow 30 persons per night. Even if you have to change your entire itinerary to see this, DO IT! This closing ceremony has taken place every night with the excel of one for well over 700 years. Having seen this twice now, first the Queen’s keys and now the King’s keys, it is something you will thoroughly enjoy. The one downside is that no video or still photography is allowed. If you are fortunate to score tickets, you will not be disappointed!

This is a cool thing to do in London! We booked online before we traveled and the tickets are not expensive but they go fast. We only had two nights that we could attend so felt fortunate that we were able to attend. It's fun to be part of a small group there after everyone else has gone home. The yeoman warder had interesting and colorful stories about the history of the tower and the ceremony of the keys. It was actually quite moving!

We booked tickets months and advance and through a sad twist of fate yesterday when we went was the day that Charles was proclaimed king so for the first time in 70 years the Ceremony changed from Elisabeth to Charles. This meant that the entire body of Yeomen Warders (Beefeaters) attended along with their families and the Lieutenant of the Tower of London. The raven master led the ceremonies.

Even without the special occasion this is an ancient tradition that should be on everyone’s bucket list - think trooping the colour only much more private and atmospheric. Only around 50 attendees are allowed, you cannot take photos or eat/drink - just soak up the history and be there in the moment.

Sad that our beloved Monarch died however it is important that the traditions continue.

We went to the Ceremony last night. It was incredible. Barry, the assigned Yeoman Warder was a great mix of information and humour.
To be able to be part of history was amazing.
I will be trying to get tickets to bring the children on another occasion.

Great experience to see this ceremony at the Tower of London at night with only a few other tourists around. Have to plan ahead of time and wake up early to log onto the website to purchase tickets more than a month ahead of time. In addition to seeing the ceremony, we also had the opportunity to learn more about the guards at the Tower of London.

Not a performance for tourism but an experience of one of the lesser known traditions of British Military and Royal history. Performed every single night for hundreds of years, you are welcomed inside to have a brief overview of the towers significance and the ceremony itself led by one of the Yeoman. You then watch as the doors are secured for the night under escort of the military guard. No photographs are permitted of this event but they do allow questions that follow and I would highly recommend this experience if you can snag an invite or ticket.

After reading these excellent reviews I was expecting something similar for my visit. We started as a group of 45-50 which seemed just right for the space and layout of this part of the Tower but by the time the ceremony began numbers had trebled following the arrival of 2 other groups on separate Tower tours. The free for all for a place at the front was chaotic. If you were fortunate enough to be in the first or second row you saw everything. Everyone else had a severely restricted view. Cramming 150 people into the Ceremony of the Keys is far too many and the Tower of London organisers should be well aware of this. I’d been looking forward to attending for a long time. Having successfully negotiated the online booking experience I had high hopes. However the night itself was memorable for all the wrong reasons: bad organisation and misrepresentation of what to expect. Very, very disappointing.
