Address
Neighborhood: Mayfair
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.

Lovely olde worlde book shop in the centre of London
Jul 2021
I love book shops and try to visit one whenever I am out and about in a city. Having read about this one in Lonely Planet some time ago we made a detour on our journey back to our hotel to pay a visit.
On entry you are immediately enveloped into this book emporium established back in 1797. Everything is clearly marked so it is fairly easy to find your way around.
In addition to those on display which include signed copies of recent releases any book in print can be ordered and fine copies or out-of-print books sourced by a dedicated team.

I approached a member of staff, Ned, regarding a first edition. He was very helpful and friendly and hopefully they will be able to locate what I'm looking for having taken my details

Just a lovely experience

I was in London. While having a coffee I had an irresistible impulse to relive the experience of my student days and buy a book from a bricks and mortar bookshop. I checked availability online and reserved it.

Moral me, I thought! Altruistically abandoning Amazon for a put upon posh shop on a posh London street. I walked past the grocer on the corner, Fortnum & Mason. Patting myself on the back all the way there I was slammed in the face by shoddy sneering staff with sticks up their backside.

At least with Amazon they might send you a used product instead of a new one (a steam iron arriving with water in it) or a questionable Chinese counterfeit, but at least you are left with the impression they were delighted to provide you with a service.

Here at Hatchards, it was a palaver to pick up your reserved item, a failed credit card transaction was met with the implication there was a problem with impecuniosity, and the 10p bag charge didn't extend to a robust rope handled creation to impress your fellow commuters with your impeccable pedigree indicated by your choice of bookshop. No, what I got - on account of possibly my sweaty countenance, colour, ethnicity, class or accent - was a feeble paper bag barely larger than the book and too delicate to carry a bookmark.

I'll continue to avoid Amazon where possible, but when I do buy from them it will with a sense of satisfaction that the out-of-touch and out-of-order patrician values and practices are being filtered off our streets.

What a Wonderful Bookstore

What a Wonderful Bookstore

In November, we were in London on business, and a good friend took my wife shopping, for a present for a board member’s son. We stopped into Hatchards - Piccadilly, at 187 Piccadilly, St James, for the very first time. Though I had walked this section of Piccadilly maybe a hundred times, I had never noticed Hatchards, but will from now on.

The store is lovely, but with its Holiday decorations, even more so now. The interior architecture is not to be missed - and oh, by the way, they have a wonderful, and amazing selections of books! In short order, the ladies had found perfect gifts, and were quickly checked out. Though the Holiday shopping crowd was in evidence, the purchasing process was very efficient. The only thing that took time, was finding those proper gifts, as Hatchards is much larger, than it appears from the street.

Take the time to take in the lovely spiral staircase, between floors, just for its beauty.

Still a charming Bookstore
Nov 2019
Another bookstore that oozes character.
The staff are so polite & knowledgeable. Tough jog having to put with so many weird people.
Probably my most frequented bookshop when I am in London.

I could spend hours here
Dec 2019
If you like reading and browsing, this place is for you. I could spend hours browsing through the many floors of books, sitting in one of the comfy chairs and finding way too many books to take home with me. Great staff suggestions and really a huge selection.

Irritatingly posh but well stocked bookshop
Dec 2019 • Solo
I made a gift-buying visit to this store and it’s impressive in it’s old world charm, creaking staircases and well stocked collection of art books. But there’s distinct whiff of Chelsea about the place, dishevelled public school boys with floppy hair probably called Cosmo blathering on about nothing at the till. Gap year gals with enough vocal fry to cook a quail’s egg. The tweedy man in front of me at the till looked like he’d not relaxed his right eyebrow in 40 years. The whole store smells like Penhaligon’s Musk Rat Cologne. Kept expecting to run into Brian Sewell on the stairway. I’m chippy enough to serve with mushy peas so I won’t be going back there in a hurry.

Great place for book lovers to loose themselves
Nov 2019
Had to come and see this famous bookstore when visiting London. So much a part of history and if you are a book lover, a must see! Floors upon floors of both contemporary & older works. The number of signed copies available for purchase is outstanding! The shelves are packed with wonderful finds across all types of topics, spent over an hour just browsing to pick a section to start doing deeper title browsing.

The shop is also dressed up and festive for the season. Take the time to come in and browse, select some interesting titles and go next door to Fortum & Mason for some tea while you read. What a great afteronoon!

What a Bookstore should be!
Jul 2019
You will find so many places to lose yourself in at Hatchards, so many nooks and places to grab a book and peruse.
The staff are amazing. The selection of books will blow you away. This is what a bookstore should be. Not online.
You can't go to Picadilly and not stop here!
