The area
Neighborhood: Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.

Amazing history

Went to museums and walked along the river at Richmond. Also walked through old areas of Ealing and Acton. Lovely cafes and restaurants in this area.

overhyped

My wife and I were very disappointed as we thought the production amateurish and overall a great disappointment.

That is the trouble with Sondheim - he is lime Marmite - lopve him or hate him!

Enjoyable production
Jul 2013 • Couples
Booked these tickets on 'the cheap' (love a bargain) and wasn't disappointed. Great seats and a beautiful theatre. We enjoyed the show although its a numb-bum situation towards the end - started getting a bit wriggly and anticipating the end. It was well acted and executed throughout. Its a shame its closing as I'm sure more people would enjoy this too.

Superb production - a tribute to Sondheim
Jul 2013 • Couples
On the hottest night of the year this production captivated me with it's music, singing and storyline. I loved the way it moved back in time and explored the dynamics between the three old friends who were all superbly portrayed. Sondheim's music can be hard to get across but this production achieved it and the orchestra were spot on. I also admired the set which transcended the decades. The fact that for much of the time the cast were wearing coats under lights and in a warm theatre is a tribute to their professionalism, dedication and talent. Bravo!

Loved this, it's not long to run so well worth a visit. Sondheim musical at a lovely theatre (sadly, no air conditioning) that kept us all enthralled

Great show, great production
Jul 2013 • Friends
I absolutely loved this show. It deserves to play to full houses for the rest of its run. The three leads are outstanding particularly Jenna Russell. The company singing is so strong and so tight when singing the typically difficult Sondheim score. The Harold Pinter theatre is a beautiful theatre too. Go and see this show while it is still on. it's an absolute gem with beautiful songs, a great book and wonderful performances.

Wonderful Theater Experience
May 2013 • Couples
What a great experience...we did not want to see a show that we could easily see on Broadway or "on the road"...so we chose "Merrily we roll along" A Sondheim show that Bombed in New York many years ago ( it only lasted 16 performances) In London-it has been restaged and reworked and the Sondheim music shines. Great evening!

Best musical for a long while
Jul 2013 • Couples
I had seen the show before it closed at the Chocolate Factory, and whilst I thought it was a 5 star show back then, somehow it is even better now!!
The team have tweaked the tiny things that didn't work, and crafted the best musical I have seen in London for a VERY long time.

It is difficult to pinpoint what stands out as it is uniformly excellent. Of course, if you like Sondheim, you will love this. The man himself has visited, given advice and apparently loves the production.

The cast are stunning, from the always strong and vocally skilled Mark Umbers as Frank, to Jenna Russell's wonderful turn as Mary, through to stand out Damian Humbley as Charlie, whose 'Franklin Shepherd Inc' is one of the highlights of this production. The rest of the cast are absolutely wonderful, from Josefina Gabrielle's hideous Gussie, to Care Foster's heartbreaking Beth, and beyond, they are clearly all loving the experience this show is giving them, and boy does it show!
Maria Friedman is not one of my favourite performers, but 'Merrily' has left me craving more work from her as a director. Everything in the show is pitch perfect, the staging, the characterisations, when to have us laugh, when to have us cry. Every moment is judged superbly.
The set, lighting, band and sound are also all sublime, and it's this level of details that makes 'Merrily' the pinnacle of West End productions, that it currently is...more 5 star reviews than any West End show ever...and I can see why!

Unmemorable first half
Jul 2013
For all its race reviews, the long first half is monotonously bland and unmemorable, devoid of any catchy tunes and with a story line which left me not really caring what happened. The second half at least contained some catchier material and scene/costume changes that made it more varied.
