Neighborhood: Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighborhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.

    Fantastic and delicious
I had an absolutely fantastic time on the three day sourdough workshop with bread ahead. Manuel was hilarious and made the workshop so entertaining across three days, it's worth the money just for him. I came back with 11 different types of sourdough including croissants and focaccia. Lunch was included as well as treats each day from the bakery, doughnuts, cookies, brownies, etc. Would highly recommend the course.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a lovely review! Manuel will be thrilled to hear how much you enjoyed the 3-day sourdough course. We hope we you learnt lots of new sourdough related skills and techniques. We hope to see you again!

We really enjoyed the croissant workshop with Manuel. He was obliged to wear a mask which, combined with a strong admittedly charming French accent, made it difficult to follow the instructions. Manuel is a good tutor, passionate with a sense of humour which is important for workshops. He cared that we had good results and was honest, kind snd encouraging!
Hi, we’re so glad you enjoyed our croissant workshop with Manuel, we hope you gained lots of new skills, plus some delicious French pastries! Thank you for taking the time to leave us a lovely review, we hope to see you again.

    Amazing Doughnut Course
My partner and I did the Doughnut Course at Borough Market on Saturday with Aaron and Fi. It was such a fun and amazing experience. Everyone in the course seemed to be having a great time and Aaron and Fi made the environment so comfortable for everyone to chat and ask questions. We had a lot of fun, learned a lot and got to take home lots of delicious doughnuts. There were families, younger couples, kids and older individuals in the course and it was very inclusive and fun for all. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone looking for something different to do! Aaron also made an effort to get to know each and every one of us and took the time to speak to us about being Australian and we thought it was really lovely that he took the time to do that.
Hi Sarah, thanks so much for the kind words, we’re so pleased you’ve enjoyed learning to bake with us. Our main aim is to build confidence and knowledge through our workshops. We're so glad you’ve had such a positive experience at the school! We hope to welcome you back soon.

Things you and your partner can do for £180: fly to Paris or Berlin; book a B&B for a night or two and get pampered; get great seats at a world class West End musical; eat at one of London's best restaurants; or make your own doughnuts, remind them you're meant to have a tea break, stand the whole time, and take home 12 jam/custard doughnuts plus some dough.

It's an obvious choice.

Look, person-reading-this, do whatcha gonna do, and believe who you're gonna believe, but before writing this I did two things: 1) wrote to Bread Ahead about our concerns and 2) read what other people are saying here. Well, I wish my partner had seen these reviews before she spanked Paris airfare on a dozen doughnuts. And, I wish that when I told Bread Ahead in a nicely worded email that £180 is a bit steep for this fairly unremarkable experience, they hadn't replied "we will give you free access to our upcoming online courses."

Like, guys, the year is 2020. Yale posts many of its courses for free on various websites. YALE is giving away information, and you're telling me you're gonna hook it up and let me know about the secrets of baking? This is London - I can get 2 grams of Charlie for this money and go to the TATE. Your counter offer is giving me access to a fryer and letting me essentially perform the labor on 12 doughnuts. Come on, fam, I know people love experiences, but this is sugar, not nose candy. Who is kidding who here?

In synopsis: you kneed some dough, there's minimal chat, no music or 'vibe', you feel vaguely bored and keep waiting for the warm, cozy, bonding couples experience you want, and then they send you home with 12 doughnuts and you have this Emperor Has No Clothes feeling of, like, "Did everyone else really enjoy that and I'm just autistic, or was that just shockingly bland for £180?"

But don't listen to me. I'm an idiot. This is great value. Although, I have noticed you can buy 12 doughnuts directly from them for significantly less than the cost of a meal at Dabbous.

Shocking customer service. They take your money and do not offer refund or means of rebooking ( even though the claim they will).
At the moment giving them money would be like throwing it down the loo based on my experience.

I attended the babka and challah making course last week- along with 150 other people! There were far too many people to do this course properly. The person assisting couldn't keep up with the numerous questions coming through on chat so most went unanswered. There was an error in the recipe that was sent out ahead which was a big problem as the doughs had to be pre-made the day before. The sound kept muting which was extremely annoying and we had to continually let them know (via chat- "MUTE!" "she's muted" "we can't hear anything!") and ask for the instructor to repeat herself or repeat steps. A complicated plait pattern for the challah was nearly impossible to follow as they couldn't get a proper camera angle on it. (I looked on YouTube instead.) One came away with the feeling that they are just trying to rake in as much £££ as possible with these online courses without care to execute them properly.

