- gamainInverell, Australia1,645 contributionsA visit to a pub on The Thames at WappingAs visitors to London we decided to make use of the fine warm weather. Deciding on lunch we caught the D3 bus from Bethnal Green to a stop about 70 m's (75 yds) from The Prospect of Whitby. It was quiet when we arrived after midday during our midweek visit. I immediately ordered our lunch whilst taking in the pubs heritage inside and out, whist waiting for lunch, with the couple alongside ordered something similar immediately before us. Their lunch arrived after about 15 minutes and yes we had time to take in the interior upstair and outside, whilst we waited for our lunch and enjoyed out wine and cider. After 30 minutes we quietly asked when lunch would arrive at our table, as the other couple had long finished their lunch. For the pub and heritage views of the pub I thought it was a 5/5, whilst lunch was a 3/5.Hello Gamain, we appreciate you taking the time to leave us this feedback.Written November 7, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 3, 2023
- Ken NChipping Norton, United Kingdom295 contributionsGreat venue but luke warm lunch!Tasty soup and chips but lukewarm! Called in on a Monday lunchtime the place was not very busy. Clearly our soup and chips had been sat on the pass for ten mins or so as it was all tepid. Great atmosphere. Good beer. Shame. Was asked “how’s everything?” Replied “not great - everything’s a bit cold!” Shrug of shoulders! We appreciate all reviews, and appreciate you giving us the chance to improve by providing us with this feedback. The team should all be trained in how to deal with and rectifying these situations so if you don't mind would you let me know a bit more detail so I can investigate where necessary. - Shu X7 contributionsNice old traditional English pub by the ThamesVery nice old pub to visit after a nice walk around the calm and not busy area that is Wapping. Great views of the Thames and good variety of food and drink on the menu. Unfortunately on of the 11 dishes came out cold, but we were offered a free drink/dessert instead, which was very nice. The other dishes were great. Will definitely visit again! Thanks for taking the time to let us know how we did, we are glad you enjoyed your visit and the views. - Ollie PDaventry, United Kingdom32 contributionsCool little resterauntNice unique little pub, told the guy on the bar we had a reservation he told us to wait a few minutes for our table and then walked off and served someone else while we were about to order drinks which we felt was a bit rude. All the other staff were incredibly helpful and friendly My partner said his stake and ale pie was lovely, my chips came out cold but was offered to have them remade and our waitress took them off the bill. Not the end of the world and was understandable as the kitchen was incredibly busy. The smoking area outside has a great viewHi Oliver P, I remember serving you that evening it’s great to hear you enjoyed your visit to our pub. - Stephen ChicagoChicago, Illinois96 contributionsPerfect place to spend my birthday atWe came here on New Year’s Eve for a drink and ended up staying all afternoon and then moved to the gorgeous dining room for dinner. What an amazing view of the Thames from the dining room. And the view was from every table . Such a relaxing atmosphere. It’s THE perfect way to wile away a day. Very friendly service. A very large and varied drinks selection. Food was delicious. And the location is perfect. Wapping feels like a step back in time and it’s easy to feel like you’re a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of central London. But you’re only a short trip on the train or bus away. We made a reservation for drinks only. We didn’t need to, even on a Sunday which was NYE, there were plenty of available tables. But I am glad that we did as it meant we had a reserved table upstairs.Stephechitown, we're glad you had such a wonderful experience with us, and have shared it for us. - Michelle bLondon, United Kingdom72 contributionsGreat location, not great food!A great looking pub in a fantastic position, right on the river with lots of history. Food was very average. Chicken Kiev had virtually no garlic butter. Macaroni cheese was stodgy. Pie had a quarter of undercooked cabbage with it. Burger was good. It was very busy but they got our order completely wrong so we ate at completely different times to each other. The views over the River Thames were outstanding, the food was traditional British grub , but really well presented and tasted delicious, and was reasonably priced . - Loes25 contributionsAmazing place with a great viewI visited the prospect of Whitby during the citytrip with my son. If you want to experience how it feels to eat in a pub, the prospect of Whitby is the place to go. Its interior is wonderful and the view over the Thames spectacular. The food was very good and the staff very friendly. Unfortunately my son left his jacket behind. But they were so kind to send it to us in the mail. Our visit to the Prospect of Whitby was really great. Also the walk from London city centre Tower bridge to the Prospect of Whitby is only a short distance and a wonderful walk!Thank you so much for your positive comments about our pub, we're glad that you got your coat back ok. Special thanks to Stefano who helped us get everything set up and coordinated our food pre-order seamlessly. We love this pub for its historic ambience year round and the terrace is lovely for spring/summer. 10/10 would recommend!Such a nice review to read, thank you so much. The last 3 times we have visited this pub we have left frustrated and disappointed. It is a fabulous pub full of history but it is let down by the staff and the service. I haven't bothered to write a review before but this time I thought I should. The service in the pub is terrible, inexperienced staff that don't know how to make a coffee, that don't take your order properly and that clearly don't know customer service. We asked for 3 cappuccinos and ended up with half cups of cappuccinos that were luke warm. We couldn't be bothered to wait to complain as there was a queue at the bar and it was taking forever for other people to be served. Would love to visit this pub again but I can't put myself through another frustrating situation.

