Address
Neighborhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighborhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighborhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

    Great place to visit
We went at the begining of March 2020 and had a lovely day out, the staff were polite and very good, we had afternoon tea which consisted of a glass of champagne on arrival, then they came with our sandwiches and cakes and tea or coffee, which was all very nice. No one rushed us to go, we spent about an hour or so over our food and enjoyed the fantastic views over London. When we left we were told there was a service charge of £4.00 which we would have left as a tip anyway. All in all a great day out.

    Afternoon tea fail
Well we got this as a gift from groupon as a present, it was ok, that’s literally all I can say! The setting was brilliant and the restaurant itself seats u around the window facing forward so you can look out! Afternoon tea consisted of a couple finger sandwiches, a couple of tarts and a scone! I had to ask for a tea and wait 20 mins! I then went to leave and was approached by a member of staff at the door telling me I had to pay £4 service charge!!! Absolute cheek! I argued this wasn’t in the small print, and she just said yes it is! Well sorry but there wasn’t much service had! Oh and the facilities need a good clean! It’s all dated!

    Wonderful views
Went for mid afternoon cocktails with friends. Great views over London, and relatively good value cocktails - i would suggest that the cocktails are (just) a few pounds more than a normal bar, but as entrance to V42 is free, then it's a price worth paying. You are sat at one 'table', which means you'll have to get up and have a wander around to get those all important photos of London landmarks. people didn't seem to mind when we were stood behind them taking photos though - everyone is there for the same reason ultimately!

I bought a voucher for my elderly parents to have afternoon tea there.

I booked online via their own website and supplied the code.

They failed and the company who sold the voucher very well known company to notify me they are closed.

There were no instruction on the reservation page about being closed and they excepted the reservation.

Two elderly people made their way there one with health conditions and were told at the door they were closed.

The staff member called up and told someone that they’ve just sent another couple away.

Very bad communication by them and the selling site.

I am disgusted by this.

You’d think being a self proclaimed prestige venue they’d be on top of every cancellation and notify all persons that booked they they were closed.

What a shambles.

Thankfully the selling site refunded my money.

I booked a table in the bar for my boyfriend's birthday. When we arrived we were greeted by a sullen looking woman who asked what we were there for. I told her we had a reservation and we were then told to follow an equally sullen looking man who, despite there being plenty of spaces, sat us right next to another couple. The chairs we were seated on didn't have any backs, so they were not very comfortable. We then asked a waitress if we could move to a place with chairs with backs on and she said yes - so clearly there was no need to seat us next to someone else with chairs with no backs...

We started moving our things and mid-move (clearly not the most convenient time), the waitress asked us if we wanted to order. We finished moving and I asked her for 5 more minutes. She responded rather rudely: "that's why I asked", and walked away.

Our new position had seats with backs, but the windows were filthy and the view of London was the furthest away from the City, so there was basically nothing to see.

I don't see why I should pay, at a minimum, £60 for a bottle of champagne if the staff are going to treat us like they wished we weren't there and if we can't see anything worth seeing in London.

We were so fed up we left without ordering.

My daughter treated me to afternoon tea here at Vertigo 42. As soon as we walked out of the lift we knew we’d made a mistake coming here. You walk down a cold dark corridor, past a dirty and tatty sofa into an area where you sit facing the view. The carpet was dirty, ripped and so were the chairs. The whole place looked like it needed a complete refurbishment. The staff that greeted us were friendly enough. My daughter had bought along my 9 year old granddaughter to join us. We had a voucher for our afternoon tea but just for 2 of us and were told that there wasn’t a child’s afternoon tea but we could order items from the menu for her. So we ordered her chicken strips, a chocolate brownie and a cup of tea. It was bought to her before our food arrived and we couldn’t believe the size of the portions. The chicken strips were in a tiny bowl and couldn’t have been more than half a chicken breast cut into tiny strips and they charge £14.50 for them....!! Her chocolate brownie was nothing special either and cost £8.50 and £3 for a weak cup of tea! This set the scene for our afternoon tea. We had a glass of fizz each which was fine but the food was abysmal. 3 bland and boring little finger sandwiches each, 2 tiny little tartlets and a small dry scone each which was definitely not home made. We werent asked what hot drinks we wanted and I had to go and find someone to order them. I had coffee which tasted like a cheap instant and my daughter had a cup of weak tea. Not once did any of the staff ask if we would like a refill of anything. So apart from the amazing view the whole experience was terrible and a waste of time and a lot of money. I would have complained on the day but my daughter had bought this for me as a birthday treat so I felt it would be inappropriate to raise my concerns in her presence as I didn’t want to seem ungrateful. Even at the end of this terrible visit we needed to use the loo which was again like the rest of the place, just awful. Shame on Vertigo 42 for taking so much money off of people and not meeting expectations. I wouldn’t ever want to come back and wouldn’t recommend it even with a cheap voucher deal, I’d rather go to Greggs than this place! Avoid at all costs.

