Day out in London visiting some notable sites, visited Paxton & Whitfield`s cheese shop in Jermyn shop, what a shop, London`s oldest cheese shop and by far the best, if you are in the area don`t miss it, you do not need to like cheese to appreciate the shop

If you are a true lover of cheeses, then Paxton & Whitfield is where you need to be to experience the best cheeses that London has to offer. They currently hold two royal warrants from both the Prince of Wales and Queen Elizabeth II, and are one of the oldest cheesemongers in England - being established in the 1740's. Definitely... More

If you like cheese then go here. It's really that simple. This is where you get proper cheese, not vacuum-packed-devoid-of-any-real-taste-supermarket-cheese. You can smell it on the street, and inside is a cheese-lovers heaven. I love the fact that the staff are so knowledgeable about it all - the makers, the stories behind the names, the history. And they make great... More

I echo the other reviewer who wrote the P&W has been steadily going downhill for years. Maybe it started when the got a royal warrant, if in fact they have one. This has always been a bit precious, self-important and pricey, but you could usually expect a great selection, more or less friendly attention and it was a nice place... More

So many cheeses (non-stinky, too) at this, as I now understand it, near legendary cheesemongers (they were instrumental in debuting and then establishing Stilton among the great cheeses of England!). The helpful guidance of the P&W staff person—and the ample tastes he allowed me of the varieties offered—got me down to three luscious cheeses. Yes, one was a great, blue... More

I often visit London for one reason or another, and I am drawn to Paxton and Whitfield. I'll tell you why. I love cheese, and the finest cheeses are to be found here. I mean of the highest quality and kept beautifully. Admittedly some of them are at rather large prices, but you wont be disappointed at the quality. I... More

We love dropping in here after a day of sightseeing! It's near Piccadilly on Jermyn St. It's easy to find (follow your nose), and a delight for all cheese lovers. You can sample before you buy and stock up on a few cheese related gifts - or just a couple of items to help you enjoy your cheese on a... More

If you like cheese this place will draw you in as a temple . But it is posh and you do pay a high price for its excellent cheeses. Definately try before you buy though as bad choices can prove expensive but good choices are always cheap

A lovely place to visit to buy excellent cheese but also good for cheese related gifts. I particularly like their fruit compotes for example pear and vanilla which make lovely gifts.

Staying in St. James's

Neighborhood Profile
St. James's
Perennially fashionable since the days of Henry VIII, the aristocratic “Clubland” of St James's is a premier destination for high end craft and bespoke design. Here you’ll lose count of the Royal Warrants (which indicate that the Royal Family patronizes the establishment) seen in shop front windows, even during a short stroll to bordering Green Park or St James’s Park. With the brightly lit and constantly buzzing junction of Piccadilly Circus at its northeast corner and none of Central London too far away, this is an surprisingly central and accessible part of town, especially given its prosperous demeanor.