been there many time over many years but last night was a huge disappointment.
I had booked earlier in the week so i didn't expect to be treated less favourably than people walking in off the street. I turned up on time and was made to wait as my table was not ready. when we did get our table it was by the constantly opening front door.
so i could hear the conversations between the staff and new customer's coming in. so people kept coming in without a reservation and being immediately seated somewhere better than my table. I complained and got a move to a slightly better table. but then they didn't have either of the meals that we picked so had to do wit a second choice.

While walking the Thames Path, we stopped here for lunch as according to my rather dated Thames Path guide it is a 'tourist mecca'. Well if it was when the guide was written, it certainly is not now. The location clearly has not changed and we had a good seat with a pleasant view of the river. I would also add that it has a good selection of beers and so may be worth a visit if one just wants a drink, although service is slow. However, do not expect either the food or the service to be any good. We arrived at around 12 noon and were advised that a meal would take 30 to 35 minutes when in fact it took nearer to an hour. The food was not worth the wait either. Worst though was the attitude of the staff who made up whatever excuses they could think of for the delays and were rude arrogant. They, for example blamed it on the pub being crowded when it was not, especially when we arrived and ordered and the pub was largely empty. I suspect an order got lost but they would not admit it.

Hi Tim,
I'm sorry that you were disappointed with your visit on this occasion, we do strive to always deliver an excellent level of customer service. I'm sorry that you had to wait for your food, we do try to let our guests know when there will be a wait on food, especially as the pub has so many different rooms it is not always obvious at the bar when the pub is busy. Hopefully you will visit us again soon when you will able to see what great food and service we can do.

The evening starting with a cold welcome from lady behind bar, as if we had dared visit their establishment at 1900 on a Sunday night but this did not really matter as we were there for a good time.
Came to order food and they had none of the options we had chosen so we quickly decided on something else. Went back to our table to double check we had got it right with the rest of the party whilst leaving my partner to pay, alas there was an error so quickly returned to bar as the receipt was behind handed over. Requested to change the order, beef burger for chicken and the manager went to the kitchen to check. She replied saying no, 'the kitchen have already put it on.'
This was obviously a lie. We had ordered a large amount of starters with burgers for mains so if anything had been"put on" it would have been the starters not the mains. If the mains had already been put on then they would have been sitting under the lamps for possibly 45 minutes, disgusting. Regardless of this a beef burger patty is a cheap item, majority of restaurants with a shred of customer respect would have changed the order.
Went to complain and brought up the point that the burgers if "put on" at the same time as starters would be sitting around for 45 minutes. The waiter responded that the kitchen was closing soon and they would cook everything at the same time. It was 1930. Website says the kitchen it open till 2100.
We then replied that either the burger was changed or we would cancel the whole order and the kitchen confirmed they would cancel the order rather than change the burger.
So in conclusion, the kitchen refused to change the order initially because the burger had been 'put on'. One would expect this was because they did not want to waste the food. BUT, they would happily cancel the whole order throwing away four half cooked and four half cooked mains.
This place hides behind its historic status. We drove 90 minutes to visit this place and was met by rude staff, lying managers and a kitchen who could not be bothered to serve us food at a reasonable time.

I'm very sorry to hear of this experience that you had with us Jeremy. You weren't lied to by the manager though as this is the first I have heard of this incident, be assured though that I will be looking into what happened here as we do indeed serve food until 9pm. Please could you email me on 7234@greeneking.co.uk and I will get to the bottom of it and and hopefully be able to resolve it for you.

Christmas Day lunch was absolutely appalling .
First of all we ordered a bottle of Prosecco which was plonked in the middle of the table and left for us to open. I suspect this is against health and safety .
Main course was served and we asked repeatedly for the gravy to be served with it . 25 minutes later it was and by then the food was stone cold and hardly eaten.
Desert was served the same time as the cheese platter , both together with no cutlery at all to eat any of it . Asked the waitress twice for cutlery but none was given. We had to take some off another table. Other people looked on in disbelief at the service we were getting and offers were complaining too .
The waitress was rude and abrupt and told us the at we should expect this kind of service as we had chosen to eat out on Christmas Day!!
We ordered further drinks and were told they didn’t have theses drinks in stock 15 minutes later. My son then went to the bar to enquire what they had and he was told to “look”.
This was so upsetting as we have been regulars at this pub for many years. It totally spoilt our Christmas !

