I live in Brixton and had to be informed by a North London lass about a special event that occurs each month at Upstairs at the Ritzy...ReggaeOke!!
What an experience......if was fun from start to finish. The compare ..a very likable, engaging young lady kicked it off and got the ball rolling. I laughed all night.....so much fun and jokes.
The WORTHY runner up and winner were brilliant in my mind. They gave it as good as they could and engaged the crowd all the way. Well done to you both for feeling no shame or embarrassment. I would pay to see you both again.
If you have nothing to do on a Sunday evening and love Reggae music, come along and support this event. Its worth it!! Its very reasonable at £6. Next date is 21st December....see what you can bring to the mike!!

We had a brilliant night of laughter and nostalgia. Not much variety so far as drinks are and what is there is expensive for a glass of supermarket wine. The snacks are not really worth a mention. Queuing to get into the Upstairs be prepared for a longish wait. Having to go up and down the stairs to buy drinks got a little dangerous toward the end of the evening.
Well worth a visit and night out in Brixton.

Standing room only at Reggaeoke, a monthly event on the first Saturday of each month upstairs at the Ritzy. Look past the flight of stairs from the entrance and bar area, to the actual karaoke room and prime your pipes ready for a sing song. Choose from reggae, soca, dancehall etc.
I really can't understand why the dog always wins 'Britain's Got Talent'; because there was so much talent in the room. Linda rocked Janet Kay's "Silly Games" and even birthday boy Winston did a half decent version of Bob's "Natural Mystic".
I confess that we, 'the Wembley Massive,' totally murdered 'Life (is what you make it)'. We just couldn't get our verbal gymnastics on point to match all those words on the screen. Believe me, I wasn't the only one gazing at the screen thinking 'there's no way those are the words to this song' - but that's the joys of karaoke! We couldn't wait to get back up there to assault the ears of willing listeners, who sang with us and laughed at us.
Be warned, go early. Doors open at 8pm and people are queuing beforehand, singing starts at 9pm and goes on until late. £8 booked in advance online or £10 on the door. Its a small space with limited seating and it gets hot, but there's a external terrace off the room for the smokers and anyone needing to cool down. Alcohol and food also available.
Good fun. Will go again. Brixton, be warned!

More intimate setting upstairs
Small bar where you can order food and also get drinks, crisps and other snacks.
Staff overall where friendly and the environment was laid back and comfortable

I was following an independent singer that would have performed that night at the Ritzy.
The bar is upstairs but the stage can be reached walking further up from the bar; they have a terrace (presumably for smokers) and two tall tables in the back, near the stage there are 4-5 tables and a sofa, plus a more private table next to the stairs.
It's quite cosy, it doesn't seem to accommodate many people but the sound system is of good quality, plus it's not too loud.
Quirky host of the night that required silence during performances (which is reasonable for a normal gig, a bit less for such a small place where chatting is actually advisable) but, other than that, a very relaxed ambience where you can enjoy independent music without big crowds. I loved the intimate atmosphere, with many people keen to have a chat with strangers and share alternative music...
By the way, they also have a decent menu (orders downstairs at the bar, served wherever you're sitting), I didn't order anything but prices are reasonable.

The Upstairs bar is often quieter than downstairs at busy times, and you can even buy your cinema tickets from up there. There are lots of tables, a balcony with a view of Windrush Square, a good range of drinks on offer, and a reasonably priced food menu. Almost every evening there is an event on, ranging from board gaming to music to open mic to the film quiz - you can just turn up and be sure of a good time. Frankly, this place is the single best thing in the whole of Brixton.

Drinks not too overpriced, often live music and a nice, chatty atmosphere - perfect for a few drinks with friends!

I adore this cinema, and this upstair bar is another wonderful addition to this great place. What's better than coming upstairs after watching a movie and enjoy a nice drink? The atmosphere is really pleasant.

Great place to have a drink before or after a movie. The bar upstairs is very cosy and the staff very friendly. The drinks are good and if you're a member of the ritzy you will get also a discount on them.