Do not use this company!!!! My girlfriend purchased a pizza making course as an Xmas present. A week before the booking date there was a chance we would be unable to make the appointment, so we email them to ask if there is a possibility to reschedule. We were informed that there would be a £15 charge to reschedule the appointment (to be far this is in their terms), and they were putting our booking on hold (we only actually asked a question and didn’t say we wanted the booking put on hold). When we replied the next day to say we didn’t want to pay the £15 rescheduling charge we were told that the booking had now gone and we would need to pay the £15 or lose our money (£180). Customer care is clearly not a strong point.

The food is good, but terrible service and help. I do not recommend the deliveries: a third of the food is missing from the order, and you fight to be refunded. Cannot believe it, and what a disappointment when receiving the box.
I had ordered a breakfast bundle amongst other pastries, and was surprised to see a third f the bundle was missing!!
When I wrote to explain, the woman I was in contact with was very understanding, but after 10 days of still not being refunded for the 2 missing pastries, they eventually sent me a Paypal link (I have no Paypal account, shame on me) and refunded a ridiculous amout (2£ out of 15£).
I am disappointed and will never again buy from this place.

Really wish I'd seen the bad reviews on here before I booked a course as a gift. They advised that they will send info one week before. Nothing received. They won't pick up the phone or reply to emails. Luckily course recipient works in London so went & spoke to them the day BEFORE it was due to run as we'd received no information. Oh it's not running they said….. Course then moved to another date - apparently due to lack of participants . Then Covid 19 struck so replacement course cancelled. Had email offering voucher for another course from September 2020 onwards (NO CHANCE) or refund. Refund requested but no reply received. No refund received either & now over the paypal 180 day limit to get a refund. I'm so disgusted by this company's bad attitude.
Ignoring the Covid 19 issues - had we not chased up about the first date, we would have had a wasted trip to London because they had not bothered to notify us it was cancelled. Unlikely to get a refund so out of pocket. When life returns to normal, please do NOT use this company.

English tea time online course was good overall although instructions online differed to the written ones we were asked to prepare which led to timing differences.

Customer service is poor. List of ingredients sent 5 days before, not a week as advised. During covid19 with stock issues and queues, more time should be allowed, and at least follow stated online guidance.

We were promised a recording after the course....a week later nothing.

A friend had booked an in person course for April which was cancelled. He was promised to rebook for 6m which was not acceptable. Then he was offered a voucher and almost 2 months later he has not had it. They don't answer emails and barely answer the phone.

Disgusting service... Which is disappointing given the courses seem quite good.

Service and word of mouth are key and they are doing themselves a dis- service. It's not hard to answer emails. Especially during covid19 when I assume the store is closed or quieter and only courses are online. There is no excuse guven prices are not cheap. We are asked to support business during these difficult times, yet they fail dismally to inspire any reason to do so.

I used to work at Bread Ahead and when one of the deliveries came in, half of one crate had donuts which were not cooked/baked properly as you can see in the picture. The inside was raw dough and this is what Bread Ahead wanted to serve to their customers. I wasn't really impressed by this as I had to dispose majority of the donuts that day. I highly recommend you DO NOT purchase donuts from this place. Other than that, everything else at Bread Ahead was perfectly fine. The bread was nice and moist and the cinnamon buns were flavourful yet very hard but it was edible. However, I will not be visiting bread ahead again due to the donuts not being made properly and to add on top, the management system was awful.

If you’re considering buying a baking course read this first!

I’ve just seen Bread Ahead are
Advertising for BLACK FRIDAY baking class deals. I’m assuming it’s for online/baking school courses. Don’t be sucked in people the service these guys offer is horrendous. Even at Black Friday prices it is not worth the hassle. Whilst they might have knowledge of baking and some likeable teachers the way this outfit operates it should be avoided at all costs. You’ve only got to look at the other reviews to see that all they are really interested in is lining their own pockets, customer service is alien to these people. The guy in charge of the baking school is clearly in the wrong job as all he wants to do is argue the toss over the fact their set up is not all that and throw his weight around, some kind of superiority complex gong on. An incredibly unpleasant person. Having had issues with them over a baking class I booked for my wife I would never wish to deal with these people again. Avoid Avoid Avoid. So many genuinely superior offers elsewhere where they have actual interest in people and not just the dollar.

Booked on to a couple of courses, one of which, the doughnut course was cancelled at short notice. Other dates were offered and I asked to be re-booked but the communication from the school was so slow (weeks to reply to an email and no one picks up the phone) that I missed the available dates I could do. I'm still waiting for a refund for the course that was requested over a month ago. The one course that I did do (enriched dough) was great, the teacher was brilliant and I learned tons. But the whole experience from booking on the clunky website, to waiting a fortnight for anyone to reply to an email, to being out of pocket £90 for almost 2 months has been terrible.
