schnitzel, wurst & free beer
Jan 2020 • Family
Dined at Zeitgeist London twice during our brief stay in London. It was 2 blocks from our vauxhall apartment on our walking route to the river Thames east bank. The Jager schnitzel, bangers and mash, bratwurst and pizza were very good and saturday and sunday a free pint was included with each meal. The servers were very friendly and helpful. I definitely recommend giving
Zeitgeist London a visit when in London.

The Beer was nice and the food was good. What let things down was the Bar Staff Service. My friend had booked a table, but this seemed to cause a problem when we arrived a bit early. The Barmaid was very unwelcoming and for me showed very poor customer service.
I asked for information about their different drinks but this was met with virtual silence. I was expecting someone who would be passionate and knowledgeable about the different drinks on sale. We were later served by a younger Barman who was much better.

So much beer!

Came here for a friends birthday, arrived at 4pm left at closing. I made sure to try a different beer each time, everyone a winner. We also had a couple of German meat platters which I highly recommend. Pub was busy but wasn’t an issue getting a drink.

When you just get a hankering for Wurst...

It’s Wednesday, you’re feeling too lazy to cook, don’t fancy a takeaway despite numerous offers delivered to the usual takeaway apps so instead, you pop out the house and wander down the toad to zeitgeist. Or at least I do cos I indeed love down the road.

Heavy bias here - I love German food, German beer and living in Vauxhall satisfies those cravings. Zeitgeist is about ten minutes walk from Vauxhall and Oval tube stations, not quite off the beat and track but a bit of a schlep. A former Victoria pub, the Jolly Gardeners, this is where Chaplin used to perform before he went to the States.

Pub has many of the original Victorian features but everything is painted black - traps the heat, particularly in winter. And has, like several German themed pubs/bars, an alpine ski lodge back area, out in what was the beer garden.

Drinks - spoiled for choice. About twenty on tap and many bottled beers, lagers etc. Menus on each table detail them all but the staff are pretty knowledgable.

Food - great choice of wurst, schnitzel, flammkuchen and other choice items. Great stuff, manageable portions and delivered swiftly.

Negatives - popular venue, especially when sports on tv. So if crowds aren’t your thing, time it well.

Always worth a visit.

Have been here a couple of times. It’s an nice old pub with German specialties. Good price and quality. Would recommend it if you don’t feel going out for fancy food but just a chill night.

They’re just not bothered!

As part of our Christmas works do we went here. On arrival the place was packed as there was a party in one side of the bar. Undeterred we tried to find the table we had booked, it was found right next to the door but occupied. After asking the staff to do their job they reluctantly agreed. Finally we had a seat.

Now to get a drink, our boss kindly got a round in. The bar system is awful, one member of bar staff who seems to be dedicated to us was not supported by her colleagues. We were offered service three times but we said we were being served the staff walked off. We suggested that the help their colleague but no they’d rather drag things out.

Now getting food, oh my days, our direction was for each of us to order at the bar individually. This appeared ridiculous given how busy the place was. We decided to consolidate our order as a group, you know how a waiter would. Order complete we headed to the bar only to be told that we would have to wait until 2000 for the kitchen to be available, it was 1830. One of our party managed to find the one member of staff who cared and our order was taken. When I say taken I mean that the order we put together was texted to the waiter.

Anyway, the food is very nice and if you like German food it’s brilliant. The service is terrible. I won’t go back or recommend it.

An interesting fact though is that the pub was used in Snatch. I think Bricktop would have a few words to say, “Do you know what nemesis is?”

Visited here with my 2 daughters after visiting Zip now. A great range of German beers and food was on offer, didn't know which to choose. Food was plentiful and served quickly and beers were good. Try it if you fancy something different in London.

German Beer Paradise in London
May 2018 • Solo
Zeitgeist is located on Black Prince Road in between Vauxhall & Lambeth bridges. Slightly of centre but well worth a visit. Been to this bar on numerous occasions when in London. Serves a wide selection of German & international beers on tap & in bottles as well other non/alcoholic drinks. Lots of choice to suit all tastes. Food is also available. Can be very busy at times. Sport including Premier League & Bundesliga football is often screened. The bar team are genuinely friendly & helpful. Feels authentically German in the British capital. Card / contactless payments accepted. Nearest tube is Vauxhall. I often get the 344 bus to Salamanca Street then walk for a few minutes up Black Prince Road. Definitely one of my favourite bars in London.

Having lived in Germany this pub was too close to our hotel not to make a visit. It was a good choice too. A great range of main and regional German beers. The bar staff even managed to find me some kellerbier. The food menu was good too with a good range to choose from. The bar staff were excellent and clearly worked hard. It was good to see proper German tv too, even if it was football. Well worth a visit!

A great blend of German food with a pub dining experience.

Having lived in Germany for many years, my wife and I stopped in for an ironic, good German dinner while visiting London because we missed it. The menu and beer selection were diverse and the food was fairly authentic and well prepared. The service was friendly but we had to go up to the bar to order everything, rather than having someone come to our table. Overall, I would recommend going to a regular British pub for pub food if you are in London, unless, like us, you are specifically dying for a German meal. Good experience though!!