Visited this restaurant for high tea. Approach to this 42nd floor restaurant is spooky and in case of fire escape may be hair raising and frightening. Ambiance in the restaurant is very good, views of London excellent but quality of high tea hopeless. Not worth the money even if bought on Groupon.

I treated my family to an afternoon tea in Dec 17 as I bought a voucher online. Firstly, it took them 15 min to serve us and bring us the cakes/sandwiches but we waited another 10 min for them to bring us tea, and only after I asked. The sandwiches were dried up as if they have been left out for a while and the cakes were hard as rock and tasted worst than any other cake i've eaten to date (although they did look nice in photos).
We took some nice photos of the view outside but left most of our food and as we walked out, the waiter by the door asked if we would give them tips/service charge....considering the service was terrible I was tempted to not pay but I did anyway. Looking back, they didn't deserve the discretionary service charge as I already wasted nearly £70 on the voucher. If you are wiling to pay that much for the view, then you'll be fine, but if you're expecting decent food in the price, then you'll be highly disappointed. Whoever prepared the food should be sacked!

Vertigo 42 portray themselves as this luxurious champagne bar with great views over the city, but they are far from it. The decor is so so basic, the furniture seems to be basic Ikea, chairs are uncomfortable, the atmosphere is non existent. The windows are all dirty which is unacceptable for a bar that pretends to have great views over London. Also, there are only a couple of tables that have good views, if you are unlucky enough to be seated where we were, you get to see almost nothing. Now for the drinks, for 14 a cocktail plus service charge (!!!!) I was expecting way more. It took the waitress like 15 minutes to bring our cocktails and they were nothing special really. Due to this delay, I refused to pay the service charge which is optional anyway. All in all, you are much better off going to Sushi Samba for example for great views of the city and for AMAZING atmosphere.

went yesterday for afternoon tea and glass of champagne-building is very impressive, grand entrance, posh seating, fast lift-lots of photo opportunities before you even reach the top. all seats face outwards and although theres not tons of room the views are soooo spectacular who cares? service was excellent and friendly. afternoon tea was good, but not as good as others ive had and glass of champagne was lovely though abit small,we also had a cocktal that was very tasty, though pricey at 14 quid each. but the views made up for everything-i would recommend this place, especially if you can get a two for one voucher-a great afternoon out! (remember to look out for the wording on the glass tops-tells you wot you can see-ie st pauls/london eye-i noticed this and told everyone!)

The 'experience' of having a drink and some nibbles while peering out across the London skyline seems appealing, especially for a nosey Londoner like me. How has it all changed?
Sadly, this experience did not live up to my expectations of how the experience is sold.
True, we arrived on a beautifully sunny day and the views were great.
For me to enjoy the views, other than Liverpool Street Station and the construction work, I had to go and stand and look over someone else's head. That was uncomfortable enough, especially while taking photos of the view while they were trying to have a seemingly private conversation!
If you do choose to go there you will want to be there as early as possible so as to hopefully get a decent view and not be plonked down the side near the toilets!.
There is nothing remarkable about sharing a cheese sandwich, a tuna sandwich and a couple of cakes while receiving some mediocre service.
I found the single glass of champagne very tasty.
Finally, you will also be required to pay for the 'service' before you leave! (£5.00)!!
Enjoy?

First of all the entrance. After receiving directions from two helpful reception staff we found it: around the side of the building. same entrance as "City Social' restaurant then along a rather dark corridor to the lifts.
We were about 30 minutes early but that wasn't a problem. The first thing that strikes you are the fantastic views over London. We had the Champagne Tea which we supplemented with a couple of glasses of wine. London 'Champagne Teas' can vary in quality and value but this was one of the best we've had. The champagne was decent and, after an appropriate interval, was accompanied by a plate of finger sandwiches, pastries, scones and cream. Our South African Chenin Blanc and New Zealand Sauvignon were pretty good and a fair price for a wine bar in this location.
Service throughout was attentive and pleasant. It really was a most pleasant experience and we have no hesitation in recommending it.
