Refurbishment Inadequate for Islington Needs
Aug 2017 • Solo
Despite the takeover of Better I have not seen much improvement other than the odd cosmetic touch. The current works will marginally improve things for gym/class goers but not sufficiently to cope with the number of local residents who frequent the place. Swimmers will continue to face the same problems of overcrowding, training lanes reduced to allow for schools and suspect water quality. Clearly funding was an issue because it should have been knocked down and re-built along the lines of Clissold Leisure Centre to bring it into the 21st century. As to the cleanliness of the changing rooms... what a disgrace. I have witnessed shower drains blocked with the same hair for a week at a time. The ceiling is mouldy and falling down in places and all sorts of unhygienic rubbish can be found littering the floors. The cleaners are not cleaners but staff who think dragging a mop around the floor is sufficient. The staff also need lessons in good customer service, after all this is a business Better and we are paying customers.

Appalling staff on reception
Aug 2017 • Solo
Since "Better" took over the building may look better but the staff on reception have taken a definite downward turn. They are ignorant, rude jobsworths. Britannia Leisure Centre has fewer frills, but the staff are inviting and friendly

Things are improving...
Aug 2017 • Family
Since Better took over this centre things have definitely improved. They have built a new entrance/reception, updated the pool area and are currently building a new gym extension. They have yet to do anything to the changing rooms but hopefully soon as they are in dire need of upgrading...

It is definitely cleaner than it used to be!

The swimming instructors are well trained and really great with the kids. The lifeguards are more focused on the job now. I've been taking my eldest to swimmings lessons here for a few years now and it used to bug me watching the lifeguards chatting away to each other not even glancing at the pool but recently they have really got their act together: checking that any children going in the free lane part of the big pool can actually swim. Walking up and down with those sticks eyes on the pool...

I don't use the gym so can't comment, however the bit I can see from the pool (with running machines) looks clean and well maintained.

I hope they keep on improving in all areas as it is becoming a great place to go to...

Heard on leaving the pool one day: elderly swimmer talking to lifeguard - "do you swim?". Answer : No.
Make of that what you will

Good for a dip
Nov 2014 • Solo
If you aren't bothered about mod cons and fancy gyms like me, a relaxing dip in the local Highbury Pool is perfection. Avoid school periods and any time after 5:30 and you'll have peace and quiet.

Good pool, bad service and changing rooms
Aug 2012 • Solo
What's good: nice location nestled in Highbury Fields near to lots of transport options. It's got a gym, a sauna, a training pool and a 25m pool. What's bad: It can get overcrowded (choose your time carefully, late at night 9pm plus is good), the staff are all quite young and seem to find customers a real inconvenience. The ugly: the changing rooms. Flipflops are a must if you don't want to pick up something nasty. The floors in the changing rooms are caked in hairs, black blobs, wrappers, plasters and more. On the last occasion I went there was a bloody cotton bud and cream on the floor. An attendant made a half hearted attempt to clean up but stopped way short. Cleaning products like mops were left out by the showers - which weren't very clean. Aquaterra, who run this pool on behalf of Islington Council, risk loosing this and others to GLL who will be running the reopened Ironmonger Row Baths. And not without reason on the evidence of Highbury Pool.

Swimming lessons
I take my son here for swimming lessons every Friday and have to say the instructors are excellent. The changing rooms are clean and the staff are attentive. The small pool may need to be resurfaced at some point but overall a good place.

Great municipal pool
I love this pool. Clean accessible easy to use. The sauna is ace, but can be a bit crowded. Everything is normally quite clean and your possessions are secure.
