Neighborhood: St. James's
Perennially fashionable since the days of Henry VIII, the aristocratic “Clubland” of St James's is a premier destination for high end craft and bespoke design. Here you’ll lose count of the Royal Warrants (which indicate that the Royal Family patronizes the establishment) seen in shop front windows, even during a short stroll to bordering Green Park or St James’s Park. With the brightly lit and constantly buzzing junction of Piccadilly Circus at its northeast corner and none of Central London too far away, this is an surprisingly central and accessible part of town, especially given its prosperous demeanor.

This Cheesemonger has the best cheeses. I always buy cheese when I am in London, but as I live Dover I get the cheese to be forwarded to me. I love a particular cheese and on the first occasion they sent it to me in a way I expected it to arrive. First I rang, gave all my details, bank, email, telephone number, and the next thing I get a receipt for the cheese, then I get information as to when the item would be delivered - and later a rough time it will arrive. The box arrives with the cheese inside, packed with 2 sets of ice cold items , and the box has an insulation on all four sides. The item arrives and it is perfect. But, after several attempts ... now I get no receipt (I have to ask the Bank what the cost was which they sent it to me on e-mail), also now I dont get any e-mail from the courier company, or any text as to a time when it arrives (the courier company say they never got any details from Paxton & Whitfield although I always give it to them) Today, after calling the store they tell me when the cheese will arrive, and when it does, there is NO top cover inside the box and only one ice pack is in it all melted. It is such a shame that a good Cheesemonger allows the forwarding now where you get no receipt for the sale, you get no information from the courier & you have to call to ask when it will arrive, and when it arrives the top insulation top has been left and only one ice block is with the cheese which is all melted. I wonder if I will ever order cheese again as the people packing the cheese, or the person sending receipts, and informing the courier all the proper details are NOT what they previously did.

We visit this fabulous cheese shop every time we visit London. We continue to try different tasty cheeses each time, there are so many to try & buy. They don’t just sells cheese there are scotch eggs, pork pies, cheese plates & boards & cheese knives. Free tastings & the staff are always very friendly & helpful.

Although a patron of P&W for many years, I am unlikely to be going back anytime soon. On Thursday last I went to buy some cheese, the man serving was clueless, utterly clueless. He put his hands all over the cheese (disgusting), didn't know the difference between a pound and a kilogramme, and attempted to palm me off with the worst cuts. The place has been steadily going down hill for years now but it seems to have hit an all time low.

I echo the other reviewer who wrote the P&W has been steadily going downhill for years. Maybe it started when the got a royal warrant, if in fact they have one. This has always been a bit precious, self-important and pricey, but you could usually expect a great selection, more or less friendly attention and it was a nice place to visit while on Jermyn Street. The selection, though large, has shrunk to make room for lots of priceless "accessories" like Ye Olde Cheeseboard.
I visited last Sunday for the first time in a few months. The place was empty but one hardly felt welcome. The staff was somewhere between snotty and snooty in attitude as they dismissed my question about seasonal Vacherin seemingly because I am a idiot not to know the season ends in April, not May. I knew not to ask about Wensleydale cheese with fruit in it, as I had previously on other visits been instructed that they do not carry anything so plebeian. However, I thought it was safe to ask about St Agur, but no it wasn't. I tried a few interesting cheeses £33 a kilo and walked out having spent a lot. This was not exactly like the famous Monty python sketch about visiting the cheese shop, but close enough to make me never go back.
(Years ago, as it started to slip noticeably from its origins, it was normal to be served by a group of Canadians who, when you wanted to have fun, you could ask where they were from "in the States," because it really worked them up to be confused with Americans. But maybe that's just my sense of humor.)
Fortunately, there are several much, much better alternatives. I am now going to stick with the Rappon Stores, particularly the one in Pimlico, where the selection is better and the staff are actually friendly and helpful. There is also the famous Neal's Yard (Covent Garden) and the excellent store off of Marylbone High Street, the name of which I forget, all of which are infinitely better than the poor excuse for a tourist trap that is now Paxton & Whitfield. Sorry I couldn't be nice, because I really loved this place years ago, but it's my duty as a reviewer to be honest. Anyway, they were not particularly nice to me and my friend, so it's all in keeping.

This is the best cheese shop I have ever visited. Amazingly educated staff and choice. We picked our selection and it was shipped back home two days later. Brilliant service and a connection we are so pleased we made.

Behind Fortnum & Mason's on Jermyn Street, this little shop has been selling cheese since 1797!
The smell on entering the place is simply yummy (if you like cheese!).
As a self confessed foody, I love shopping in places like this for a few little treats. The Cornish Yard was particularly delicious!

I visited this cheesemonger while in Bath. If you like cheese you'll love this place. It's a small shop but the cheese selections are outstanding. Your tastebuds kick in the moment you walk in the door. yes it smells that good! I bought several different varities and had them with crusty bread and fruit for dinner. Thw staff was most helpful and very patient (hard to choose). well worth the stop

I wrote a rude review last year - cheese great but vast amount of polystyrene packaging . We were given another pack of wonderful cheese this Xmas. I’m really glad to report that the packaging is now based on wool and biodegradable plastic. Thanks!

My wife and I visited the Paxton & Whitfield in Jermyn Street at the weekend. We were fortunate enough to sample a range of unique and rare cheese’s. We were fortunate to be educated by Kate, whose cheese knowledge was incredible and passion for cheese was palpable. The whole experience was unique and I highly recommend a visit as you will learn to love some new cheeses!

On a jaunt through Mayfair, we stopped in at Paxton and Whitfield, having heard about it for years. It is a truly delightful, small shop, with its cheeses and other wares beautifully presented. Its historic facade leads to a sympathetically similar interior. Friendly customer service, beautiful and delicious cheeses. Crackers, jams (?) and other sundries round out its offerings. Truly an institution in Mayfair, and not to be missed!
