Four Free Exhibitions

The main event here is the revival of Radical Figures occupying the largest two ground floor and two first floor visions. But as a free alternative there are four other exhibitions across the gallery’s other spaces. On the ground floor Carlos Bunga’s strange warehouse world of ladders, upside down chairs, antique mirrors, pots and irons. A sort of sculptural version of MIchael Craig-Martin without the neon or the colour for that matter. In the theatre Rachel Pimms’s Plates combining landscapes from Northern Ireland and Zimbabwe. Upstairs a reprise of a selection of mainly Spanish painting and photography by one Veronica Berber Bicecci. Most impressive for me was the revival of an exhibition of paintings by artists featured in The Return of The Spirit in Painting at the RA in 1981. Only five artists represented but what stunning paintings, all masterpieces in their own right from the likes of Bruce McLean, Julian Schnabel, Mimmo Paladino and even a Georg Baselitz. Had there been an exhibition fee for all five exhibitions would have been worth the price for this group of paintings alone. Some useful archival material is available about the original exhibition.

About two term , Im bringing my daughter for an art project which is a really professional and good project for children . I always were happy by coffee shop but sadly my last experience in first Saturday of February 2020 wasn’t pleasant at all .
The manager of coffee shop treat us really bad ,I think he got upset as I said , I’m wonder if please kindly clean the table . !!!
He cleaned my table and not my friend’s table which was the one that we asked to be clean , he didn’t bring knife for our cakes and after requesting it took more than 15 minutes to bring one and put it on the dirty table when I went to ask the other one he gave it to me very rudely.
I told him that I want tea for two people and he told me the teapot is enough for two people but he brought only one cup and brought the second one after 15 minutes that tea got cold
So I had to tell him to please bring back them and I don’t want my money too .
I tried to find the manager and I found he is the manager so I decide to leave the place and before it I asked a gentleman in clock room that how I could write a letter about my experience, he told me each part actually is working separately and we could not write letter to the gallery and the best thing is to tell him we are not satisfied and want to leave the coffee shop satisfied.
I return and asked my friend to leave the coffee shop with me and on that time manager came and told me he want to give me refund and we could go and find another resturant !!!
I said my friend was my guest and it was very unpleasant experience how ever I’m glad that you refund my money .
After leaving the coffee shop we went and visit gallery and after leaving galley , my friend showed me an Italian resturant very close to gallery
We went there and I found it was more cheaper with a better quality with very polite staff .
From next Saturday I will go to that Italian resturant and really I feel I should say thank you to that manager as Now I find a very good resturant with much more option close to the galley .

Spent an afternoon in this quaint gallery. Seems to concentate on modern art and installations which might not be to everyone's taste. There are a lot of lifts in the building but all galleries are accessible by wheelchair. Would recommend, Staff helpful and friendly.

Eileen Agar Exhibition

This must be one of the most comprehensive retrospectives of the work of Eileen Agar a grande dame of English art whose life (1889-1991) was almost coterminous with that of the twentieth century itself. The space of no fewer than three galleries have been set aside for this exhibition, the largest in the ground floor featuring oils watercolours mainly pre-war as well as cabinets housing diaries, sketches and extracts from magazines and newspapers promoting or commenting on her exhibitions. Upstairs mainly post-war culminating in some large collages and late acrylics. But it was not the surrealist element of her work that I found so striking as the subtle yet bold colours and at times the sheer beauty of her creations such as the huge dove in whose head and neck one imagines anything from stripy wallpaper to a miniature recumbent female form. Entry to the Agar also affords entry to the free galleries including an exhibition next to the first floor library of English female surrealists (including sculptors) in general.

Gem of a Gallery

What a great Gallery space and exhibitions! I would definitely visit frequently if I lived locally (which unfortunately I don't) but as it's relatively small I would probaly only make a special trip if it had an exhibiton on that I was particularily keen to see. The works were well diplayed and the staff were very happy to talk about the exhibitions and share their expertise. I thoroughly enjoyed Whitechapel Gallery and would definitely recommend it - including the nice cafe and shop.

Great Art brilliantly displayed

The first time that I have been to the Whitechapel Gallery and I enjoyed my visit very much. Everyone was very helpful and the entire gallery is perfectly prepared for the current, quiet difficult situation (COVID-19). Not only is everything perfectly displayed but they also restrict the number of people per exhibition room. The explanation signs for the artefacts are perfectly placed and are short and easy to understand.
Also the on site Café/Restaurant (“Townsend”) is very pleasant and has very friendly service.

Whacky, challenging and fun.

Really lovely little gallery with some interesting and whacky stuff that free. Interesting installation from a Thai artist sponsored by Dior, a graffiti room Where anybody can leave a comment (very funny) and then a room dedicated to feminist art. Pretty diverse and not everybody’s cup of tea but it’s different and challenging so give it a try. Also near Brick Lane and loads of fantastic little restaurants nearby. My 17 year old daughter loved it.

Modern art:make of it what you can

My title says it all. There were some works there which I liked, some which I didn't and a few which I could not make head nor tail of. Still it passed an hour pleasantly and there is a wee cafe where you can get refreshments. Those who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like.

I came here by mistake looking for the other art exhibition (Whitechurch Passage), which I recommend.
WG has better signposting but worse art than Whitechurch Passage. To get to WCP, take a right on White Church Lane down to Sushinoen, then take a left.
Very confusing signage. Also, the art doesn't make sense.

Intimate art gallery, great meeting spot, original exhibitions

The gallery is adjacent to the Brick Lane side of Aldgate East Tube station. Shortish building which is larger inside than you might think. This is not the National Portrait Gallery nor is it the V&A. The exhibits here turn over regularly; often thought provoking but not hostile.

There is a book shop downstairs which has a lot of good art books and what I would call coffee table fodder for people who like books of interesting artsy things like around.

There is also a VERY good restaurant in the same building which I endorse and have reviewed elsewhere.

TIP - I think this is a good date place, easily go for a one hour look around the art gallery and then head into the restaurant for dinner. Being on the border of where East London meets the City at the end of Brick Lane, it is also a great location to push onto other places/sites in the area.

There is a great coffee shop upstairs which is regularly busy. I recommend this also as a good central meeting spot in London.
