Nature Reserve in the grounds of an 800 year old church
Dec 2019
This was not what we were expecting, it's actually in the grounds of an 800 year old church. The church is beautiful with large, left to nature grounds. Not sure if it's the time we went, but we only saw a couple of Squirrels and heard birds, but it was still very interesting to walk around all the graves and see the history.

Mini-beast search with grandchildren
May 2017 • Family
We enjoyed our first visit with grandchildren aged two and five. Old Cemeteries provide a great combination of history and nature and the Church is a nice focal point. The Visitor Centre wasn't open and a map of site and interpretation boards would be helpful.
We will return on a sunnier day.

It's a graveyard.

Not sure what to add other than the fact that this is a resting place for the dead. Perhaps it gains more appeal in the summer months? In any case, there are much nicer green spaces in this part of London.

Beautiful little hideout
Feb 2017 • Friends
Beautiful little hideout in the middle of east London, full of history if you know where to look, from the graves of victims a of the Titanic to monuments damaged by the blitz and WW1 and WW2 stones. St Mary Magdalene church stands in the center of the Nature Reserve and was built by the Normans, the surrounding area has been used to bury the dead since Roman times. When walking around you get a real feel for London history, and a sense of peace and quiet not often found in east London, interrupted only by the bird song.

Nice for grave spotting
Aug 2016 • Friends
Very, very green. You find a lot of bugs in there as I found a grasshopper and it's a really good place to go graves spotting as a lot are hiding in the bushes and under trees. Also it's free.

Local Reserve definitely worth visiting
May 2012 • Solo
East Ham Nature Reserve is a small (6 acre) reserve in Newham, London. It has a basic visitors centre mostly used for children's activities, but is also open on weekdays providing free and selling books and leaflets, as well as featuring a small display. The reserve overall is well looked after, litter is a bit of a problem but is generally well controlled. Many birds can be seen trhoughout the year include Jays, Chiff chaffs, Willow warblers, Kestrels, Sparrowhawks, Greater spotted and Green woodpeckers, and the occasional woodcock or owl. Bats are also present but are difficult to see, and sadly bat walks are no longer organised. A great place for locals or those in the area 9and nice for me walking home from school), but not large enough for a full day trip.
