Top ways to experience The George and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighborhood: Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighborhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.

Old world charm…a beer lovers dream bar
Our cab driver recommended and made reservations for us…located right near Bourough Market, so shop till you drop and then head across the street. This is at least 150 year old building with 3 levels, it creaks, it groans but it’s solid! Cool terraces to sit and gaze at the courtyard. Food was quite good, we had Sunday roast and it was plenty to eat…. At least 30 beers at the 4 different bars that you can get drinks… we had an awesome waitress named Ellen… her laugh was infectious and her attention to detail was the best! Give this place a try…. And try and get Ellen!

The George's great staff make Londoners and Tourists alike welcome
The George is a hidden gem for locals and tourists. The central location is amazing, as is the National Trust building. But the really special quality at The George is the staff. They went out of their way to help me organise a memorable meal for my husband's birthday. A day we will all remember... and I think my friends, like my husband and I, will be sure to come back. And that is rare in central London.

    A wonderful Sunday lunch!
What a wonderful pub! We enjoyed an early Sunday lunch in the gallery restaurant, which has so much history but has escaoed being turned into a museum. We were welcomed by Hollie, who was friendly, cheerful and very helpful throughout. My own Sunday roast - sirloin with all the trimmings - was delicious. Billowing yorkshire pudding, cauli in a light cheese sauce and the best grilled cabbage I have ever tasted! Vinny, the chef, came briefly to our table so we could ask for a few tips. The whole atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and I will be recommending it to my friends.

Beautiful building, staff let it down
The building is 5 out of 5, absolutely beautiful and well worth a visit. Drinks were reasonably priced. Unfortunately the staff let the side down, no hello or chat whatsoever, surly and rude. Considering its an historic hot spot you would think that the staff would be happy to engage, as everyone else was there for the same thing, to take pictures and soak up the ambience. Management, take note!!

There are several moments in my life that I look back on with great fondness. The birth of my first son. My daughters wedding day. When oasis reformed briefly in 2008. But another moment that shall stay for me for just as long is when jobsworth of the year 2020 decided to singlehandedly ruin my 30 year anniversary with my schoolmates that I hadn’t seen in so long. For the sake of this argument we shall call her JW. JW must have had a philandering father who was a mod back in the day because the disdain when Rod Stewart came over the medium wave was palpable in the air. Baby Jane had broken her curfew. The boys were not back in town tonight. They say the George was built in 1388 - aproximately a century after JWs last recorded smile. When asked why she had such a sunny disposition we were pleasantly addressed by Zaccheus masquerading as a game of thrones extra telling us that we might break the Sputnik. Could do with a lick of paint. 0.5 stars

Had a great visit to The George for Sunday Dinner.
The Roast lamb was delicious and so glad they do cauliflower cheese!! Everything was perfect!
The fish and chips again excellent!
A special mention to Killian who served us who was so attentive, friendly and made us feel very welcome and looked after.
Ellie was also fantastic, serving us drinks at our table. Thanks!!
Dolly our dog was spoilt with treats at the door and served water as it was such a hot day and thank you for that.
I would certainly recommend The George for a perfect Sunday out.

Lovely old pub but advise to book ahead.

We went for lunch, we had:

macaroni cheese x 2
Burger and chips
Roast chicken
Roast beef
Roast lamb

All the food appeared to have been cooked earlier and then reheated. Really poor quality, very dry and the meat really tough.

If you’re visiting, just be warned, the food is quite shocking especially at a price of £60+

We came here whilst waiting to eat at Padella and managed to bag ourselves a seat.

The pub has been organised to maximise on social distancing, where you can use the app in order to get drinks. Ordering has never been easier with drinks taking about 3 minutes to arrive. There’s a one way system in order to minimise contact with others.

The ambience was really nice, and it felt slightly like the old normal.

Visited on Sunday afternoon, greeted by two lovely friendly staff members. Showed us to our table, we hadn’t pre-booked but they found us a table outside - perfect. Table totally cleaned before we sat down. Young lady explained how to order, all very clear and easy. Ordered foo, big fish and chips to share, young man who brought us our food very friendly, checked we had everything we needed, checked again later. Lovely relaxed Sunday afternoon in a great pub. Not over priced for a London pub. Would definitely recommend and visit again when we next come to London.

Honestly it is a must see pub for the atmosphere and the building. It is a cool place for both sunny (courtyard)or rainy days (plenty of rooms). We had pies and they were not great but I do not judge a pub food on a busy time of Friday night. Staff both bars and restaurant was nice and quick service.

My friend pre-booked a table and when we arrived we were met buy a friendly lady who asked us to sanitise our hands, gave us a menu and the barcode to scan, as she showed us to our table. There was a 1 way system into the bar and once orders and payed for, the drinks were brought to our table. I’ve always liked the choice of beers and drinks here. I felt that they had taken every precaution possible to keep their Customers as safe as possible. We will definitely continue to use this pub regularly.

We came on a Sunday afternoon, and admittedly did not book, but I’d rather that they had turned us away.
Lily- the greeter- initially seemed pleasant but although there were a few empty tables we were instantly asked if we (as a two) would be happy to share a four seater table with others, although we felt awkward declining we did say we would rather not (at a time of social distancing seemed bizarre) which seemed to piss her off- and she said if she needed the space we would have to essentially deal with it. We were then singled out immediately after we sat down to have someone forced into the same table as us, not only that but told we would be sharing an ashtray....
We saw many many other groups forced to share tables, I get you want to cram us in but it’s irresponsible and unsafe.

We visited the pub in April 30. and we had booked a table in advance.
There were NO guests in the pub when we arrived at 12am. The female waiter told us that we couldn’t have our table because they had a meeting in the dining room. We chose another table in the bar room, and the waiter advised us that she could only hold the booked table for us in 15. Minutes?? Mind you, we could still not get into the room? In the top of that we had our dinner served in the pub, and my sandwich, which should be rare beef, was well done and full of a lot of fat and tendons, which the waiter explained like this: all rare Meat is like that?
A very disappointing experience, mostly due to the very rude waitres.

I LOVED this pub. It was one of Charles Dickens favorite pubs. They keep a chair by the fireplace in the Parliament room in honor of him as it was his favorite spot. There are no signs that explain it- you just have to know (or the staff tells you, which was how I found out). It has great food and is not expensive. It was my favorite place to eat on our recent London trip.
