Go for the Choral Music!
Dec 2019
Rebuilt after the Great Fire, this Wren Church is in itself interesting to see. I came to see the Executioners bell of St Sepulchre which is a 350 year old artefact. It was to remind the condemned of their ways before their demise at Newgate Prison, that was nearby. However I stumbled upon a choral mid-day service, which I have never experienced before. It was so calming and atmospheric, in the middle of bustling London. Visit on Tuesdays to take it all in. Very good.

Regrettably it was closed when I tried to visit on a Friday lunchtime. Opposite the old Bailey. Did see some interesting plaque relating to the Gurkhas.

Nice for quick visit

A beautiful church, there was no one there when I visited so had the place to myself. It is bigger than it looks from the outside, and some interesting flags. A wall plaque of list of vicars goes back to 1137, that is worth seeing.

Massive church opposite the Old Bailey
Apr 2019 • Solo
This church is associated with the Royal Fusiliers City of London Regiment and has a garden of remembrance dedicated to it. It has Saxon origins, but was completely rebuilt in the 15th century and underwent substantial refurbishment in 1878. Its bells are referred to in the nursery rhyme Oranges and Lemons as ‘the bells of Old Bailey’. The interior has substantial columns marking out the side aisles and a superbly decorated ceiling. The organ is a dominant feature, with gold painted pipes on two sides.

Lovely church

Amazing what you found when you walk around the city rather than take the tube. This lovely church contains the ashes of Sir Henry Wood within the musicians chapel. Great selection of naval flags, stained glass windows and the impressive executioners bell

Good church with some great stuff in it

Well worth a visit. Check out the association with Capt. John Smith and Pocahontas, but most of all the original and bell and poem used on the last night of a doomed prisoner from nearby Newgate Gaol. Spooky!

A very grand church
Sep 2018
This is a surprisingly large church that contains the ashes of Sir Henry Wood (Prom concerts) within a musicians chapel. There is also a Regimental Chapel for the Royal Fusiliers as well as some lovely stained glass and an impressive organ.

Lovely Church with Interesting Historical Tidbits
Jul 2017 • Couples
We stopped into St. Sepulcher Without Newgate Church on our site-seeing walk through the area, and while listening to the choir practice for a concert later that night, we explored the interior of the church. There are a couple of interesting historical artifacts in the church, our favorite being the Executioner's Bell, displayed in a glass case affixed to a column near the right side row of pews.

There is a also a fine selection of historical naval flags flanking the nave, and a selection of interred residents, the most famous being Captain John Smith of Jamestown fame.

Choral Evensong (Tuesdays 18.30) a MUST
Dec 2016 • Solo
Forget the architecture, forget the religion (I myself am an atheist), Go for the music. As it should for a Church with a particular dedication to musicians. Sir Henry Wood is buried here apparently.

A world-class choir provides effectively a free concert every Tuesday night. Seriously, these are professional or student singers and the acoustics are exploited fully for astonishing, tingling sounds. If you love madrigals, motets and "Spem in Alium" or the "Stabat Mater" makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, this is the place for you. There are hymns for the laity to join in as well.

Great for that awkward pause between museum visiting, sight-seeing and dinner if you are a tourist, or a spot of spiritual renewal if you are a jaded banker in the Square Mile, in which St Sepulchre's sits proudly. Choral Evensong (s) are accompanied by a printed order of service which give you the words to all songs and responses if you are of a religious persuasion and make a nice souvenir if you are visiting. And you get to see all the architecture at the same time!

I was lucky enough to live around here once and the Christmas carol concert was fabulous, and I met some friendly American post-grads miles from home. And some homeless people. All are truly welcomed by the personable incumbent. They regularly host other musical events too, so if you are visiting this area, check their listings: www.StSepulchres/concerts

It's not all commerce in the City, but the Vicar and Parish hold up the banner for Culture and - pardon my French - damn well too!

Beautiful church with a must see bell inside
Oct 2017 • Family
Very welcoming as you go in and takes your breath away as the church is truly beautiful. This is one of the churches that is mentioned in the nursery rhyme Oranges and Lemons. The area between the Old Bailey (used to be Newgate prison) and the church was where they used to hang people as it was moved from Tyburn in 1783. The hand bell inside the church was rung before an execution and you can see it in a case when you go inside of the church.
