Not enough staff at the Camden branch, over worked and stressed. We've been here before when it wa better service. Food is quite good, when you can get to it

Camden branch leaving party
Jul 2016 • Business
If you live or work in Camden with its plethora of bars, it's really worth looking into this local branch of the Grand Union chain. The customer service is the best in any of these pub/ diners, and how the keep it so friendly and personal when there is such a buzzy atmosphere is a clear sign of good management and focus. We had a great leaving do for a member of my team. The discount wristbands were a good idea, and nothing was too much trouble for what was probably a slightly rowdy group of people working in housing. The skittles and crisps were welcome and thanks so much for the complimentary Prosecco

the joke of a place
Apr 2016 • Friends
this place is run by people that put profit against customer service, you had to queue at the bar for an average of 30 minutes and when you got there the two members of staff were doing shots together. they were understaffed but they should not have shown these behaviours. This place is in a prime location and deserves to be better

Family 21st - turned out to be a DISASTER !!!!!
Apr 2016 • Friends
3 months ago I had booked and paid for 2 beach huts! on the morning of my daughter 21st party they emailed her to say there was a problem !! double booked !! and we had to accept 1. After arriving around 3 o'clock in the afternoon with my daughter, family and friends. I got a phone call around 6 o'clock to say her brother, my son had been stopped at the door and refused entrance because when asked to be searched some receipts fell out of his pockets and the doorman said they were thrown at him ??? This was definitely not the case. My son obviously apologised just to make the peace and hopefully be allowed entrance, this was the last thing he wanted to happen. Instead they were rude! and intimidating. I tried to resolve the situation and explain we were here for my daughters 21st party, it was her brother and can assure them we weren't here to cause any trouble it was a family party. I then asked to speak to the manager, but unfortunately he had the same rudeness and tbh wouldn't even listen. That left us no choice, one brother in the venue and the other one being victimised ! We all left the venue with a very upset daughter. The worse thing about this was friends and family who were invited were travelling to the venue and we struggled to contact everyone to notify them of what had happened. Most of them were coming from the Surrey area, so when they did arrive I paid for taxi's to get everyone back. NEVER EVER AGAIN WOULD I COME HERE.

Great food, shame about the service.

We visited the bar next to the Imperial war museum. Excellent location for us. First impressions very good with comfy sofas and tables to eat at.

We were looking forward to our cocktails but were told we would have to wait 10 minutes. However they agreed to make them for us then came over and took the drinks order from the rest of our group (there were only 5 of us) and our food order. 1 drink was forgotten completely and another one was wrong (tap water not bottled as asked for). That said, our cocktails were very nice and we ordered a second.

A table was slowly cleared so we asked to move onto it to eat but again we were told to wait. Our food arrived and one order was wrong (BLT instead of veg stack). We asked for some garlic mayo but they had to be reminded to bring it - we also never got our second cocktail order. Thankfully the food was delicious and my friend soon got her veg stack.

We asked for the bill - the only thing to arrive promptly- and were shocked to find service charge included! However they had failed to add on our cocktails, a beer and the right meal we ordered. Their shocking service saved us approximately £16!

Brilliant evening
Jan 2016 • Family
Went to the Paddington Grand Union Bar for a birthday surprise last night and had a great evening. Very warmly greeted when we got there by Jade and when expressing a preference for a 'booth' table, were accommodated straight away. As my daughter and I are both gluten free, we requested an allergens menu which was immediately brought to us. Happy hour is from 4 until 8 and cocktails that are normally £9 each go down to £5. Definitely recommend the margharita and bellini. Our waitress Ilyana deserves a special mention for being incredibly friendly and helpful as our only criticism of the restaurant is its lack of gluten free food. She sorted out a bunless burger without chips for my daughter and I had the veggie stack with aubergine, tomato and goats cheese. The nachos looked amazing but unfortunately the tortilla chips have gluten in - very easy to source these without gluten so may GUB can look at this and also cooking the fries in non-contaminated oil? My partner was very pleased with his fully loaded burger and the choice of fries - skinny, crinkly or sweet potato. Overall, the whole place has the feel of a very upmarket TGI Friday's but without being overpriced or tacky. Definitely worth a visit for drinks and / or a meal. We will be returning very soon!

Did exactly what they said they would. Fun vibes and great pizza
Aug 2015 • Friends
Took group of 22 people there for drinks and pizza (very good) after an earlier evening event. Phoned week ahead and they were very responsive and efficient in taking order, charged only £25 deposit. On arrival they had reserved area as promised and brought over wine and pizza. All worked very well. They didn't actually serve us - we did that ourselves but all in all exactly what we had asked for. Bill came up exactly right with NO service charge. So we added our own tip. Great value. Disco was also really good and we could still chat even though we were right next to it.

When its good its good but when its bad its BAD
Jul 2015 • Friends
We work around the corner from the Chancery Lane branch and had gotten into the habit of stopping in here for a nice but cheap lunch treat a couple of times a fortnight. When there is a skeleton staff with say one barman hanging around the service is usually good as they are a pleasant, friendly bunch.

Unfortunately we've all been massively put off by our last visit when service was generally very slow and a new staff member messed up our order...It wasn't so much by the poor guy's initial screw up as by how it was managed. A bunch of the guys had asked if they could have curly fries/ sweet potato fries etc *instead* of chips with their burger. The poor guy wrote these requests down as extra sides and no-one in the kitchen twigged it. We ended up getting an insane amount of chips delivered and we did say that we'd been trying to order substitutions and we didn't want them all but there was no stopping the relentless tide of potato-based dishes. That in itself wasn't what put us off though - what really got us was when the manager was really picky about our student cards and we were charged for all the extra fries. By the time we'd managed to get enough attention to ask for a bill it was already past the end of our lunch hour. At that point the manager insisted on separating the student card holders from the non-holders so that no-one extra got a discount on the meal they hadn't fully ordered. This was especially fun since a couple of people had had to duck off quickly to go to meetings they were running late for leaving their money with others to pay. A couple of us had to pay once with student cards and then a second time on behalf of friends. But thank god the complicated payment system meant the Grand Union didn't loose a couple of extra quid to people who actually do have student cards but just hadn't brought them.

My advice? If its quiet go in, it'll be a nice lunch break. If there is more than one staff member visible run for it...somehow that will negatively impact the lunch service.
