Neighborhood: Bloomsbury
Snuggly nestled within Central London is academic and leafy Bloomsbury, an area that boasts walking distance access to many of London's most popular attractions. It is also home to some of Britain's most celebrated museums, including the must-see British Museum. Despite an understandable popularity with students, tourists and day trippers, vast sections of Bloomsbury retain a quiet, residential feel year round and throughout the week.

Classic neighbourhood pub
Nov 2021
Classic pub right around the corner. Went for mid-afternoon break - drinks and snacks. They didn't have the red wine ordered from the menu (provided a decent substitute) and chips took over 25 minutes to arrive. At that time of day, not at all crowded and a pleasant place to relax.

Beautiful old pub, with lots of original features.
Welcoming staff, and a handy place for a few drinks.

Dickens Was Here (But he paid a lot less for his beer)
Sep 2020
The place that was Charles Dickens' local when he lived down the road at 48 Doughty Street, where he wrote the immortal "Oliver Twist" between 1837 and 1839.
There are three usable tables outside and a small outside yard at the back.
It's a classic Victorian boozer, pretty much in its original state, with the button-back leather benches, etched glass "snob screens" over the bar and a small "snug" that would hold your maximum of six.
People were complaining about slow service on the food and two pints cost a breathtaking £11+, but it's worth stopping in to drink in the atmosphere.

Hi there. Thanks so much for this lovely review. Clearly you're someone who loves their Victorian culture so very glad we were able to capture some of that spirit. Due to Covid guidelines the food doesn't come out quite as quickly as it used to but rest assured it's still made with the same amazing care and quality Hope to see you again soon! Pete

Great Sunday Roast
Feb 2020
Walked past this pub by accident and was looking to have Sunday Lunch. We was not disappointed, we ordered our lunch and was greeted by a lovely lady called Aura. She made us feel very welcome and was very attentive.

A pint with Dickens
Feb 2020
Terrific old boozer with lots of its Victorian original decor & fittings (including the frosted glass “posh screens” so the clientele didn’t have to see the bar staff) really popular with Dickens, Ted Hughes etc (though not at the same time) sells Young’s beers, too !

Hi Kevin, great to hear you enjoyed seeing our "posh screens". They are a very rare find in London. We our very proud of our Dickensian and Victorian history. Hope to see you again soon, cheers, Lee.

Slowest service ever
Jan 2020 • Business
Worlds slowest service. Literally still at the bar waiting. They have three staff each doing one order at a time and taking their sweet ass time doing it. Spent £160 on an open tab and can't get a round for my life

Hi, Ryan! Thanks for taking the time to let us know about your experience with us. I am so disappointed to hear, the guys were not fast enough behind the bar. I will look in to who was working and make sure to change the habits behind the bar. Thank you again for your review. Every feedback matters to us. Kind regards, Aura

Awesome pub
Jan 2020 • Couples
We lucked out with this one. Bartender was so friendly and helpful. She explained the difference between cask ale and tap ale, in detail. Feels like a real neighborhood pub. I think we were the only tourists. Patrons also were friendly. Food was good. I would just advise to also check the smaller menus on the table as it seems they had food options that weren't listed on the larger laminated menus?

Disgustingly dreadful Christmas lunch
Dec 2019 • Couples
We booked months in advance for a table of 6 even preordered and paid for our meals to arrive on the day asking to squeeze with 2 small tables and seating for 5. After asking politely, we manage to get 3 small tables to sit the 6 of us. Food was horrible, tasted as though it was cooked when we purchased it months earlier. It was bland, dry, potatoes were rotten (just look at the photo, potatoes are not meant to be black inside!), meats were of low quality but charged an exceptionally high price! The gravy was so watery and tasteless that even the server laughed when she was placing them down on the table as most of the “gravy” sloshed on the floor. Service was poor. The only thing that tasted ok was the eggnog. We paid AUD$140 per head! An insane amount for such poor food. We literally left hungry, left the plates overflowing with food back to their kitchen untouched for the most of it. Definitely ruined our Christmas Day. It was clear to the servers that we did not enjoy our meal however no apology or restitution was offered. Extremely disappointing.

disappointed
Jan 2020
Used to work here in the 70's. Lovely old pub. Not as sparkly as it used to be but still worth a visit for historical fittings. Pork belly was fine but fish pie was awful had a weird tang to it. I think it was probably off. Could not eat it. Just ate the mash and cabbage. Young barmaid not concerned at all, not even "I am sorry to hear you did not enjoy your meal". we had to ask her to tell the kitchen staff. She is letting the pub down. Had there been any concern at all, this review would have more stars. If the managers bother to read reviews - there is a training issue!

Hi, Drach56. Thanks for taking the time to let us know about your experience in our pub. I am very disappointed to hear you did not enjoy your fish pie, but let me assure you, it could not have been off, as a completely new batch of them was made just that morning. However, it does not mean, the waitress on the day should have not reacted to your complaint on the date. As she is a new staff member with us, i will be making sure to re-train her on customer service and make sure this does not happen again. Regards, Aura
