About
A new destination for food, drinks and music in Hackney, London. Drawing on a Nordic aesthetic, Oslo is a significant new arrival in the dynamic and burgeoning area of Hackney Central, offering top quality food and drink with music in a unique space of a redeveloped railway station. Originally built by North London Railway Company, as a railway station in 1870, the two storey building was later used as a ticket office during World War II. It is the only surviving part of the original station which was closed in 1970's. Situated next door to Hackney Central on Amhurst Road, Oslo is a daytime hub to meet and eat, and a night time destination for socialising, eating and taking in the best of new music. The food menu places an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients and produce, including an impressive array of craft beers, ales and spirits from local suppliers. Food is served all day, from meetings through to late night get-togethers.

I came here for a gig just before lockdown and thought it was a pretty good live music venue, with a decent-sized first floor room which offers good sight-lines, a solid sound system and an interesting and varied roster of acts. Tickets are usually reasonably priced but can go quickly if a more established act is passing through. The place is let down a little bit by the bar downstairs, which to my mind sells overpriced drinks in a somewhat pretentious feeling environment. They also don't stock any cask ale, so I usually find myself heading elsewhere for drinks ahead of a gig here. The security can also be pretty blunt and at busier times, very disorganised. Overall though, I think it's a good gig venue and I hope they can make it through these tough times.

Giving this place a 5* for their excellent Covid measures. Saw a gig and it felt really safe, separate little tables for 2, app based table service, sold out but not crowded. Bar downstairs also good, with exceptional customer service.

I was wary about coming here as I assumed it was another overpriced hipster restaurant! How wrong good I be. No formalities, staff were dressed casually, which added to the laid back feel of the place, but were very attentive. Food was reasonably priced, and of top quality. I was too full for dessert! We stayed for a couple of hours and never once felt rushed or hurried. Located conveniently next to hackney central station. I’ll definitely be coming back.

Busy just for being new.

Plus side: decent beer, nice staff, decent food.

Down: beer expensive, staff not trained (they'll get better, probably), completely disorganised.

Big question: who designed this place? Fits the wholly unoriginal mould for real/craft ale bars with exposed metal and distressed/reclaimed timber, 'interesting' fixtures and fittings - so old and unoriginal. Was someone paid for this?

Bar stools attached to bar; why? That doesn't work.

Gents toilet - the urinal goes right up to the door, door opens inwards, onto anyone pissing there. Couldn't anyone work that out?

So popular but such a mess. Says a lot about the patrons, to be honest.

Might get better…

We booked a table for 8.30, we had a reasonable diner, but the staff couldn't speak much english and the music was overpowering. I ordered a burger and it was cold. We then searched for a our waiter who was nowhere to be seen, eventually we found a waitress who we tried to order desert with an hour later who told us we couldn't order desert as it was too late. Obviously if you make a dinner reservation you expect to receive full service!!! To top it off, my friends bag was stolen from our table, at which point we had reported this too the bar who said they couldn't do anything until the morning (helpful) and then then the female bouncer was a massive c*** and tried to throw us off the outdoor premises whilst were were reporting the stolen bag to the police. All of the security / bouncer staff at the evening were completely patronising and rude. The only thing which made this night reasonable was the company which I brought, otherwise, rubbish service, and even worse/ irate(for no reason/the male bouncers had to take her away.) security. DO NOT BOTHER GOING HERE.

My friend and I came to Oslo for a weeknight gig. While waiting for it to start we had a drink at the bar and then chose to eat something. The staff were rude and patronising, constantly moving us along and calling is 'darling' with a look of apologetic superiority. When we were eventually seated, the staff looked on us benignly as if we should be eternally grateful to be in such a fabulously cool venue. They took close to an hour to bring us a bowl of substandard chips. When we asked for the bill, they simply declared that it was £4 and walked off.

The doormen made us walk around a maze to get up to the actual musical area of the place. There was nobody queuing and they had just opened the way for someone else. I suppose these cool 'Hackneyites' get a kick out of making mere mortals do their bidding.

The woman from the cloakroom danced around singling to herself and smiling at us while we waited 10 minutes to have her take out coats. When she eventually took our coats and our £10, she declared that she couldn't open the till to give us change. Somehow she couldn't return our money either.

Nobody knew where the loo was. We were sent up and down the stairs 4 times. It's no wonder they didn't know; it's the best hidden toilet in Europe. Getting out of it was even harder as their fabulously alternative decor meant that they included several pointless mirrors in places that made you feel like you were lost in an amusement park.

As I am writing this review, I am sitting on the freezing cold staircase of Oslo in trendy Hackney. Once the gig is over, I will turn my back on this paragon of mediocrity and never return.

Disappointing and disgraceful service!

Having read the restaurant's web site I was encouraged to book a table for two during a Friday lunch time period at 1pm.

When we arrived I was surprised to find the place deserted but thought nothing of it!

We ordered from the day's menu: grilled sea bass and seaweed battered cod.

After forty minutes the sea bass turned up half cooked (it had not been grilled) and the cod together with the horseradish was tipped over onto the table.......service was simply non existent.

My aim was to support this restaurant by patronising it but I have to draw the line!!

Nice open and interesting space with restaurant and bar. The chicken burger with Thai slaw and chips was really great. The burger was also at a discount.

We visited recently for a quiet coffee, desert and liqueur on a Sunday afternoon. All good for three of our party but for me a less enjoyable experience.

We were served by the supervisor and I asked for a Cointreau, only to be told that they had some but couldn't sell me any as "no button on the till". No amount of reasoning would change her mind.

To add to the annoyance, the deserts arrived quickly but each coffee took ages, such that we had finished deserts by the time the last tepid latte arrived.

I don't understand why the Cointreau couldn't have just been rung up at the same price as the other drinks or better still been given free as good will gesture.

Extremely lacking in any customer service focus.

This was my first and probably last visit.