Hi Angela, I am truly sorry to hear that we spoilt your Christmas, all of our team really did try our best for you, from making changes to your booking a couple of times in the days leading up to Christmas Day, to making peppercorn sauce that you had requested even though it wasn't on the Christmas Day menu.
As I'm sure you are aware, it has been an extremely unpredictable time for the hospitality industry, and even up to a few days before, with 7 team members, including our head chef, off due to Covid we weren't sure we were even going to be able to open. We managed to find covering team members from other pubs to come and work here for the day so that we didn't have to cancel any bookings, so I'm sorry that they weren't totally familiar with the pub and our systems or where to find things, they really did step up though and work very hard and I am grateful for each and everyone of them that came into work that day.
Again in the kitchen with the head chef off, 2 part-time chefs stepped up and ran the kitchen for the day and on the whole did a fantastic job, getting out 4 courses to all our bookings, including the extra ones we picked up last minute due to other pubs having to close.
Supply is still an ongoing issue for us and the industry as a whole, so I apologise also if we didn't have the choice of drinks that you wanted that day. I'm also sorry that the Prosecco wasn't opened for you, some guests prefer to open it themselves (it is not against health & safety), but if you had asked it should have been done for you.
All the tables were laid out with all the cutlery at the start of the shift, I checked them myself, so I'm not sure what happened to yours, maybe someone else took it off the table? Apologies.
We did listen to your feedback on the day itself, and comped your full 4 course meal off the bill, as a gesture of goodwill, and thought we had made recompense for spoiling your Christmas, so I'm sorry and disappointed to hear that wasn't the case and you still left unhappy, we really do want to all our guests to always leave happy, so to hear that someone thought we were appalling is very upsetting to hear for both myself and my team. Thank you for your comments about the other tables, we didn't receive any other complaints on the day though, and to my knowledge everyone else left happy.

A well known and highly regarded pub on the banks of The Thames, it looks quite traditional from the outside with a brick façade and black wood panelling with curved white windows facing on to the street. It’s worth taking a walk down the passageway at the side of the pub, where you cannot only see the rear elevation, but the banks of the river and a hangman’s noose as a reminder of the executions that used to be carried out nearby.
The menu offered a selection of “pub grub” dishes such as Hunter’s Chicken, Sausage & Mash, Lasagne and so on, and these were mostly priced in the £10 - £15 range. My Gammon, Egg & Chips was a decent enough dish, being a generous portion and a tasty piece of meat. If I were being critical I would say that the gammon could have been a bit tenderer and the egg yoks a bit runnier, but that’s really being a bit picky it was an enjoyable meal. It was nice to get a proper bottle of tomato sauce as well, rather than those infuriating little sachets or a small tub with something indeterminate in it, as happens in so many pubs. Across the table, the fish and chips with tartare sauce was also well received. All in all, a lovely old pub and well worth checking out.

This is a busy pub. And rightly so, it's beautifully positioned on the bank of the Thames and has a fabulous history. But it's really brought to life by its staff who, on the night we went for dinner, explained that the kitchen was 'a bit overwhelmed' and that food might take a while. That was fine with us - Julia and Rebecca kept us happy with drinks and when the food did come, after not too long a wait, it was good, old fashioned pub grub/comfort food and very much what we'd come in for.

This famously historic pub has been on our wish list for quite some time. The pub oozes character from the unique pewter bar top to the replica gallows over the Thames. To celebrate finally reaching this port of call we had a tot of rum with our pint of ale.

Booked a table for my partner's birthday celebration. Overall, had a nice, albeit rainy, afternoon at the Prospect of Whitby. However, this was spoiled at the end by a rude member of staff who suddenly approached our table and told us we had to leave in 5 minutes because the table had been booked. This was clearly untrue as when we had arrived, another member of staff told us the table wasn't booked until 7pm. I let the staff member know this and he sighed at me and then told us we had been there for 3 hours and we were only allowed to have it for 2 (again, this hadn't been communicated to me at any point during the booking or when we had arrived at the pub). Nevertheless, we agreed to leave soon (we had just ordered more food and were still finishing this off). The staff member then stood over us with his hand on his hip and kept looking at his watch. Really disappointing end to a nice afternoon.

I have never been so disappointed when visiting a pub. The female host (which I later found out was the manager) was foul!!! She seemed to upset everyone else, as she barked at some other guests in front of the whole garden. Which then turned into ALL of us sharing our experience with her. One lady said she nearly made her cry. The only reason we all stayed was because of a team member going around and respectfully apologising on her behalf. He was still desperately trying to have her back. We found out his name is Kenny! What a legend. #promotionforkenny

Samantha, I'm sorry that you had a disappointing visit with us. I'd just like to first point out that it was not the manager who was hosting that day as I have been in self-isolation for the last 10 days. I would appreciate it if you could email me with some more detail about your visit, when it was and what happened so I can look into this further. Our email is 7234@greeneking.co.uk Thank you

I am sorry but I do not know if dogs are Welcome at the Prospect.
However, on the same topic I read an interesting article in CAMRA's magazine about pubs that cater especially for dogs and their owners. Amazing the facilities and snacks and drinks that are provided for the four-legged customers!
Good luck, Jim
